1.8 16v

1995 brought new engines and new colours. The newly introduced 1.8 16v engine (which was not available in the UK) offered 130bhp and replaced the 2.0 16v block. It offered greater flexibility than the 2.0 16v and an increased fuel economy. A slightly reduced weight made it the best handler of the range.

The Plus versions no longer appeared in the range, but the larger choice in colour and trim would offer greater possibilities for those interested.

Late 1996, the interior also got an update. Some find it rather strange that it was the Pininfarina designed element that got updated rather than the exterior. But the new central console with analogue clock, new door cards, new handle bars at the B-pillar, radiator grill with rib design and a third brake light went down well with the buyers.

While the full range was updated in 1999, the only model that initially still had non-colour coded sills was the 1.8 16v.
