I have a feeling that a 'proper' rear diffusor is actually
part of the underbody aero of the car.

can anybody who has looked under a , for eg , Elise 111s/
Exige , comment ?

Per what is it about the handling of your car that you don't like?

Is it straight line stability? or oversteer in high speed corners.

Remember aero aids will only work at higher speeds, and I find that up to about 80 mph, the Coupes inherent trait is still understeer.
Beyond this the Coupe is far more neutral (well with uprated ARB's front and back) beyond 80 mph, but even at high speed I don't get the feeling that the back needs any more grip?

Joe

Very good views Joe.
I have no trouble at all with the handling really. My view is you can't get to much grip...

I've done a lot already, -1,5deg camber, battery in boot, Eibach's etc. etc. In all I'm impressed with the handling as it is.
Only other things to come are rear ARB (novitec), Bilsteins (already ordered) and Toyo R888 (lying at home!)

(Actually, this is ca 80% fun creativity for me, tinkering about on a rainy afternoon )

Sorry bout so few/bad pics. I'll do some final touches and post some more next week!

I've been under Speedster's and Elise's a few times (there are some here at Volvo Design parking..) and mostly they've been aftermarket products. Aluminium, long and bolted to the underpan, seem to work fine for Speedster's. Although they tend to slide off the road anyway every now and then..

Per, I think that is more due to the driver not the car

Here is one diffusor for the Speedster clicky

Hmm, so what you're saying is Speedster drivers are the worst drivers?

..to compare with the std. Plus next to me.

Jim; I see what you mean about the rest of the floor not being totally flush/flat.

Having said that, I was under a bling new BMW 530 yesterday and boy - that room for the rearaxle is huge!! Lot bigger than ours. After that it was smooth and even but..
Then again you never REALLY know with aerodynamic's until you try in a tunnel...

Thanx mate!
That's a custom built stainless 2.5" with double big mufflers (free-flow), built by A-Alt Avgas here in Gothenburg.
Did think of Miltek - but it wasn't to be..

Does anyone else read 'Practical Performance Car' they are doing an article on aerodynamics at the moment, basically they said, manufacturers spend millions on developing cars in wind tunnels, all these bolt on body kits, wings, spoilers, etc just ruin the car, make it slower and spoil the handling.

Stick with the factory kits, they are designed to work on the car.

Yes, I read that, interesting stuff.

BTW Did you see the article in the Top Gear section of the magazine? We got our camera mounts mentioned.

Good bit of pionerring work Per, it's going to be difficult to tell if it will help though? Are you able to remove it at trackside to do with and without comparisons?

Hello Dave! There is some glue involved at one spot, otherwise it wouldn't be too difficult.
I did a trackday this weekend, though the i'm afraid the performance of my newly overhauled engine and the new Toyo-tires somehow stole the show! I.e. it's possible it does give me 1 or 2kg's at high speed but I can't really say.
But hey it looks cool! So it may intimidate competitors..
I'll try to get the aero-engineer out on the parking this week to get his word on it.

Had a nice chat Magnus (the aerodynamic engineer here at Volvo Design) last week.
He'd never been under a Coupe before and was impressed how well aero-developed it was, compared to other std.cars. Especially at the front/end with it's undertrays.
He figured the Coupe essentially already has half a diffusor as it is!
He also pinpointed the most obvious obsticle for a nice flow, the rear valance at the end of the bumper, ca 1.5cm. It's there (as on most cars) to rigid the bumber and to hide screws etc. from sight. However, it's possible to cut the mid bit off as I did without much worry, and instead gaining big in flow release.

Basically, Magnus told me it's impossible to calculate the amount of downforce I got at which speed, without the aid of a windtunnel..
The point for me is that it works, which he told me it most certainly would do!

There a 2 main profits for me here, compared to a boot-wing/spoiler:
1. It produces downforce without adding any drag.
2. It doesn't spoil the looks (as much anyway!).
