Hi all - I'm about to order two new tyres (225/45/R16) from Camskill and am just wondering which to go for. I've always had Toyo T1-Rs in the past but fancy a change.

Conti's come in at £232 delivered
Yoko's come in at £240 delivered so not a lot of difference in the price.

I don't do track days so only need them for fast road use.

Recommendations please.......

I have AD08's all round on my 340 Bhp porto and there amazing! There very good in the wet and the by far the best tyres I've came across in the dry! The faster you drive, the warmer they get, the better they grip. I have them in 225/45/16 and paid 500 fitted. They look pretty smart too..

The only down side I will say to them is that, because the rubber is quite soft, they tend to pick up and throw stones everywhere lol, over taking, even changing lanes there pretty horrendous for it tbh. But imho there a bloody good all rounder and for fast road use, from spring to Autumn, I'll certainly be buying them again smile

I used to have the Continentals and really liked them. Tried them back to back with a pair of toyos and even just straight line flooring it the Continentals were noticeably better.
I also used the continentals for a track day and wasn’t disappointed. However this was before I experienced the toyo 888’s.

With regards to 'soft'... how would you rate the wear between those Falken, Conti and Yoko?

I have conti 5's and they are excellent all round. I know a couple of others using contis that are very happy with them too.

I have Yoko ADO7 on my Coupe and had Conti SC3 on my 147. The Yokos are more of a street/race tyre while the Contis are a performance road tyre. Both are excellent at what they do. I would go for the Contis for your use.

I used to have conti's in 215/40/17 and i have a complete different opinion on them.even in wet conditions for road use i struggled to have traction. Now with Dunlop's i can floor it in 2nd gear in the same conditions.
Same difference in dry conditions.

I'm running ADo8's on the front! Great for fast road use or track! You should choose them over the TR-1's on tread design alone!

I'm having doubts on the Conti's as they're quite a couple of years old. The only Conti's in the 225/45/16 size are the 2's. The Advans even LOOK very soft on your photo's. I'm convinced they'll offer very good grip, even compared to the standard P-Zero's which I used to have until 2 years ago, but I'm interested in the thread wear as well. I don't want to be spending 600 quid every 6 months, rather give that on items that are more critical to the health of the car. Say a new MAF or so when the time is there.

Regarding wear with the AD08's, I've had mine on the car for give or take 1500 mile. I only really use my car for meets, blasts and days out so, you could say it's being a fairly hard 1500 mile. I've not yet swapped them front to back, the rears look still virtually brand new, the fronts look like there is a little bit less tread, just on the inside/outside of the tyre, the center tread looks the same.

I've taken them off now, as my car is coming off the road shortly, not sure if you can tell from these pics how worn they are?

This one was one of the fronts, still loads of meat..

They still look reasonably new in the flesh, I'd say they were due a swap (front to back) mind. I guess it all depends how you drive your car. I reckon if you bought a set, used them for 3 to 4 months of the year, swapping them regularly they could last a long time, thats what im doing anyway.

The grip they offer is staggering, I went up heartside last week(an amazing mountain accent in the lakes) I was the only FWD car there, along side 2 Scoobys, an evo and 2 GT4's and it was pi**ing down, and after not even a mile I had utmost confidence in them. yes you'll pay 500 odd quid, and that is a lot of money, but for the fun I've had out of these so far, makes it worth it for me.

Next time I'm at the lockup, I'll measure the tread and see what they have actually used in 1500 mile.

I've done 8000 miles on mine Kayjey, including a Spa and a couple of track days and still a few mm tread left... Not bad!

On a FWD car, the advice is to leave the best tyres on the rear http://www.klebertyres.co.uk/KleberUK/front/index.jsp?codeRubrique=8032005184616

"Fitting new or least-worn tyres at the rear

If you are only changing two tyres out of four, whether your vehicle has front- or rear-wheel drive, we recommend fitting the newest tyres on the rear axle. This will give you greater safety in the event of unexpected and difficult situations (emergency braking, tight bends, etc..) especially in the wet. The front tyres generally wear quicker than the rear, especially with front-wheel drive (which applies to the majority of vehicles nowadays). Numerous tests have demonstrated that it is easier to control the front axle than the rear.
This is why KLEBER advise you to fit the new or least worn tyres on the rear axle for :

better grip when cornering
greater safety."

Oh I defiantly agree that's the safer thing to do, however at 125 quid a tyre and over 300 bhp at the front wheels, I prefer to swap them often, mainly to wear the tyres eavenly front to back so that I get the most life out of them, but also to get optimum grip from the front too, ie accelerating in low gears (in any weather conditions) I personally would never let my fronts wear right down to the point of needing changing, where I would probably have no grip at all for accelerating/cornering, while the rears still have loads of tred left.

I don't mean any offense or to argue, I'm just saying that I swap my tyres often, always have, always will.

Besides it would bug me having 2 brand new tyres on the car and 2 part worn tyres, I'd rather change the 4 at once... That could be my OCD kicking in mind laugh

I tend to wear down the front, swap the rears to the front and fit new ones to the rear. Proving they don't exceed 6 years from date of manufacture then it works out the same as rotating them. smile

This is definitely how you should do it. I've used a few different tyres on my coop and they all seem to take a few miles to start working properly. It's as if they have a 'skin' that needs wearing through? A stint on the rear axle warms them up nicely so that when you wear the fronts out and put the next new tyres on the rear, the fronts are in prime condition when they're swapped and the brand new rears have the best tread - which you want for resisting aquaplaning smile

F****** b****** thing...

The "skin" is the release gel they use to stop tyres sticking to the moulding machine. This wears off after about 50 miles or so.

Very timely discussion, I'm looking at tyre options for my Coupe which is now predominantly used for hillclimbing so the AD08 is high up my list as it is eligible for the road modified class in current MSA rules. Will probably leave it until next spring though as I have too much tread left on the current tyres to throw them out and also want to get another couple of wheels so I can have a set of tyres to use over the winter.

Good to see that the AD08 works well on the Coupe.

Very true, the car has 188k miles on the clock and is on the original shocks! Hopefully sorted some via this forum so next time out at the end of August it should be quicker. I beat both the Audis in the class though which has been my current target, the S3 was slower than usual this weekend and the TT-RS was there for the first time but slower than I was on my first outing in April. Next target is to beat my brother in his 944 but that won't happen without better suspension, brakes and tyres!
