Having searched a little, it seems the last thread on this was 2010. I have remained faithful to AVG for over a decade, but I think the time is right to look again. It's not that it does a bad job, but it does things like install its own version of "safe-search" and other interfering nonsense. My subscription (I've always used the pro version) expires in December, so what is the current rat's pyjamas of W7 64 virus protection? Would look at free or reasonable subscription...

I gave up on AVG this year Jim as it seemed to slow things down too much.

I went over to Avast - a paid version for the PC with the club's stuff on it and the freeby one for the others including one for Android which is apparently hard to find.

Not had any problems with it on any of the machines.

Yes I agree Pete, AVG does slow down PC.
Norton AV proved to be OK for me this year, performed well in background and didn't get in the way with too many annoying messages.
May stick with it as I'm due for renewal also in a couple of days, though I will buy a new oem copy on disc as it's way cheaper than renewing online

Microsoft Security Essentials (which we have on a couple of PC's) is very good, is free and as good or better than most paid for ones. Download is here
They don't advertise it outside their own websites as they would fall foul of euro monopoly laws and unfair competition legislation etc. A bit like the Internet Explorer browser trouble they got into in the past.
Don't Use MSE if you have used your windows Licence No. over several PCs or have a "well used" licence no. wink

THe best and quickest AV around BAR NONE. This is what we use at work and for our clients. Its super quick, tiny install and a very very small footprint.

Ok its not free but it wont break the bank.

I went from being a long time AVG user to Avast a couple of years ago due to the same reasons as listed above. I've since found it (AVAST) starting to be a bit too intrusive in telling me what it's doing for my liking and I don't like having to re-register it every year.

I'm trialling MSE in my laptop and if I like it (and so far I haven't even noticed that it's there) I'll swap my main machine over as well.

Thinking about it, probably both of those recommendations came from this forum rather than any techy websites!

Up yours Photobucket.

I think Which magazine did a test on all of them and it came out top after taking into account its price tag laugh

I was singing the praise of Avast.

Alas it is no more.

I was stupid enough to change from my original POS Windows 8, to the new improved even bigger POS Windows 8.1.

It lost the bloody thing, so no doubt I have got something like Norton infecting the machine.

I just have SPybot S&D and then Microsoft defender/essentials/what ever the next brand they will call it!

I did also run for a year with nothing and the world did not end but my PC was much faster.
