After a long stint (for me) with out a car after my last 20vt decided to commit suicide and me deciding that if I was to ride though winter I would likely be road kill... I found some spare change and purchased this silly cheep mx5. Comes with a newish roof, AC, head rest speakers... and that's about the level of equipment you get ![laugh laugh](/forum/images/graemlins/default/laugh.gif) Its a far cry from the bells and whistles of the stilo! All I can say is why didnt I get one sooner, I fully expect it will blow up in a months time but at least it will be simple to fix. I never expected a 20 year old car to be so sharp and focused, the gearbox so joyfull to use. I have taken to ignoring the hair dresser comments, mid life crises and its a girls car jabs. I simply don't care when its this much fun Trevor:

I haven't been caught out yet in it but I can feel that on a wet tarmac corner its liable to leave you pointing forwards first of the hedge. As with any RWD car it got to be treated with respect, The mr2 mk2 I had was far far worse for just "letting go" as it were. Next year when things arnt so tight I can see me getting some track time in with it ![laugh laugh](/forum/images/graemlins/default/laugh.gif)

Having been using the 500 on and off for months, the mx5 is a rocket ship! Its true what you say, fun at legal speeds and given the close call I had on my bike, Id like to keep my licence points clean. I did a mini service on it last week, an oil filter you can get to from the top Everything is so simple! edit, nice looking 5, you dont see many in black

The only problem with them is the fact some view the mx5 as a hairdressers car. If you can handle that, enjoy the car. Personally I'd have one.
I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

Apparently they are getting near the 1 million build mark for MX5's ...... Never realised the factory where they are built is in Hiroshima ![smile smile](/forum/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif)

Do they have an LSD? I've only driven one once and was quite surprised by how much it felt like my old 2000 Spider (in a good way). I think they look loads more masculine with the hard top on. IIRC, the LSD went on soon after the 1.8 engine (128bhp) was introduced. Originals didn't have them. Samsite, is yours a Eunos Roadster? I thought only the jap imports had headrest speakers?
F****** b****** thing...

i think the sport models has lsd standard, certainly in the mk2, you got a vt-s or something with 6 speed box, bilsteins and lsd. my import mx5 mk1 had lsd, my mk2 didnt, both were same year as i recall..

Its a Eunos Trappy, the UK versions I had looked at were basic to say the least...and rusty Given the way the car feels, I doubt it has a LSD. Any one know of a way to check for sure? Yup - give it full beans and drop the clutch... ...an LSD will give you two parallel lines of broadly equal length

Always fancied one of these, well done Sam! My only worry is; would someone 6'7" fit in it? If you only ever used it with the roof open, and had goggles, You would be good to go. As it goes I struggle a little but compared to the mr2 its a joy to get in and out of. As regards the last bit, respect must be shown in the wet but as far as the dry goes I have to wonder how they lost grip on a road at legal speeds?!

Surely some of us suggested MX-5's way back on one of your 'which car' threads? ![laugh laugh](/forum/images/graemlins/default/laugh.gif) Make sure you haven't got dodgy Jap tyres fitted, tyres are matched per axle and the pressures are all equal (26psi), as MX-5's are more fussy about this than your average car.

Always fancied one of these, well done Sam! My only worry is; would someone 6'7" fit in it? Any of the ones I've sat in tend to have been badly bent either at the front or rear when the driver has been bitten by a speeding hedge/wall/lampost/bus shelter/telephone pole/deer/horse/cow...... my future father in law is 6'4 and about 17 stone. He only just fits. I contemplated moving the runners back, but alas there is no room to do so. He says he fits just fine but I dont think it suprising that he drives it 99% of the time with the roof down, even at night ![crazy crazy](/forum/images/graemlins/default/crazy.gif) .

lol, Next year when the panda is finished ill think about taking it of the road and going forced induction.... V8 would be nice but out of the 2.5k budget I would put aside I too would like forced induction although The one we have is the lemon 90bhp engine. so an engine and transmission change would be necessary but better still would be a base 1.8 car or one already tweeked. This looks fun

So how stupid am I to be thinking of going from a 20vt as my daily driver, to a K-reg 1.6 MX-5 with 68,000 miles on the clock?!

Haha Dan - you're becoming quite the car salesman! Just don't start ringing my mobile or turning on my doorstep, that'll be going a little too far!! ![tongue tongue](/forum/images/graemlins/default/tongue.gif) Sam - was it really that bad on the motorway? Did you have the 1.6 or 1.8?

Sam you sold your MX-5!?
Darlo_Nick they are fine on the motorway with a hardtop. Saying that, I drive mine 99% with the roof down, and sit at 60-65mph on the motorway as since selling the Coupe I'm aiming to drive more sedately with less stress!
I've just swapped my vinyl roof with plastic rear screen for a mohair roof with glass window (2nd hand from a Mk2), to improve visibility out the back when the roof is up and to make putting the roof down a 2 second job! You don't need to do this though, and most Mk1's still have their original hood. I also replaced my main carpet as mine was worn from a previous owner not using car mats, and whilst doing so I fitted loads of sound-deadening material. I haven't finished yet but it should make quite a difference.
Whilst I was doing this I found my gear lever gaitors were split badly, and this lets loads of noise in! Once I removed the arm rest section I could see the road! Sam's might have had this too as they split after a few years but are cheap and easy to replace.
There is a really good community on MX5Nutz (or if you're middle-aged+ then MX5OC). Get one, they are so much fun!

I did sell it ![frown frown](/forum/images/graemlins/default/frown.gif) Ill regret it come summer but at the moment me and the mrs are looking to marry and saving for a house as well. This is on top of the 5 being noisy. It also made me no sense to splash out on a hard top as that would have cost more than I bought the car for! Hey ho, made a profit and some one got them self's a none rusty clean mx5 (I still see it about) The mrs's will actually drive the sci as well which comes in useful

Well the one i've seen is a K-reg UK 1.6 with a hardtop roof.
I think I need to give it a good test drive, as to start with i've never been in a MX5 before. Plus I need to see how slow it feels, as that's my biggest worry!!

You should join up on Nutz and see if anyone local will show you what an MX-5 can do ![smile smile](/forum/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) I'm avoiding going down the tuning route (as much as I would love a supercharger). Saying that, I have a bucket seat to fit before the club fish and chip run to Brighton this Sunday.

The mx5 is a good fun car like that has been said. Noisy at speed as said ![crazy crazy](/forum/images/graemlins/default/crazy.gif) A happy medium between the Coupe and an mx5 is the mx6. A lot more reliable than most cars as it is a jap. Can't remember if it is a 4 or 5 seater. Hard top, 2.5 v6. Not as fast as a 20vt of course, but still fun to drive. I had one for about 18 months. Did about 25,000 miles in her. Total spend was a new battery. Only bought her as I was going through a stage of buying all the cars I nearly bought in the past, and nearly bought one when I got my Coupe. The styling won in the end.
