Hey thought I'd say hello, just joined the forum and had a little look around, lots of info about on here which is good as I've been given my uncles 16V Turbo which has been sat for 8 years and in need of some love and attention to get back on the road, maybe not the smartest idea to take on such a project car at 18 yr old but I just love the shape and sounds that coupes makes and thought it would be good to at least try to save the car, I've been told the engine runs fine and has been running in the not so distant past, currently in the process of checking for rust, took out the old seats and threw them away as i got some 20v LE Recaros from a donor coupe to go in, then gotta get it rolling so we can move it out of the way of the garage and get my uncles Sedicivalvole out of the garage and get my coupe in it then the real work can start. I've attached some photos of her, just a few quick questions for now, the spoiler on it, I'm guessing that's not standard and was added when a previous owner replaced all the fiat badges with Abarth badges and any particular areas i should be checking for rust, i know to look at Sills, arches (which look quite clean on this one) the Eiffel Towers, floor pan, and inner rear sills, which are looking a bit orange when i checked them, i read that water gets through the pininfarina badges and causes that. anywhere else i should pay good attention too?

Welcome along!

There aren't that many 16VT left so possibly worth hanging onto bits you upgrade as you might not be able replace them later if you choose. That said it looks like a nice car that must have had some money spent in the not too distant past as the paint lacquer hadn't flaked off.

The spoiler and badges aren't standard. In fact the cars never had a spoiler originally. The closest you got was a dealer fit option.

Rust can be anywhere on these now. You've named most of the hotspot. Additionally you'll need to take all the arch liners out to see what's hiding. You'll likely have some in the boot floor seems and the end of the sills. You could also take the wiper cover off to look in the scuttle to see if anything is in there.

Only other thing to add is make sure the cambelt and balance shaft belts have been done with it standing so long.

Hi and welcome to the forum smile

Keeping coupés alive is what the Club is all about and your challenge to get this 16vt - now a rare model - going again is to be admired smile Are you planning to do the work yourself? Some of your neighbour-owners have used Fast Autocare in Stockton which isn't far from you but there'll be a bit to do before you reach that stage.

Out of interest are either of the other coupés visible in the last photo also 16 valves?

Hey there, planning to do as much work myself as I can, to try keep costs down and its a good learning experience, and yes one of the other 2 coupes is 16v non turbo and the other a 20v non turbo and I know Barry at FAST, he's sorted bits on my Mito and used to be the garage my parents went to when they had less reliable Italian cars in the past.

Hi there! About the corrosion, you got it pretty much right.
Out of the rare parts, the thermostat is still available new - however it is pretty expensive. There are options for repairing it - either by installing Punto thermostat core in the thermostat body, or by removing the thermostat core and fitting an inline thermostat like from Renault 5.

Other things to bear in mind are:
- always keep the oil level more than 3/4 full with oil
- use quality oil, possibly 10w60
- keep an eye on oil pressure - if less than 1.1 bar when hot, it might indicate worn crank and balance shaft bearings
- replace camshaft and balance belt ASAP. You can even remove the balance belt entirely.
- preventive maintenance wise - you can replace brake master cylinder, if it is not leaking yet, it might start leaking in the brake servo thus ruining it. You can replace water hoses with silicon ones, and silicon hose is available for the turbo intake, which is prone to cracking.

Shocks are available new - TRW front/rears seem to be the desired ones, however Monroe also supply them.

Hey thanks for the welcome,

Yep I was 90% sure the spoiler wasn't standard and I knew for a fact the Abarth badges weren't standard, thanks for confirming that.

The paint is in pretty good condition, just on the drivers side c pillar the paint has faded quite a bit there. And I've already noticed it's had a few rust repairs already when I was checking it.

As hinted above, at the extreme ends of the scuttle panel are where leaves etc gather, tucked into the corners, which you need to get rid of.

Looks like your first job is to clear a path to get the garage entrance clear...

Yep, the first coupe is getting moved tomorrow, as my uncle wants it's rear subframe to go on the Sedicivalvole thats in the garage and i need the headliner out of it since its got a fairly new one on, once thats done the scrap man is coming to take it and the 2nd coupe away to their sad demise so within the next month I'd say I should be able to have mine in the garage.

Had a good look today under the carpets, light surface rust on the floor pan in some areas, and it looks to have new metal on the seat mounts and has rust repairs along the floor next to the doors, pininfarina badges on the rear wernt in properly so quite a bit of rust behind them annoyingly but had a tap around and didn't make any holes so it's not catastrophic ahah.

The aim for tomorrow is to get the car ready to move, and to harvest parts I need from the other 2 coupes.

That's a real shame that 2 are going to the breakers. If this is unavoidable take the chance if you have the time to save everything you can from window motors, consoles, grab handles and even the bonnet release handle from inside; I can't remember how much would suit the 16vt under the bonnet. Oh and the spacesaver wheels.

