bit of advice needed on this one

a couple of weeks ago driving home i noticed in a layby where safety partnership van usually park , a plan white transit with police writen on the side
it was on the other side of the road with it arse facing the oncoming traffic....and it was virtually dark,
then i suddenly noiced a flash out of the back of it and it dawned on me that it was a speed camera

i thought thats a bit naughty as it must dazzle the on comimg traffic which is why i thought fixed flash cameras are on the same side of the road they are monitoring and flash you from behind to avoid dazzle and they also have lines marked on the road to measure your speed

well in my stupidity tonight i passed through the same road and when i was approx 1/4 of a mile maybe a little less i noticed a flash in my mirror(looked slightly redish)

my first thoughts were "bugger that vans there and i didnt see it"
i looked at my satnav and it read 37 and it was a 30 although iwas then moving into a 50

now my question is (i know its wishful thinking)

has anyone had any dealings with these vans
its was dark , i was quite away from it and would it really be flashing speeders with the risk of on coming traffic being dazzled

this was a very discreet van with just police on the side but definitely had shevrons on the back doors....also can a camera that flashes judge your speed without the lines on the road like gatsos

no simpaphy wanted just advise

Be careful as there is a lot of loop holes, theres a book you can buy on internet which was writern by a ex traffic cop which is brill. It is around £25 ive had to use it and got away with 3 speeding fines and points. I dont speed but when you travel all over the contry doing over 200+miles aday you do slip up with the speed limits form time to time. angel

what i dont get is

1 the van had little or no markings

2 it flashed like a gatso but was facing the oncoming traffic on the other side of the road

3 there were no distance lines on the road like a gatso

4 it was virtually dark and i thought i was to far away

oh and i meant to say that it wasnt flashing the lorry behind becouse when i saw the flash and looked in my mirror it looked like th elorry was only then beside the van and not passed it

well theres alot of crap realy as the vans dont have to be marked if there is signs up for cameras which i got told when i got busted. they are a independent frim which is for hire to the police so they are not police just some bod in a van which park were ever they like. I got done on a motorway up near york one morning and the van was on the hard shoulder just over the hill so i couldnt see him. i told the police this, but i had no prove so un lucky!! if the van has parked up on double yellows etc... which is against the law then stop and take a pic with reg num etc.. and they wont be able to do you that time. its wrong very wrong

1/ They never need markings, otherwise they'd have to flash every single car / bike and have 1.000.000 looking at markings every night.
2/ I'm sure the reason they flash from the rear is not to not dazzle you while flashing, otherwise... what about oncoming traffic!?
3/ You speed, you pay the bill. Be a man. Just my opinion. And that of many on here I'm quite certain.

you speed you pay the bill which is very ture. You just get fed up with the police picking on the easy money. I mean i pay insurance tax mot and what ever my car needs it gets. it just when people with no insurance and etc keep driving around with no hassle from the police with a fine there not going to pay and they prob dont have a lience. cry

Just very high level, you don't need to go into details, but how did you get off?

Yes, I'd strongly encourage police to find automated ways for not using indicators, not giving way, drink driving,... and not just focus on speed. I'm of the opinion that if everyone was doing what he had to do on the road, speed wouldn't be such an issue, but unfortunately 90% of people don't.

AFAIK the vans will be police. I wasn't aware they were allowed to use (or possibly not supposed to use)unmarked vehicles for static speed measuring.

Could it have just been traffic monitoring/headlights reflecting?

he without sin cast the first stone......i have no problem with paying the fine bow

1 all gatso cameras have road markings in the area they measure your spreed

2 all gatso cameras are on the same side of the road as the cars they are monitoring , flash from behind and have a shade around the flash to avoid dazzling and causing an accident with on coming traffic

the only point to my post was the similarities this device had to a gatso although it was in a van and has anyone else heard of or come accross anything similar banghead

On the occasion that daughter was done for speeding in the sixteen, the van was parked on the opposite side of the road and grabbing people in both direction, using laser for timing and photograph to identify driver (not all that helpful for going-away cars, but at least I could prove it was her and not me!).

They were not using a flash, but it was in daylight.

Gatso has dipswitches inside, one of which defines whether to flash cars in one (whichever) or both directions. Some countries have legislation that defines cars can only be flashed from the rear, mostly because they only have one official license plate (eg. Belgium where this was changed about 10 years ago, front plates had to be reflective just to allow frontal flashing, yes the front plate is something we have to get made up by a local shop).

In Belgium you will now see flashers hidden in wheely bins, behind bushes, in regular cars parked by the road,... anything.

I'm not saying I'm the one without sin, I've collected my fair share of speeding tickets over the years and never contested the fact I had sped. However in two cases I did contest the fine, one while I was speeding up to not hinder an emergency vehicle (in court I had a witness namely the driver of the emergency vehicle) and once where there were no clear signs showing the limit. I tend to just deal with the consequences of what I do.
