I have driven across half of the USA in a Pontiac. Did approximately 2500 miles in 10 days. From Tulsa across to LA, then up to San Fran and across and back down to Tulsa. It was epic

Having driven the Coupe to Venice and Turin on previous trips in the past, this year's European trip to Assen was a mere 1,000 miles (over 2 days, including driving around the track a few times, but sadly not returning via the Nurburgring this time)
Also did around 2,000+ miles in my pre-Coupe days for a West Coast USA trip from San Francisco to Grand Canyon via Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion Park, Las Vegas and Hoover Dam

After reading some of these I think I need to get a bit more creative with my trips. The problem with using the Coupe though is I find something wears out after every trip and needs 'another' trip to the garage...
It wouldn't be half the fun in a Golf though would it? And that's why we do these things.

The prudent coupe driver would speak to a specialist insurer to get a continental breakdown/recovery policy... most of the usual suspects will cheerfully sell you a recovery policy, but you will find out too late that their idea of recovery either does not apply to any vehicle over ten years old, and/or does not recover if the book value of the vehicle is less than the repair/recovery cost. I fully agree about the breakdown cover. In 2007 I did a 2735 mile round trip over 13 days from Ireland to Kitzbuhel via the U.K, Belgium, Nurburgring, Seefeld in Tirol to Kitzbuhel. I'd love to do it again, with more time and get into south Italy. When I get a full restoration on the car.... Luckily I had called into Paul and Rob to get a few jobs done on the way, so the car was in great shape I had taken out the ADAC breakdown cover (thanks Barnacle) which I didn't need, but on the ferry home from Holyhead there was an Irish car on one of their recovery trucks ( a 6 years old Toyota MPV So it was great to see ADAC bringing them home and I had great pride in the Coupé for not missing a beat! The Coupé is a great long distance car. One of my goals was a 110 mph average over the hour on the south part of the Autobahn. My favorite memories of the trip was a lime green Porsche GT3 passing me at 180+ while I was cruising at 120mph One of many petrolhead giggly things that happened on the trip

One of my goals was a 110 mph average over the hour on the south part of the Autobahn. Ten or eleven years ago, I tried a similar trick in the 16NA - an honest hundred miles in an honest hour on the autobahn, including all the 120kmh limits and roadworks. Did it with a minute or two to spare...

Well I won't be driving far this weekend due to the French strike,s.
My weekend has been cancelled at Magny cours watching ced51 racing in the Alfa cup. And it's to late to cancel the hotel so that's 120 euro down the drain.

Yes, the current strikes and fuel blockades are a bit of an issue. I've worked out if, I fill up at Folkstone before boarding the train, then we should just about have enough fuel to get to Lyons la Foret (near Rouen) and back without going near a French petrol pump. As long as I drive economically that is - Calais to Lyons la Foret is 133 miles each way - so should have a spare 50 miles or so in the tank.

Already booked the Eurotunnel crossing months ago and wouldn't get the money back. Looked into going via ferry from Portsmouth but it was about £200 more! I also think the French have been blockading ferry ports so we don't have any choice really.

Last September I drove from Dorset to Dover, across the channel to Dunkirk (on a ferry). From Dunkirk to Ypres in Belgium and then on to Luxembourg before stopping in Germany on the first night. After that we visited Strasbourg before going to Switzerland via the Black Forest. We visited Lichenstein before crossing the alps into Italy and this leg involved five passes through the Alps including the legendary Stelvio and the Umbrail. We headed on into the Dolomites before dropping down into Florence and Pisa. From there we drove across to Monaco on through the Carmague and up to Millau where we crossed Norman Fosters famous bridge. The drive continued on through Limoge to the coast near La Rochelle before heading north again to Ouistreham where we caught the ferry to Poole. Round trip worked out at just under 2500 miles. The only problem was a puncture in Italy (soon sorted). I would say that the coupe is ideal for such a journey and is a real mile-muncher with the proviso that it must have working aircon and I'm fortunate that mine does!

Trust me, aircon is not essential. As long as the windows open... That does depend on the ambient temperature!

Newhaven-Dieppe is a good and cheap route off motorcycle touring in August, was £90 rtn.
