I used to own a coupe 20v turbo. It only caused me a few problems, but i used to drive it with the window open listening... just in case...

Anyway, to the point. At the moment i have an RX8 its a good car, but for the performance/mpg that you get im struggling to justify it. Also for some strange reason i cant seem to stop looking at coupes! Im trying to save at the moment so im after a car with better mpg. So the RX8 is up for sale.

Problem is i know that i should probably get a diesel for the mpg factor as the coupe isnt going to be a great deal better than the Rexy. However, any frugal car is always going to be boring...

Just after some advice/opinions really.

Cheers

The coupe is better on fuel by a large margin. The coupe will come close to its book mpg while around town, the RX7 simply will not

may be worth going for a n/a?

Sold my RX8 to buy a coop, really glad I did, the RX was costing me £200 per month in petrol (before we had the price-hike), running costs for the coop on the same journeys is less than half that, with more fun! (never got used to the full-on engine braking in the RX, constantly having to correct with throttle, probably why they cost so much to run). Don't get me wrong, I love the RX range (had four), but the petrol costs have always been a bit of a sore point.

I've recently been thinking what I would have as well as/instead of my coop if I needed to do lots of miles (I currently live close to work).

A BMW diesel would be a good car, but a bit too boring & predictable, so I've been thinking a Peugeot 406 coupe diesel & or an Alfa 156 JTD.

That said, if the coop's enough of an improvement in the MPG department then you should go for it - you should be able to get a very good example with RX8 money & still have some change for the inevitable upgrades*! (*repairs wink )

You can have the coop's engine mapped to improve fuel economy as well.

Yea ive seen some of the mapping threads and that does seem to be a good option.

Yea £200 a month seems very familiar for the RX8 i brim the tank for over £60 and get around 200miles, on the motorway i can get around 250. The RX8 can be hard work to drive as well, theres no power before around 6k so you have to be in the top power band to get places. Then of course your down to single figure mpg.

Ive searched around on the threads and it seems that anywhere from 25-35 seems average on the coupe. Thats good considering im sure everyone drives quite spirited.

Think im going to have to somehow justify one over a diesel, shouldnt be that hard once i view one!

If you got anything less than 300....there would be something wrong and on motorways.....around 400.
The coupe is faster than the rx8 although I may be wrong.....and looks 100% better ?
I now fill the coupe up with £63 of unleaded.

Speed wise the coupe is a little faster. Handling wise i prefer the RX8 though, its a little more planted in corners and the rear wheel drive is more predicatable.

Doubling the fuel economy sounds about right, now to just find a coupe!

The Alfa GT looks very dated!!! ( having said that so does the RX) - no offence :-) where as the coupe has a timeless classic look

Get a Brera Diesel a £30k car for around £15K now - that is what I will be doing.

I have had 4 alfas, and although i love my coupe I cant wait to get a Brera (once I have spent a small fortune making my Coupe as mint as possible)!

Brera is a gorgeous car. Thing is im trying to save money at the moment so im after something a wee bit cheaper than 15k! I miss the coupe and i think i will definetly be buying another one within the next month. Just need to find a good one, my last was in good condition but still ended up costing me, i guess thats coupe ownership for you!

Of course, there's always the approach of dropping one of the Fiat group turbo diesels into a coupe body...
