Just wanted to know if I were to take a car off the road say for a year, would I still need to insure it even if its stored away in a garage ?

And as long as nothing happens to it when in the garage,eg: roof falls in, leak ruins the paintwork etc., or someone breaks in and trashes it...you might want to consider 'off road' cover if there is such a thing?

Here "Downunder", specialist motor insurers do offer cover for "laid up" vehicles, be they stored or undergoing restoration.

I used it when my Coupe was off the road for a major engine rebuild several years ago.

Just thinking out load here; but might you be covered by your house/contents insurance if the garage is at your house?

When a car is SORN'd, are you allowed to drive it to a MOT garage, or to get it repaired?

Yes you can drive it to an MOT station when SORN, but it must be booked in and insured.

Unfortunately, motor vehicles are usually specifically excluded from Household Insurance Policies.

There are 'laid-up' motor policies that provide cover for a car for Fire and Theft Only whilst in a garage - I can arrange one of these, if interested please give me a call.

Sarah - just wondered but in that case can Neilwillies do a policy for the combination of the two i.e. a normal policy to cover the summer months and laid up policy for the winter.

This year I sorn'ed mine from start of Oct through to the end of Feb. I'll be taxing the car tomorrow. Although I insured the car for the whole year I'm conscious that it's been off the road unused for 5. I'm quite keen to do the same again: 7 months on the road; 5 months off. Is this do-able or materially likely to make any real difference? Regards

All policies we offer are 12 month motor policies, so whether you were to take out a Fire & Theft/Laid Up policy or a Comprehensive policy it would have to be a 12 month policy.

Unfortunately you cannot take out one policy that is a combination of the two to cover a 12 month period. You can obviously take one out and cancel it and then take out another but both would be non-refundable, so you would end up paying twice!

What I do is take out a limited mileage policy for 12 months, bearing in mind our car is always sorn during the winter months, calculating the mileage we expect to do during the period it will be on the road. This way we benefit from a reduced premium due to low miles and have fully comprehensive cover at all times, just in case, you never know what might happen.
