After going to the track day the other day with a run out in a couple of motors i really want a track motor.

Out in the cinq the other day realised how much fun a it can be.

What track cars do you have or used to have.

I will be looking at a car over ten years old, easy to work on, small and under £1k to buy. I can then insure on classic insurance.

Any suggestions, happy to learn aswell to do things. Im thinking a 106 gti, ax gt if i can find one. Maybe even a clio 1.8 16v.

Let me know

just strip a VIS out and track that. no turbo no issues just make it handle like on rails and lighten it as much as you can

As you know after seeing the Cinq, lightness is the key if you don't have mega power. I would say a 172 but that's a bit predictable laugh

Also, don't be fooled into thinking the cost will stay under £1k.

Remember James' cinq build cost several times that smile

Go with a saxo, vtr or vts. Loads of off the shelf parts available.

Too slow.

1k is too little a budget for a decent track car.

As i have siad before a fully stripped 172 just about kept with a tuned non stripped dc5 on track running 250bhp not many tuned coupes could.

Any of these would be perfect, especially the 205 or 325. Trackdays are not about racing, so you don't actually have to go faster than anyone else... You just want the car to handle as well as possible and be good fun.

I ran a c.£1k 306 GTI-6 as a road/track car and it was great.

Personally I'd probably go for an old MX5 but that doesn't fit the Jap bit. Didn't look closely at the 145 ad but make sure it's the earlier twinspark motor with chain-driven cams. Reasonably bullet-proof. Suspension bushes are probably the biggest issue with that car - but the same is true for many cars of that period.

These are super in the corners, http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motor...ition/109264860

I had one briefly and loved it, Really! I found the 130bhp claim a bit false though, They need decent exhusts etc to get them flying.

I used to run a Honda CRX - very lightly modded (a grand's worth of Bilstein suspension) and it absolutely flew

Fantastic engine, low weight, good basic chassis geometry.

Get a rust-free V-Tec and thrash it silly - it'll take everything you can throw at it and keep coming back for more

Imo, the 205 gti is too old and fragile to track regularly. I'm a big fan of them, but I wouldn't take mine to a track day.

If you go down the 205 route don't pay the premium for a good gti shell. Buy an injected base model and bolt the goodies on. Things like anti roll bars and increased camber rear arms bolt straight on. Likewise you could fit a tuned Saxo vts, or gti6 motor and spank far more expensive machinery. The good thing with the peugeot is that it's tried and tested.

For 1K I think you could build a vary capable machine.

1 k will get you a bucket of a track car fact.

buy a 172 cup strip it dont mod it prep it with nice rubber and go simples forget vts you would need a cammed setup to be nearly as quick a 172 cup.

keep N/A for track in my op.

And remember the car will need prep for a event which isnt cheap brakes, oil, filter, track alingment.

dont waste money on tuning them as from my own experiance tuning them was very bad gains for ££

To add 172 wont get passed that much im trying to find the video vs tuned dc5 smile

Saxo VTS stripped out would be cheap to run, cheap to buy and reasonably quick.

Coopless!

as promised http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZI_woEhEJs&feature=player_embedded

Bear in mind the dc5 in video is running 250 r888's and is quicker than e46m3's after 60mph.

Forget vts

172 drivers remark '

'1st video up,it was at the end of the day, chasing a well driven Integra type R,I was struggling to keep with him on the straights, but was enjoying myself, this to me is what track days are all about.'

Ok been scoping but been offered a track puma.
Fitted with coil overs, race seat, harnesses, updated brakes with tax and test for £450. Sound decent to me but never driven a puma. Assume it's similar to a fiesta.. Any reviews guys

Just sold mine after two pretty faultless years. An absolute joy, huge fun in corners, nippy enough on straights and round about 40mpg..mine was super revvy 1.6....watch rust in back arches...just a big ka really...only sold mine due to lure of 100 hp panda...would recommend puma to anyone after cheap fun car....project puma is great web site...

I'd second what George said here.

I had one for a year, only sold in August. Was a 1.4 but top handling, nippy and the brakes are surprisingly good too. Rear arches the major failing - if they've been done make sure it's a decent job or the problem will just keep coming back.

I do love my mk2 golf gti, had a brace of vr6 engined ones...quick...but I would say the puma would be a better track car...much better handling in my opinion...and do rusty arches matter on a track day special...

I had a clio 1.8 16v with a 172 engine dropped in. Was alot of fun on track but not a car i could use at weekends and i couldnt justify having a car sitting around purely for trackdays so i sold it and brought a coupe 20vt with mods.

Just hoping its going to be as fun as the clio when i get it on track!

Erm........no, not unless you want to spend a fortune on suspension.

Also MGZS V6 - will be a little over a grand though. They handle very well out of the box, and are lighter than you might think.

I'd personally go with a k powered 45 if that was the chosen route. Bolt the role bars over and you've pretty much got a zs for a fraction of the cost. The 1600 motor is revvy and plentiful. Also quite a scene for tuning them.

Sorry - that's B*ll.

ZS has uprated ARB's, stiffer springs (a lot stiffer, and designed to be hard at the rear to reduce understeer) + 20mm lower, better seats for track days, and revised steering rack. (quicker + more feel).

45 is for wafting about in comparison. smile

How does a 300bhp fiat coupe lowered and sticky tyres compare to the above cars on track?

Would be nice to get a comparison from someone that has done a trackday in a coupe with medium upgrades.

I do know there's a difference. But I stand by my comment. Take the roll bars from a zr and bolt them on and you're largely there. A 45 will cost a couple of hundred quid. That leaves a good chunk of cash left for fettling.

Are you sure the steering racks are "quick"? My understanding was that the v6 just has a lock limiter, i.e. quicker lock to lock because it moves less.

Definitely a standard 45 would be pants though.

Pretty sure the rack is different, and by the time you have done the suspension and seats you may as well have just bought a zs v6 with more power that will work well as it is. smile
