Liz and Phil looked really interested ! (not) I saw her picking her nails. It was too late for an 80+ year old lady, who I'm sure would much prefer to be tucked up at home with a cup of cocoa watching events!

Klaas, the BBC sport website is pretty good if you have decent broadband. I'm currently leching, sorry, watching the beach volleyball on BBC 3 - the red button option lets you watch EVERY sport, so at the moment there is rowing, archery and a couple of very fit Russians in very small bikinis rolling around in the sand

Back to the opening ceremony. So the answer to who is going to light it is 7 people I've never heard of. Passing on the torch, or a cop-out? I assume some of them have actually achieved something rather than may possibly do so one day, and I'm just not aware of it?

Possible future Olympians, Jimbo. Some or all may never achieve anything. Given the hype (and betting) on who was going to light it, I still think it was a cop out.

Went to Box Hill and watched the cycling. Fantastic day, and credit where it is due, the organisation was superb. Shame the GB team could not win, but they had to chase every attack with no help from anyone else and they just ran out of steam. Here is a pic from the day.

It was a fantastic race today, Team GB looked so in control for most of it but, as you say, just couldn't do it all on their own. Off to the shooting tomorrow for me, Go Team GB

Just been watching the ladies hockey.... always nice to see the Aussies lose, especially to the Kiwis! No love lost between those 2 teams... Next up are the Dutch; a fantastic team and one of the hot favourites (along with our girls who play their first game this afternoon).

There are questions being asked as to why the Stadiums are not full, and it is pretty obvious. A big percentage of tickets were given to corporate sponsors, a lot of them are still sitting on desks in offices ad companies have no interest in the events they are marked for. The FA Cup has empty seats, in the corporate areas. And anyone who has ever enjoyed corporate hospitality will know how few people return after lunch or drinks breaks. If you want full stadiums sell the tickets to those who want to pay. If any ticket is given away free it has zero perceived value. The hockey is one such event, a bit of rain forecast and those "free" tickets will be negative value. The whole ticket issue debarcle is a farce.

Goes to show that labelling it as "The People's Games" is a crock of sheet!
The fat cats and corporations get all the best tickets, everyone else can fight it out in an online raffle.

Underwhelming performance so far by Team UK (NOT TEAM GB ). Lots of near misses, a sensational performance by the gymnasts, a great effort from the equestrian team who are in with a excellent chance, but keep an eye on our two hockey teams. Both the ladies and the men have had good wins in their first pool matches, and for those of you unfamiliar with modern hockey the games are much quicker and more entertaining than football.

ANYTHING is more entertaining than football.
[ducks for cover] ....especially English football. Mind you, the Spanish are out already, even with a team containing several of their Euro 2012 stars

We all went down to London last week the day before the opening ceremony. Massively impressed with the whole Olympic park - and Mrs Nello thought the Westfield Stratford Shoppng centre at the park entrance was equally impressive!

It has been a very disapointing games for the hosts so far, but no-one seems to want to say so. I am enjoying it for the most part, because I am enjoying the sport for the sake of it rather than wanting an excuse to 'whoop it up'.
Negatives:
a) I know it was ever thus, but we seem to have a number of commentators who appear to be commentating because they are 'personalities' rather than being able to offer some sort of insight. Banal witterings at best but they are also at times incredibly wrong - and don't actually seem to have bothered to get to grips with the sport they are commentating upon. Even those who are the professional link people can't seem to get a sentence out without a few "urms".
b) The coverage of the men's road race was a national embarrassment.
It is just because I want to believe that we actually do these things well. When we get a premium sporting event I want to see Auntie setting the standard.
And I am with those who find 'Team GB' grating, sounds like an inoculation.

The trouble is the BBC are not producing the pictures, they are just overlaying the commentary.
The mens cycling road race was truely awful. However the two presenters are cycling experts. Chris Boardman did a great job on the segments on the Tour programmes, but is less experienced with running race commentary. Hugh Porter was an excellent race commentator, but last did a road race many years ago, and like Eurosports David Duffield, I fear is now well past his best. It does not help that thay had rubbish facilities too.
The blame to me is squarley on the people rpoducing the TV feed. One infuriatingly frustrating issue for me is why for the swimming events we only ever see the names of the top 3?
As for Team GB, that does not annoy me but our results so far for our home games are absolutely terrible and we need Cycling and Rowing to perform in order to beat Beijing as far as I can see.
I was truely moved by the viewing experience on Box hill watching the mens road race, to the point that I am still dissapointed it is over. The womens race too, albeit viewed at home, was very moving.
Once the games start properly (i.e the sporting events) I love the olympics. Having it on home soil though exposes the worst elemenst of the build up, a bit like seeing Angelina Jolia without the make up and before she was scrubbed up for a red carpert event. It kills the magic a bit.

God, I am getting so fed up with this 'team GB' business. The commentators must have been instructed to just keep pumping it out, to brainwash 'the nation'. Grrr

Watched the men's cycle race at Shere on Saturday. Great atmosphere, huge number of BMW support/team vehicles, BMW have got a great deal-all the police bikes and cars were BMW too.
