If you are willing to buy yourself a heart rate monitor I can work out your fat burning zone for you.

I'd be interested in hearing what you would recommend for me? I have a HRM and it's logged through my Strava. I'm 36, 5'8, you know my weight and my average HR is around 160bpm with a peak being high around 185 - 189bpm (generally when I've just got to the top of the hill on the bike). Commute is generally 30 mins / 8 miles in the morning and then the same in the evening

Begbie, exercising at between 94 and 112 BPM (zone 1 of 5) you would burn about 150 cals of fat in 30 mins out of at total of around 185 cals. At 148 - 167 (zone 4 of 5) you'd burn maybe 190 cals of fat out of a total 340 in 30 mins.

For you maybe working hard or otherwise doesn't matter, as most of the additional to the fat cals comes from carbs (presumably those within your system), but you could say that if you have the time its better do to the ride slowly than quickly.

However, the point I want to make in this thread is that you sometimes see people who carry a bit of weight really struggling to do some exercise - maybe because they see the fitter people bounding along and think that's how it should be done and what they need to do. I believe that those people would be best served exercising at a significantly lower heart rate (but with longer periods of exercise - like an hour plus regularly). That has to be more sustainable than thrashing yourself and feeling terrible (but still performing fairly poorly on a relative basis and not looking great when they do it), which must all be pretty demoralising - plus they are burning nearly as much fat at the lower heart rates.

Good effort rush. Nearly half a stone since the start of the Year

make sure you do something to celebrate when you get to the half stone mark that does not mean chowing down on a massive bar of dairy milk though

What was really annoying was Saturday morning, weighed myself and saw 12st 2, couldn't believe it. Then the evening happened. Went out for a friends birthday, only 3 pints, but the kebab shop called, ended up with a chicken shish (the healthiest thing possible) and some shared cheesy chips. Weighed myself Sunday morning 12st 6, and the same this morning cry

Good work people.

I know Begbie, it's extremely annoying isn't it. The weight loss is there though. Probably just water and within system food weighing you down.

Keep it up next week Ryan, and good work consolidating Theresa.

Personally my wife has noticed the reduction of the handles I keep around my waist, which can only be a good thing. I'm feeling more sprightly as well and have lost an inch from the waist.

Everyone keep pushing - lets see some safe and sustainable weight loss over the next few weeks. No bad stuff in whatsoever and lots of exercise.

Haha, this reminds me; one of the boys down the club noticed my bigger handles after the Christmas period. He went in and bit them rofl

I can't lose weight without being in a competitive environment. When people you spar (roll) with are getting fitter and better, you soon notice if you're falling behind! Everyone should give martial arts a go. I'd recommend Jiu Jitsu (Gi or NoGi), Judo, submission wrestling over striking arts also. Great for the social aspect, great for fitness and awesome for self defence. Through in the competition aspect and you have the motivation to stick at it. Sodding around in a gym or running along roads never worked for me; it's too boring.

I'm in.

Currently 11.65 stone (74kgs) we have no stone scales here.

I want to reach 11 stone within two weeks but improve shape (waist to lats = V shape). I swim 20 lengths breast stroke each day and do 30 minutes on level 14 on the nordic trainer. No weights due to arm injury.

Let's see how this goes and see if this weight loss will make any difference to that hard to lose flab (not that big) around the waist - man handles. They're not that big but I want none!
