After running 400 bhp and 400lbs/ft of torque @1.2bar on my poor little, maxed-out GT28/71R for the last couple of years, i decided to upgrade to the next size turbo. I bought Eldihno's GT30/71, got Barbz to swap the .64 housing for a .86 and had the old girl mapped today. A couple of tweaks to the fuel and timing maps to synch the new injectors and the results are as follows; 440bhp, 450lbs/ft @1.4bar. Peak power is capped due to the compressor having reached it's limit but the torque is phenominal. I'll run it at this level for a while and maybe look at a 76 compressor in the future. A testament to the efficiency and quality that Barbz has built into this engine. No high boost, no high revs, no drama. I don't know of a similar sized engine that can throw out as much punch and at such mediocre boost levels. Barbz, me ole mucker, you were chuffed tonight when i told you, well i'm still smiling now
This is how it should have come out of Torino!

Thanks all but I think Barbz and John, my DTA man deserve the pats on the back, I'm only here for the ride :-))
Joe it wasn't the turbo, more a possible rings issue but won't know till it goes home to papa for a short visit next week!
I'll pull off some graphs next time I'm out there as it was a late session yesterday and totally forgot to print some off.
I was half expecting the clutch to start slipping but the tyres seem to let go first. Anyone that knows me will know I never launch hard and don't drag my car. It's a pure road car with more low-down grunt than most things out there and have embarrassed quite a few expensive cars when they've wanted to 'play', and that was at 400lbs.
In a word, brutal.
This is how it should have come out of Torino!

Nice results Rob. How do you find the extra 40bhp and 50lbs of torque compared with the old turbo?

Nice results Rob. How do you find the extra 40bhp and 50lbs of torque compared with the old turbo? Alexis, it's certainly noticeable, especially the mountain of torque. Slightly laggier than the 28 but that was full boost at just over 3k Nobby, I've been on DTA since before the 2.4. There were software issues initially but all ironed out now. It's certainly an alternative to the Motec and have had 30k miles of faultless running on this set-up

good work Rob think i made 440 at 1.2, but the torque is miles off yours, due to the head size... That must some "pull" from the engine fella ! hope that box is tough !!

is that the new turbo with the 0.86 housing that's at full boost at just over 3k rpm or the gt2871r That was the 2871 and it ran out of puff at 5.5k but had less lag than an n/a Taz, I don't think I'd get that much more headline power even with the 76 housing and probably another 10+ lbs of torque but that wasn't really my goal, I only always ever wanted a big torque curve and I've got that in spades now. Like I said, I'm not hard on the drivetrain and I've been running high torque at very low revs for 30k now and the box has held up really well. Even Joe commented how tight it still felt but yeah, that and the clutch will be the first things to suffer at this level.
This is how it should have come out of Torino!

Joe to be honest I can't remember exactly but it was one of the first 4 paddle clutches that Barbz was fitting in the early days.
Barbz, can you remember?

Yeah Nigel, the shove is immense. It actually produced more power higher up @1.3bar than @1.4 which seems to suggest its passed its efficiency limit and EGTs were getting too high.
Have pegged it back to 1.3 so just under 430brake and around 435lbs
This is how it should have come out of Torino!

76 wheel or even 82 next Behave will you Nazo, the car has always been very good off boost, and you're right, i'll keep it like this for a while. If i wanted top-end power i would go a different route, as it is now, suits me down to the ground.

Nope, that's why my clutch, gearbox and driveshafts are still in one piece. Besides, 80kg of soundproofing on top of the leathered interior wouldn't do much for the figures. It's a GT mile muncher not a racer, quiet, realaxed, it's like driving my house around

you and nigel will be getting about the same when you take dyno discrepencies into account ( i don't know if nigels figures were on the dastek but if so you are likely even closer than the figures suggest) due to the 71 wheel maxing out.. you are both doing well with the figures you have with that size wheel ...going for a bigger one will likely free up more top end so it has to be the 82 rob..go on you know you want to!..

you will no doubt get chance to drive mine if not robs and i am sure you will be impressed.. its not like the 2l at all..i don't know if you have driven one yet but barbz is so quick right from the off that the progression on to boost is so smooth, its incredible! no big kick or as in the quick 2l's i have driven,a bit flat all the way to 3500/4k then bang! which causes real traction issues with coming on boost so hard.. even in second when running the 1.2 bar which was 440(on low dyno)it had grip and didn't start to lose it untill after 6k its up there it starts to spin..third was sublime! it was such a smooth delivery all the way like nothing else i have been in the mate i was with has been in his fair share of fast cars and he hasn't stopped talking about it since.. i know this might seem a bit gushing but it made that type of impression on me and its just fact..try and get a drive in barbz..i just hope mine drives like it
have only been passenger in robs but it is as you say.. you dont have to change gear just a very quick gt car

max rpm is down to what you want to set it to, you always have the option of solid lifters or going the way stichl has.. i will run 7500 on mine ..i think john s ran 8k but it gets too risky imho to run 8k with standard set up..the engine will basically rev as far as you engineer it to but the way these have been built especially the latest ones barbz has done 7500 maybe 7600 maybe safely..he may say a little more but thats about it

Sounds incredible. This was no way a slow car before. Must be a hell of a thing now.
Edit: how's the lag? There seemed like none. Has John mapped a lot of if any of what there was out with advance off boost?

Ciao Barghigiano, long time no see. How are you Paul? It's about time you get yourself along to one of the Scottish meets again, it must be at least 5yrs if not more?

R00 Hi Roo, The headline power isn't that spectacular, there are more powerful cars than mine but it's the 450lbs/ft of torque that more than makes up for it. Yes, a very happy bunny

Was supposed to be going back there today for a bottom end tweak but he's just phoned saying he has a bad ear infection and won't be back at work til friday, so i've provisionally re-booked for then.

Ha ha, looks like good fun but would probably suit a lighter car to get any respectable results, mine's put on quite a few pounds over standard. As well as umpteen rolls of sound deadening, the whole interior has been leathered including rear panels, door cards, pillar covers, console etc. I can see Rob,(KTM)having a bash at that though, his car will be much more suited but i'll keep it in mind if i decide to upgrade the turbo so i can sustain high revs for longer
