Has it been running without an undertray?
I ended up getting my rad support powder coated for longevity and I always use stainless fasteners on non critical bits, again to stop rust being an issue later, but those are the rustiest oil pipes I've seen!
Good luck!

Hmmm...seems familiar Dan .....lucky escape I think It was the wheels Jon, and the tidy looking exterior. Not the dogs dinner interior This is the most expensive car I never bought.... £250 cost of travel to and from Swansea £250 show in London compensation for the wife for dragging her halfway across the UK for a complete waste of time. Seeing the photo's of the rust...priceless!

Jason,
I believe this was the car I viewed back in October...it was advertised on PH and after a number of long discussions with the owner about how good the car was...I took the decision to travel from Crawley to buy the car..the plan being to drive it back....
Needless to say I didn't buy the car...not as described has never been so true.....I hope you paid significantly less than it was advertised for...good luck with your project

From memory, I think it was £1500....I didn't expect too much as I was after a rolling restoration.......however when you turn up to buy a car...you at least expect the vendor to be there rather than leaving it with his wife.. ...oh and that the car would at least have legal tyres with a decent amount of pressure...and the battery to have some life....when I eventually managed to get it started, it was chucking large amounts of water out of the exhaust and had very little coolant in the expansion tank. The dash was interesting with the centre console being a lovely sticky mess and the interior smelt of wet dog......apart from that it was ok body wise (shot blasted bonnet excepted - never seen so many stone chips).....and the slam panel...I put my finger through it oh and the rad was leaking .....not quite as described

right. so the parts list to get this badger running again.
all brackets need sanding and metal plating as they are shagged
all belts. changing it to non aircon for ease of working on it. i am tired of removing the aircon pump everytime i work on my coupes.(like my space) should have bought a diesel golf. turbo- 360 bearings radiator-valeo coolants hoses-viper boost hoses- fixed 5 leaks before i gave up(including flexi) lower radiator cross member-primed and good to go front discs-standard discs battery tray- mint 6 speed tray with cable brackets thermostat temp sensor water pump oil cooler pipes- cooler is fine front bumper-only if its a bargain- steel grey please both battery terminals- both are mashed every hose clip i can get to. new horns
every bolt that i have taken out needs replacing wither because i have had to drill them out or use the moly grips on them. it would be horrible to put any of them back in. including earth connections which were a state. rust proofing the engine bay.
lots of other bits. cant get the bumper off to get the slam panel off as the phillips screws are rusted well and trully.

Bumper off today and apart from snapping the lower rad crossmember in half because the bolts are to rusted. All is well.. towers holding both coolers are surprisingly good nick, hopefull next job is engine mounts then get the cambelt changed and scrub that off to do list. Any cleaning tips for scrubbing an engine clean that's had an oil leak?

Hi..I just got rough with the screws with a pair of water pump pliers, and lots of wd40 to wash rust out as bolts were coming out. There's not a bit of shiny paint on this attrocity lol and everything is very water sensitive right now so can't use a pressure washer.

There's not a bit of shiny paint on this attrocity lol and everything is very water sensitive right now so can't use a pressure washer. I use Gunk/Jizor or similar and a variety of stiff brushes. I have a litre bottle of water...the type with a top similar to a washing up liquid bottle....that allows me to direct a restricted jet of water to dilute the cleaner. I wrap any liquid sensitive companents in a plastic freezer bag sealead with a wire twist and cover any area i want to protect with Copious amounts of rags. With a bit of elbow grease...it works pretty well for me... Jon

I have a coupe in with me now thats on the original:- Radiator Turbo Thermostat CHOD Clutch Cambelt And is on 135K. I have never seen a cambelt in such poor condition. But who says they arent reliable Other than the clutch slipping, the cambelt shredding, the Chod leaking, the turbo smoking, the thermostat sticking open and the radiator leaking all the above are as good as new Ps did you manage to get the PS pump off?

