It does appear to try and increase torsional rigidity about the longitudinal axis and keep the front/rear geometry aligned. Would be interesting to take some measurements with and without. Maybe just jacking a corner up and seeing how the doors fit? With all the does it work or not, it's kind of irrelevant. I'd be more concerned about adding an extra shear plane to the seatbelt mounts with those two braces.