Maybe the 16v rims would be useful too unless the towtruck requires them fitted for uplift.

Yeah the 20v is in a really bad shape up front, rust everywhere, and is missing half an engine, my uncle was rebuilding it but then he had a second child and put a stop to that. He did want to keep them all but he is moving from the house the cars are at and his new place only has space for 2 project cars and my grandma is moving into this house and she doesn't want 3 coupes sat on her drive, so my uncle decided to take the 156 as his wife wants it and the Sedicivalvole, but my grandma agreed that the blue coupe can stay if I had it and it went into the garage.

I'm not sure on the condition of the 16v but I do know it has basically prestine LE interior in it which I'm going to get out of it, and I was looking to take the rims from the 16v as the ones on mine are in a pretty bad shape and i prefer the silver rims to black, if the scrap man needs rims on it we can just swap the rims between the cars, or put the 20v rims on it since the 20v has some alfa rims on at the moment and the 20v rims are just sat in the garden along with another set of Alfa rims. So maybe the plan is to put the alfa rims on the ones going, I'll find out more tomorrow.

My uncle had a habit of buying stock and lots of spares from Alfa/fiat dealerships and stuff, so there is basically a whole car worth of parts in the loft and I'm assuming there will be more in the garage but I'll certainly be taking parts of the other 2 assuming 1 they fit and 2 they are in good condition.

It was said above, but some bits are getting quite hard to come by. Might be worth doing a trawl of say ebay to see what bits people need? Bits like the badges can be difficult to source. Maybe an extra few quid to be had if you don't need them as I presume the scarp man is paying scrap weight rather than for breaking?

Morning Jam

Nice to have another member in the NE.

You have a fantastic opportunity for a great project.

As others have said, have a very good look at the cars that will go. There are so many parts that could be invaluable, either to you or others.

With your project, take your time and plan. Have tasks that you can do while you wait to find parts on the net, etc.

There are loads of supporters in the club who will go out of their way to help. Do remember though, that some only go on the site once a week or so. Answers may tsje a little while.

Best wishes

Paul L

Hey there Paul,

I don't suppose there is many of us from NE, I don't think I've ever seen a Coupe on the roads except my uncles. Although even the youngest Coupes would have been 5 years old when I was born.

I'm currently in the process of taking bit and pieces from the other coupes, so far mainly interior bits, got LE seats and grab handles, all in great condition from the 16v (previous owner got it fully kitted out with LE bodykit and interior on a standard 16v), centre console, someone had sprayed mine blue, but done a bad job and broke a few bits so I grabbed the one from the 16v, I grabbed the floor mats from the 20v as mine has non, took the boot lid from the 16v as mine was dented and the aftermarket spoiler was full of water and I didn't want the spoiler anyways

other bits I'm going to take for sure is, headliner from the 20v as mine has sagged, exhaust from the 16v, mine doesn't have one currently and the 16v has a full stainless one, going to take the lights and fog lights as mine has non. potentially take the rear light cups if I can get them out cleanly, mine are pretty bad on the drivers side.

anything else I should take assuming in good condition?

Ill also get a project thread up for this

Keep a spare set of headlights and fog lights; the w/washer tank from your 16v; the battery tray (for refurbing if req), wiper motor, headlight levellers, a couple of horns and a rad grille (if req)....small but useful in the future are the white plastic serrated panel clips that secure the interior trim panels to the body. You'll be removing all these to get at the headlining.

Door seals and boot seals, if they aren't torn within the folds.

Check the boots for tool kits smile

yep have done.

I've got a unopened new 16vt rad grill and other things from when my uncle bought parts that he didn't really need at the time, got a loft full of new unopened parts from throughout the years, got the tool kit from the 16v didn't think to take the battery tray but that's probably a good idea if the one in the 16v is in good condition, the 20v didn't have one in it, the horns look quite new in mine, and the battery tray looks quite clean, just a bit of surface rust in some areas. haven't checked under the bonnet of the 16v yet too see how good condition things like the battery tray, horns etc are like but ill take them if they are good.

Ill check the seals and take them if they are good.

thanks for the recommendations on stuff to take off would never have thought to take off things like horns or battery trays aha.

If the 16NA has an engine, the crankshaft, block is interchangeable with the turbo. The crankshafts are prone to wear, so don't throw it away! I think even the head is interchangeable, maybe slightly different ports and definitely different camshafts.

Try to salvage the Brake servo from both 16 and 20v, ABS pump and ABS sensors (especially the rears are not available new anymore). Soak them in WD-40, unscrew the bolt holding it and gently push/pull the sensor from both sides, while simultaneously twisting it in the hole to release it from the rust holding it. Take great care taking them out, they are prone to cracking.

Electrical wise, there are a few modules and relays under the dash which can come in handy, the 16v version electrics is the one you're after.

