hiya, i have been reading the forum quite alot the past few weeks sinse ive had my 20vt. had it serviced an timing belt done so took it to santapod yesterday and managed 14.4@98mph. is this normal for a standard car?i had spare wheel in and crap tyres etc but wanted to try and improve from here. Also any ideas whats needed to get into high 13s?
Thanks very much
Andy

Yep, pretty much book time that.

High 13's, try lower tyre pressures, stripping the car down and running a Gtec chip will do to get you around a 13.9 (as S1MMA has done on here)

As Begbie says, there's three ways to decrease your quarter times

1) increase power
2) decrease weight
3) increase grip

or preferably, all three

Just bear in mind that if you start down the road of 1) increasing power, 2) comes automatically in the form of a very severly lightened wallet.

Lets put it this way, I have spent well into five figures on my car over four years, and I've just broken into the high twelves with a terminal of about 115mph

Clearly, a quarter time doesn't tell anything like the full story of my modding spree, but I would recommend that you set your sights realistically.

Stripping some of the interior will save you 50+ kg = probbaly enough for a couple of tenths. Running 20psi in the fornt tyres could save you another tenth and running a couple of simple mods like a boost controller at 1.2 bar and a G-Tec chip will easily give you another 30-40bhp and another couple of tenths on the quarter.

So - a high 13 for less than £100.

thanks for fast reply, dont fancy stripping it really as i like the interior but raising the boost sounds good. is it ok to run that chip on a standard car? or could i just turn the boost up to 1.2bar with manual/electronic controler? im assuming my engine is healthy if it can produce book time with 76k on the clock
Thanks again
Andy

don't assume your car is running ok, get a health check first including a compression test before modding!

you would be best raising the boost with a gtec1 chip as it adjusts the fuelling! \:\)

Run less than half a tank, will save you about 30kg!

Don't be a muppet - fill up at the Forth Road bridge and then on the way home \:\)

Last thing you want to do is run dry or get fuel surge / stavation...

If its quiet, more than enough runs to break your car 3 times over ;\)

Remember 1/4m isn't exactly kind to the transmission. Also check your oil and water levels before racing.

Be careful with slicks - if you don't have the power/tranny capable of getting some heat into them (see Mavrics 11.9 run for evidence of how much power etc.. you need to do this) then they may actually be worse than using normal road tyres. The optimum launch on the 1/4 strip actually includes some slight wheelspin, and you have to be careful you don't bog the car down off the line.

Trying to spin up a set of slicks at the pod with a standard clutch may be the last thing that clutch does. I'd recommend throwing out the spare wheel and taking the back seats out (the backrests just clip in (2 bolts on one side)) and the rear bench is only 2 bolts, so thats some weight saving for zero effort, stripping the whole car out is only for those who are committed, no need to go that far if you're just doing it for fun.

As a guide, standard cars usually are between 14.4 and 14.7, chipped cars running 1.2 bar boost (approx 250bhp) are between 13.9 and 14.2, and 300bhp cars run between 13.2 and 13.6. It's all in the launch though, try to get as close to a 2.2s 60ft time, or under if you can. 2.2s in a FWD car is considered to be a good launch.

Sideways a LOT

I was happy to see the times, i'm putting a 20vt in my bravo at the minute, would be pleased with low 14's/high 13's till my turbo and boost controller go on.
