I got rid of my shin splints by putting a second set of insoles into the trainers.

I think Decathlon might have some that might be right, but a good place to start is by robbing an old / spare pair of shoes.

It seems to me that if you're heavy footed (like me) you quite quickly hammer your insoles flat, so need a cheap way to replace them.

I also prefer the very light foam type to gel insoles. Gel seems to have all the answers in theory but you need bounce, not shock absorbency to run fast.

Thanks for the swift response Skinflint, I'll let her know as she'll try anything.

I had a few different trainers and insoles, so I tried a few different combinations until I got the right setup.
Oddly my comfortable pair is now a set of £30 Reeboks (very cheap as running shoes go) with an extra Nike insole. The other bonus is that they are a lot lighter than the Nike Pegasus I was using so I got a bit of extra speed for free too.

Sorry for the slow response. Not at all on track. I got sucked into the Haddenam Howler Cycling Sportive, and abandoned the running. Tomorrow will be the first run since my last post.

Cheers Skinflint.
Not so good this week with a 28.20secs, so I need to get back to at least 2 runs pw, although the Forest Parkrun was pretty slippy with fallen leaves and plenty of mud.... blush

Perfect conditions this morning for a new Parkrun PB of 20:34. Not really deserved as I haven't been running but I was about 3 lb lighter than usual. I'll need to start doing 2 runs PW as well if I want to get quicker.

Well done mate. My PB at parkrun is about 26mins, but since did 23:54 at another 5k event.

I'm trying to get back into running after a major abdominal op in January put me out of action for 6 months. Back to nearly square one from running a half marathon in 1:52 autumn last year, to being too tired to run a 4k in a reasonable time. Gutted.

cry

That must be frustrating but good that you're fit enough after the op to start running again. I guess you know how to get back to doing those times now you've done it once?

Just in case it is any use here's the road closures list. Many are open until 09:30.

The full race doesn't go until 10:15.

I've just signed up for the Picnic Marathon in June. I've never done a marathon before so I thought I'd start with one that is dubbed "easily the hardest marathon in Britain".

There's very little of the course which is flat and it looks horrific.

Training starts tomorrow.

Oooh, a running thread!

I started running in August 2012 at the age of 42 in some kind of pathetic attempt to get fit. I started from zero with, apart from a few bursts of activity in the past, almost no history of exercise. I built up slowly to a point where I was running 5K every other night. That dwindled a bit in the winter, 'cos it's bloody dark where I live! But I've started building up again. I have no desire to become a marathon runner, in fact I have no idea how anyone can be bothered running further than 5k! I just get fed up of it, even with music.

I have been slowly improving my time, with a PB of 25mins 42 seconds for the 5K. I have no real idea if that is any good or not, but seem to be a bit stuck there.

However, I feel a lot better, i've lost the beer belly and my heart rate both resting and recovery is much better so all in all a good thing. I don't really get out of breath that much so could obviously push much harder, but i just don't see the point.

Never thought i'd see the day I'd be commenting on a running thread!

Ali - good for you. Nothing changes until you have a mad moment. Hills are the easy bit if you're light. I definitely couldn't have done a full marathon today.

MrB 25 mins is good - must put you well up above half way if you're Parkrunning.

I came in just under 1:37 today which is more than I hoped for. The pain in my legs is a little more than I bargained for though.

Went for a run last night, first time in a decade...
Managed just under 3k and my legs this morning are threatening to cramp. the lower part of my Calf muscles just above the ankles are especially painful. Anyway my target is to get to where MrB is, i'd rather run 5k fast than 20k slow. This may change though smile

Well I went hill training last night and it nearly killed me.

Only did 2.5 miles distance but had over 1000ft of elevation thrown in there.

I fear that the next 16 weeks of training are going to take me to some pretty dark places .

Didn't do reading as couldn't get a place, probably just as well really.

went for a 10 miler with a colleague on Tuesday last week. 10 miles is fairly easy for me and my colleague, but we decided to challenge ourselves. I am in training for a half iron man triathlon in Septemeber so need to get quicker.

We set ourselves the challenge of finishing the 10 miles in under 1h 20 mins. This would mean running 16.1k at 5 min km pace.

Just fell shy and averaged 5:05 per/km which was a little frustrating. (I feel i should add that i swam a mile in my lunch break beforehand)

Trouble is now I am suffering badly with my right knee. Looks like a week or 2 of for me.

Hadn't noticed this thread before.

I used to run quite a lot, did loads of competitions in my youth, then stopped for around 10 years to play football instead, before returning to running about 12 years ago.

Recently I've struggled for the motivation and or enthusiasm to go running, but have kept up running 4 miles both Saturday and Sunday with my dog. I really should do some more, especially now the weather is getting brighter. Saw loads of people doing the Finchley 20 at the weekend and its kind of got me thinking about doing some more.

Need to start getting fit as I have a health check coming up soon! shocked
Thought I'd start slow, so did my old warm up route of 1.8m cross country which took me a gentle 17.46.
Long enough to get a sweat on, but hopefully not to drain any on going enthusiasm! laugh
Now to get and doing some more gardening and having a bit of a clear out, so I can concentrate on all things coupe!!!

Good man. What distances are involved?
I have a 5k / 25k / 5k duathlon coming soon.
It is all great until the second run which is utter hell.

It's a Sprint Triathlon.

750m swim.
20k bike ride.
5k run.

I'm lucky enough to be doing it in Hyde Park (and the Serpentine).

It's one of the Olympic Legacy events. Over the same weekend it's the World Tri Event and the Brownlee brothers are doing the Tri after me laugh

I quite fancy doing duathlons over the winter to keep my fitness levels up. Hope it goes well.
