I've already got a mountain bike and do a few short road rides in the week for a bit of fitness. The tyre resistance is starting to annoy so I was thinking about getting a cheap road bike.

I remembered that a client had a Fausto Coppi sitting around the office for the last year or so doing nothing so I've just enquired... It cost him £1,000 a few years ago and he only rode it 6 times. I can have it for £120. It's in great condition. Looks like this:

http://www.vehibase.com/fausto-coppi-k28/photo-1.htm

Any comments? I just want it for a bit of exercise nothing more. It's been nice and warm inside the whole time and the oil is still fresh on the chain. Is it likely to need a new set of tyres?

At that price you can't go wrong. A set of top tyres makes a massive difference to any bike. Michelin Pro Race 4s are well worth it.

That is a good first bike at £1k so worth it for £120 definitely. I doubt you will need to send any money on it for some time, well apart from the tyres laugh

Yup - that looks spot-on for your needs. After an MTB, road tyres are going to seem like they're self-powered (remember plenty of air pressure - 100-130psi+). Tyres?

Fast:
Michelin Pro Race 4 (as per Bockers)
Conti GP4000s

Puncture Resistant & not slow either
Michelin Krylion
Conti 4 Season
Conti Ultra Gatorskin

Hmm puncture resistant could be a good choice given the roads near me rolleyes

I'm excited now, I haven't ridden a road bike since I was 14 laugh

Nah it just means they've got to throw the box around the depot a few more times.

There's no way they'll deliver something that's packaged in a pristine, undented box hehe

Actually, the box is designed to be re-usuable which is sensible. Whether it's FedEx-proof, we'll soon find out!

Thanks, folks. I'm bowled over with it and I haven't even sat on it yet.

Di2 should arrive tonight and I have a set of Pro-Lite Ravenna carbon bars on their way (my Cayo has the old version on & I love them). Saturday will be assembling it all and hopefully giving it a test. Sunday will be the longer ride (provided it's not snowing!).

I should probably get a proper bike fit done at some point too.
