Unbelievably it was ten years on the 15th of Sept that Colin died in the helicopter crash.
My all time favourite rally driver, he had the ability to get in or on anything mechanical and get the maximum mph out of it.
Although he had been out of the Wrc scene for some time, I always associated it with him (and Richard Burns) and it's never been as thrilling since he (they) left it.
My favourite clip of Colin involves my favourite rally car.
Watch the youtube clip here
There's a big moment at 1.30, and after they finish the stage Nicky Grist replays the moment.
I love seeing Colin at work behind the wheel.
A master of his sport.
There's an Autosport article on his ten best rally cars and events here .

Rally In Peace, Mr McRae

Excellent stuff, thank you

Curiously was watching the WRC on tv last night and they're proper drivers - brave and skilled going full blast down tracks I'd be scared to do more than 20mph on....nutters all of them, and that attitude was perfectly encapsulated in Colin McRae.

Had the pleasure of watching Colin 1991 and 1992 at the British rally or as it was then "The Lombard RAC rally"
He really drove as nuts as it looks on the videos loved the long weekend stage hopping to see as much of the leaders as possible

Didnt realise its been 10 years what a Legend!

Rallying definitely does not seem the same anymore! also another sport dropped by the BBC for more of the same type TV viewing that bores me senseless!

R.I.P.

To be fair he didn't just die in a helicopter crash. He was the pilot, who wasn't licensed to fly, when the chopper crashed. I believe the chopper hadn't been maintained as per regulations.

Not trying to distract from his driving achievements, just worth remembering the others who passed away at the same time.

Although strictly true, a little misleading. He had an out of date license and no type rating (You have to be trained on each type of aircraft to fly). To keep your license you need to do a minimum number of hours flying which should be recorded, but if he was flying his own heli locally chances are it was not recorded. (Not that it makes any of it right of course)

He pushed the limits. That's where his success came from.
Ultimately it cost him his life and lives of others.
I'm not forgetting them, just celebrating Colin McRae's life.

I'm happy to have known of him, and miss his presence in the motorsport scene.
No need to bring the negative aspect to the party.

I had a good long think before I posted my comments, and my choice of words, as I thought there might be some reaction. I don't think what I wrote was negative, detracted from his driving skills, or memory of him. Apologies if it was thought otherwise.

Thanks for the reply, SD.
I saw a negative side to your post where others wouldn't .

I'm surrounded by negative folks at work at the moment while I cover for my manager and I think it's rubbing off on me crazy

I now appreciate what you meant smile

Myself and my boy met him just weeks before his death at Goodwood.

He was a true fan favourite and showed his class at Goodwood by taking time with the fans there. Posing for pictures and actually talking to and engaging with the fans, unlike the current world champion of the day who ignored his fans and had an assistant to field autograph hunters.