Welcome Jamjam, you certainly look like you've got your work cut out with your new project.
First thing I'd do is check all the usual areas for corrosion as it's been sitting outside without a cover, boot inner arches where the meet the floor under the side covers, floor pans and directly behind the front struts where the brake lines runs to the front flexes, these areas are prone to rust and fail an MOT test because they're all within 30cm of either subframe mounts or seat belt anchor points.

Also invest in a copy of the Coupe fiat manual which can be purchased online in the link below.

Coupe Fiat manual.

Joe.

While you're stripping the 16v engine, salvage the cam sensor and distributor, the ignition coil and amplifier, and the thermostat. Probably worth hanging on to the ECU too. They won't work with your 16v (though the thermostat can be modified) but someone will likely want them sooner or later. There are only a handful of 16NA left on the road...

Neil

(and I second the recommendation for the book laugh )

Thanks for reminding Jam about that Joe.

Will someone give direction to eper and the black and white manuals that i downloaded from somewhere or other.

I also like 'Bringing a Fiat Coupe 20vTurbo Plus Back to life' on the Detailing World website.

I'll see what I can grab from the 16v for if people need bits like that.

Also just purchased the book too.

aha yeah I'm super excited, absolutely love the Coupe and to have my own is something I certainly didn't think id have especially at 18, excited to learn too, my uncles going to teach me welding, rust repairs, painting, electronics, etc as he is nearly finished his lengthy Tipo Sedicivalvole restoration and that car looks brand new with no rust on it anywhere. glad to see everyone else here seems to be just as excited as I am. I've also been looking at other coupe restoration threads on here and the fiat forum to have an idea on what to expect when I strip everything down, ill take a look at that on detailing world too then.

Yep, its been a while but my uncle wants a few bits from the 16v engine for the Tipo 16v

And my book has arrived, had a quick skim through, seems very good and informative.

Hey there Paul

The weather certainly hasn't been very nice up here so far this year but some progress towards getting my Coupe in the garage has been made, the first donor 20v is ready to go to the scrap, I've taken a few bits, battery tray, all the badges, the fuel filler cap, the locks as it had new locks put on it in 2017 but the keys never got coded into the car, the steering wheel I'm not sure weather I should keep and try sell the seats and the door cards or just leave them in the car for the scrap, my uncle took the rear subframe off with me as he needs it for his Tipo 16v which is currently what's holding up the use of the garage.

Next week I'm off college so ill have plenty of time, weather permitting, to take the few bits I need from the 16v, exhaust, badges headlights, my uncle needs some engine bits for the Tipo 16v too from the Coupe 16v and then that's off to the scrap too, again with the 20v I don't know whether its worth keeping and selling the door cards etc

Onto my car, I haven't really done much to it, just changed over some locks from the 20v trying to get the steering wheel off as its seen better days but its not budging, although in the next few months my uncle said he will go over the engine with me and try to get her running again so that would be great to have her running in the not so distant future

Had another look in the loft and found, 1x new unopened red 16v badge, new unopened rear fiat badge 2x new wheel arch liners although 1 of them seems to not be an original part, 2x standard door cads, 2x LE door cards 2x new wing mirror glass, some new anti roll bar links (I think) and some new suspension bushes, there is probably so much more coupe related parts in that loft but there is just so much random stuff I'm not to sure what cars some of the bits are actually for

I plan on making sure no more water gets in behind the Pininfarina badges next week to keep her a bit more dry until the Tipo 16v is done and out of the garage, which should be within a few months now

Gosh !

I didn't expect such a wonderful reply so quickly.

You seem to be doing things properly, bit by bit and finding your feet.

If you have the space, then do keep stuff. You could sell some of it or swap or part exchange with other owners.

Your uncle sounds like a brilliant bloke. All of us need one.

Give us another update next month please.

Photos ?

Paul

Haha yeah I'm on here like everyday just checking for new threads and reading old ones to try learn more about the car, see what issues other people have had with their coupes and ways to prevent/fix things should they go wrong, which so far has been extremely useful.

Yep, having the two donor cars to learn and practice on has been very helpful in working out how to do stuff the proper way.

Ill keep the door cards then, ill give the seats a quick clean up and if they clean up nicely ill see about keeping them and putting up for sale/exchange.

Yeah my uncle is like everyone on here, loves his Italian cars and hates to see them go bad and end up needing the scrap, and he is quite good at fixing them up too, sadly he just doesn't have much time to work on project cars hence him giving me the Coupe.

Only got a few pics of what I've done since the last lot of pics, Ill have more pics next week when I get some more bit and bobs off the 16v and sealed up the Pininfarina badges on my Coupe.

Tesco freezer bags being put to great use keeping all the bits I take off together and labelled.

Your report is just the sort of thing that I like to hear about.

Someone else in the Club might recommend that you start a new thread in the Projects section.

Your photos and freezer bags suggestion are useful to other new starters.
