The 124 Spider was aimed largely at an older, more discerning (lazy?) clientelle, and being sold in the US as well, and being based on the MX5 ND...it was available in auto as well as manual (even on the margibally "hotter" Abarth version. There were a lot of unsold autos in the UK in the early years, whilst in the US it was hard to find any manuals...

I suspect physically it would fit, the electrical aspect would be a challenge as i know that there are all sorts of integrations with doors, position switches, brake switches, TPS, then some type of dash integration as well. With anything, with enough time money and skill it could be done, but it probably wouldn't be worth doing!