Had an hour today so thought i would put my new manifold studs in. to start things off the other day when i was taking off the exhaust manifold they were brilliant. it is as if they were put on yesterday, undid with ease and not a spot of corrosion to be seen, i just cracked them and then undid them with my fingers. certainly beats some which i have seen. and then i abandoned them as it was going so well and i was getting bored to play with boost pipes. clipped up my guage feed to the max ,, no leak here sir

However now with new job means I can use a computer all night.,. oh well I don't have a problem it being here, it might get moved now and then I can remove the stupid title of rust bucket. Hang on, you asked for a project thread and were going to give me some photo's to show me before I gave you permission. You said you only had access from your phone, to which I said you should be able to host the photo's via a photobucket app. You told me you would get back to me next week, which you didn't and removed yourself from the PM discussion. Nothing like missing some key parts to the story!

Managed to get my cambelt done today. Beatiful day for it. Took me about half an hour.longest part of it was locating a tip X pen to mark the belt up with.. Kaboom I also got all of the rust proofing done aswell giving it all 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of silver and 2 coats of clear, and it all looks great now, Roll on friday when things can start going back into it, Please can a mod change my pics with img popper as my phone is so gay its taken me best part of this evvening to load everything up. This is why I got hot and bothered at the mention of photobucket Begbie Thanks Ps only top and middle pictures work, Today managed to heat proof paint the manifold, and not a lot else. Edit: The reason the 2nd 4th and 5th images don't work is that you have missed the end of the full photobucket link.

New slam panel before refurb these bolts took me half a packet of fags to get undone, using a pair of water pump pliers. pretty tough on the old forearms. lower rad support legs. half way through the refurb, just after i had finished the top coat of clear i decided to kick it over and then try and catch it mid flight, missed! and now there is a hand print, huge smudge mark and a tear in the paint, that is when i finally gave up. i miss my coop new stat and temp sensor finally some holes that arent full of bolt lower support beam fitted more stuff fitted. stupid slam panel. everything is going back in now. picked up new turbo yesterday, oil cooler pipes. , boost hose, coolant hoses, other bits and bobs should be running by friday i hope

before anyone points out my header tank return pipe hiding behind the injectors being wrong. but thats how i want it. that stupid plastic panel clip on thing is gay, as we stand today. everything is waiting on the cast mounting and water rail arriving, guy that i bought it off has gone MIA. so i am just doing silly little jobs to burn the time away. like wrapping the loom, do you have any idea how many cups of tea i had to make my misses whilst she was doing it haha

Because they rub the body work at the front and back and that allows water to touch the shell and create rust.
Hence my car being full of holes and off the road and my house full of more coupé than I thought possible.

so your saying take them off? probably the last thing i would do, are you actually serious? Not permenantly just remove them, remove any rust, underseal them and then put them back on...

Im so bored. i want to get a move on with it. And i cant because an engine mount is taking ages to get to me,. so iv decided to keep her off the road a bit longer than planned, do some extra work, do the clutch, get some new shocks and springs on her, Try and find an intercooler that meets my requirements.
make everything look really nice in the engine bay, and then maybe just about catch onto the end of SPA.

I've been dogged by waiting for various bit 'n' bobs. Reading this thread is like my own blog (see below). Most of the front end done but having to replace the petrol tank due to straps rusted away at the moment. Found loads more rust on subframe and rear suspension on removing bumper to access the tank easier when will it end

no meat at all left on this plate. and it was falling apart this box was quite a pig to get out, here is a few pointers if you are thinking about doing your own clutch. when taking out the drive shafts, the 8 mm allen key bolts, dont bother playing around with an L shape allen key, get down to halfords and buy a 1/2 inch drive allen socket, did the job in 10 minutes where it had taken me half a day to get 3 bolts out. follow the how too or workshop manual and leave the mounts on till the end. buy a rather big lever, crowbar or big fat screw driver to help with the seperations

follow the how too and leave the mounts on till the end.
you need to do that, other wise you can hurt your self!! buy a rather big lever, crowbar or big fat screw driver to help with the seperations
you should be able wiggle but a screw driver/leaver will help!!

It never ran again. No its not. But also it should'nt be. In fairness pal, sympathy for him has gone now from a stunt pulled recently to a member. Also at least this coupe is keeping others on the road..and as far as we know laura's is still running.
