Surely there is no way an insurance company could detect an uprated chip, or could they ?

Why not go the whole hog. There's no way a copper can detect an uninsured driver - unless he stops him. (Yes, yes, smart*rses, I know some cars are on the national database now so that they can, but you get my point). Seriously though, if you don't pay the extra £20 or so, and you have a shitcart, you could potentially render your insurance invalid, so either do it all or not at all. Finally bear in mind that more than one insurer reads this forum. You have your name, your town, and your car type posted here. Wouldn't take them TOO long to find you and make a note to carry our extra checks next time you claim, methinks....

When my car developed a fault, and it went back to Fiat, they detected that it was chipped by receiving error messages when they plugged the car into the diagnostics machines.
I think it's fairly obvious on a 20VT if it's been chipped or not, as there will be marks on the ECU where it's been opened up. All an assessor/loss adjuster has to do is send to ECU to Fiat, and ask them to check it.
Sideways a LOT

What happens if you don't know that the cars been chipped?
Are you expected to remove the ECU to check when you go to buy a car.

My current insurance runs out next month. Looking forward to having a years no claims behind me so I can go Noel Dazely. I got a quote from them a few months back, I'm sure it was around £600 or so. Anyone care to stab a guess at what that would rise to after adding chip, strut brace and EBC ?

As above. I gathered they weren't bothered with a k&n induction(which I removed anyway), strut brace or uprated breaks. They didn't bother asking for recepit details either as I think some companies do as they want reassurance that the chip etc has been done properly. Haven't a clue about an EBC - what is it anyway
