After a long stint (for me) with out a car after my last 20vt decided to commit suicide and me deciding that if I was to ride though winter I would likely be road kill... I found some spare change and purchased this silly cheep mx5. Comes with a newish roof, AC, head rest speakers... and that's about the level of equipment you get Its a far cry from the bells and whistles of the stilo! All I can say is why didnt I get one sooner, I fully expect it will blow up in a months time but at least it will be simple to fix. I never expected a 20 year old car to be so sharp and focused, the gearbox so joyfull to use. I have taken to ignoring the hair dresser comments, mid life crises and its a girls car jabs. I simply don't care when its this much fun Trevor:

I haven't been caught out yet in it but I can feel that on a wet tarmac corner its liable to leave you pointing forwards first of the hedge. As with any RWD car it got to be treated with respect, The mr2 mk2 I had was far far worse for just "letting go" as it were. Next year when things arnt so tight I can see me getting some track time in with it

Having been using the 500 on and off for months, the mx5 is a rocket ship! Its true what you say, fun at legal speeds and given the close call I had on my bike, Id like to keep my licence points clean. I did a mini service on it last week, an oil filter you can get to from the top Everything is so simple! edit, nice looking 5, you dont see many in black

The only problem with them is the fact some view the mx5 as a hairdressers car. If you can handle that, enjoy the car. Personally I'd have one.
I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

Apparently they are getting near the 1 million build mark for MX5's ...... Never realised the factory where they are built is in Hiroshima

Do they have an LSD? I've only driven one once and was quite surprised by how much it felt like my old 2000 Spider (in a good way). I think they look loads more masculine with the hard top on. IIRC, the LSD went on soon after the 1.8 engine (128bhp) was introduced. Originals didn't have them. Samsite, is yours a Eunos Roadster? I thought only the jap imports had headrest speakers?
F****** b****** thing...

i think the sport models has lsd standard, certainly in the mk2, you got a vt-s or something with 6 speed box, bilsteins and lsd. my import mx5 mk1 had lsd, my mk2 didnt, both were same year as i recall..

Its a Eunos Trappy, the UK versions I had looked at were basic to say the least...and rusty Given the way the car feels, I doubt it has a LSD. Any one know of a way to check for sure?

After some reading mine most likely has a viscous limited slip differential... but due to age its probably no longer working. I shall check tomorrow "for science"

Always fancied one of these, well done Sam! My only worry is; would someone 6'7" fit in it? If you only ever used it with the roof open, and had goggles, You would be good to go. As it goes I struggle a little but compared to the mr2 its a joy to get in and out of. As regards the last bit, respect must be shown in the wet but as far as the dry goes I have to wonder how they lost grip on a road at legal speeds?!

Surely some of us suggested MX-5's way back on one of your 'which car' threads? Make sure you haven't got dodgy Jap tyres fitted, tyres are matched per axle and the pressures are all equal (26psi), as MX-5's are more fussy about this than your average car.

Always fancied one of these, well done Sam! My only worry is; would someone 6'7" fit in it? Any of the ones I've sat in tend to have been badly bent either at the front or rear when the driver has been bitten by a speeding hedge/wall/lampost/bus shelter/telephone pole/deer/horse/cow...... my future father in law is 6'4 and about 17 stone. He only just fits. I contemplated moving the runners back, but alas there is no room to do so. He says he fits just fine but I dont think it suprising that he drives it 99% of the time with the roof down, even at night .

lol, Next year when the panda is finished ill think about taking it of the road and going forced induction.... V8 would be nice but out of the 2.5k budget I would put aside I too would like forced induction although The one we have is the lemon 90bhp engine. so an engine and transmission change would be necessary but better still would be a base 1.8 car or one already tweeked. This looks fun
