I think this is a fantastic idea for a thread.
I have been running regularly for the past 5 years and find it's a great way to keep both mind and body in balance. It's a while since I actually timed my 5k and 10k distances so have noted the last recorded times.
However, my main target this year is to increase the overall mileage I run and attempt the half marathon distance. The furthest I have ever run in one go is 10.6miles.
I would like to be running on average 100miles a month. This month so far I'm up to 90.99 so a should be able to have a few slack weeks later in the year.
Distance: 5k Current Time: 18'35"
Distance: 10k Current Time: 40'12"
Distance: Half Marathon Current Time: Not attempted yet, but planning one before the end of the month Target Time: 1'35"

Impressive times What terrain are you running on? Are you quite tall by any chance? Thank you Jas, I'm 172cm tall and run a combination of road, track and dreadmill!

We've probably run 1 or 2 of the same races. I've done Peasemore, Highclere and Swindon 10ks in the last 6 months, but you would have probably packed up & gone home by the time I lumbered past the finish line....

Thought so It's all in the stride! Just checked my training log on mapmyrun to see what kind of distances I'm running month-by-month: Sept = 107 miles Oct = 62 miles Nov = 65 miles Dec = 45 miles Jan so far = 41 miles I will be picking up the distance again in March when the lighter evenings get here and I don't have to run in the dark

Went for a short barefoot run this evening, just 200 yards or so! Am just starting off switching to it.
Am aiming to do 'Run to the Beat', a half-marathon, completely barefoot in September.

I did also see a guy running in thin rubber skin-tight foot covers; I presume these are a stepping-stone between trainers and going barefooted.
Could've been something like these odd things. Not tried them, but not sure I would cope with the sensation of the rubber between my toes. I can't even deal with flip flops. Here goes then - might get me out on the road a bit more: best 5k 21mins best 10k 45 mins best half marathon 1hr43 I've been gaining weight about as quickly as my boy since he came along 15 months ago. so have 2 10ks (Newlands Corner, Guildford) scheduled in Feb and March, and the Fleet half at the end of March. Training starts this weekend.

Could've been something like these odd things. Yes they're very similar to what he was wearing - don't fancy them too much myself either!

A guy at work who is into barefoot tried them, and didn't like them. Some people transition via minimalist footwear onto barefoot BUT the books I have suggest that going totally barefoot is the way to go, as only then do you get 100% feedback from the soles of your feet and adopt the correct running form (I never once considered I might not be running efficiently...I just assumed everyone ran the right way). Your soles do toughen up over time, allowing you to run on various surfaces. You can then wear thin soles in ice etc. once your form is correct. The days of heel striking (and thus injuries) are hopefully going to be a thing of the past for me.

How would you start running barefoot? Do people start on the road and just slowly extend the distance? You start slowly, as you're using muscles and ligaments etc. you aren't used to using as much when wearing trainers. The theory is that we evolved barefoot so this is how we're designed to run. It's only recently in our evolution we've worn shoes and only the last few decades trainers. Modern trainers with their spring heels make us run incorrectly. To start of you do 100 yards or so one day, then 200 a couple of days later, then slowly increase the distance. This both toughens the soles of your feet and strengthens your muscles. It takes 3-6 months to get up to 5 miles. You can also go our barefoot walking too to begin with. I've been running on the road as seems the smoothest surface, with less debris than footpaths. The firmer the surface the more feedback you get through your soles and feet, so starting on grass/sand isn't as good. I received these for Christmas: http://www.amazon.com/Barefoot-Running-S...9862&sr=1-1http://www.amazon.com/Barefoot-Running-L...9862&sr=1-2It's odd, on the short runs I've done it does feel different but in a really good way.

Thanks. It does seem to be a long road to doing any competitive distance barefoot.

New Pb 17.54 5k Treadmil
could have pushed more only starting at 16.4kmph finishing well above late 18kmph last 2 mins.
The best technique in my opinion is to average your pace from start to finish exact.
So hard to do!
is their any sub 17 guys on here ?

I did the first ever Newbury 5k parkrun this morning in the snow this morning. There was a big turnout and a really good atmosphere. I'll be back next week. Time was 24:30. http://www.parkrun.org.uk 317 runners for a first ever parkrun in Newbury? That's mighty impressive. We have had 270 max after 1.5yrs of parkrun at the ONLY one in Birmingham.

5k 20:38 in great city race. Looking to be get back to my old time of 17min for 5k, not this year but probably next. Too top heavy at the moment... Park run looks like a good way to benchmark but i HATE running in the mornings. 10k was 45.30 but I was hill hunting and eaten only half an hour before Good idea for a thread, maybe we could share some training tips?
