It's really difficult to get a car under 25 years old into the US permanently.
The Coupe doesn't conform to the DOT bumper standards and impact tests, so you'd need to modify them, probably a bespoke modification (£££ to ensure it passes the test).
You would also need to re-arrange the light clusters, probably involving adding some further ones on the sides of the car at least at the back:
"Both the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advise that although a nonconforming car may be conditionally admitted, the modifications required to bring it into compliance may be so extensive and costly that it may be impractical and even impossible to achieve such compliance. Moreover, some vehicle models are prohibited from importation. It is highly recommended that these prohibitions and modifications be investigated before a vehicle is purchased for importation."
This is why the first Focus to be sold in the States had the big bumpers (and also older E30 BMW 3-series) and the latest Elise had to have different bumpers and extra lights fitted before it was complient.
If you are a non-resident, you can import your car for up to a year without these changes, but after a year it has to leave the country again, if it doesn't it gets impounded and crushed.
You do see the odd car on foreign plates around the States, especially on the East Coast (a loud Cerbera on UK plates driving down Miami Beach was especially
), but to be honest if there was one thing I learnt when living in the States it was that the bureaucracy there is terrible and I sincerely wouldn't bother trying.
