Since I departed company with my first 20VT (R3 FWW) in 2003/4, I’ve had quite a few cars, probably 12-15. Of note would be an S2000, Clio 182, BMW 118d, Octavia vRS (derv) and Mazda 6 MPS. Some I kept for a few years, some for a few months. The only one I though better than good (fantastic in fact) was the 182.

But I’ve finally found a car that makes me feel like the 20VT did, I feel myself wanting to go out for a drive just for the sake of it…

It may look boring to some, but that was the idea. Flashy doesn’t work in my job and most would not know it has a 3.2V6 and 4wd unless I was heavy with the throttle. It sounds utterly fantastic at WOT, and tunnels have new meaning. It’s not quite an Alfa Busso V6, but it’s not far off.

Given that I’m 37 now, I opted for the DSG wink which is excellent. It’s a real Jekyll and Hyde car with this option. You can potter around in D at 800-1000rpm or switch to S and it hold the gears and appears to read your (my) mind. The paddles can be used which provide near-instantaneous gear-changes. Anyone moaning about the box has made the wrong choice for them or has mechanical issues.

Speed-wise, it doesn’t feel massively fast due to the way it delivers the power, but the 3.2 coupled to the DSG makes 60 in 6 seconds or less all day long and 100 by around 15 seconds. Effortless I suppose.

The handling and weight of the car doesn’t necessary make you want to press on (say like a Clio 172 does evil ) but the grip levels and speed it can attain are astonishing. The 345mm front brakes are fantastic and 4wd coupled with DSG means wet roundabouts are easy to negotiate driving

Inside it is comfortably the most well appointed car I’ve owned- heated leather sports seats (wonderful), 6.5” touchscreen Satnav/media unit, Bi-Zenon lights, parking sensors, Bluetooth, auto this that and the other, etc etc etc. A lovely place to be and to my eyes feels like new. The noise levels, quality of the ride and the lack of squeaks and rattles is impressive to me given its age of 5 years and 59,000 miles. It feels like a higher quality product that the 2008 BMW 1 series I had from new.

MPG is better than expected, once warm 23-25 round town and well over 30mpg at over 80mph on the motorway.

Some would question why I chose it over the GTI given its more expensive, heavier, thirstier, more nose heavy and slower down a country lane. The noise, end of. The GTI is fun when pressing on but I would do that once a year on the road so it’s pointless for me. That’s what my Clio 172 track car is for.

Did I mention the noise:

12-15 cars in 10 years! I'm clearly in the wrong job! laugh

That's a lovely car, Jonny. A fantastic engine. Sounds like you might keep this one for a while? laugh

Cheers everyone.

I'm so confident it's a keeper that I bet the wife £500 (one way bet) that I'd keep it past this Christmas. She still doesn't believe me.

Dave- the loss on the last one was rolleyes Though my work colleague has got a very good deal.

Nice car Jonny. I do love the V6 noise - a 6R4 engine noise is my absolute favourite.

Hi again Jonny - agree with everything you have put up - funny that you also mention the 182 - as I handed over the money from the sale of the Coupe to the wife and she ended up buying a Clio Sport for some giggles.

Ive had a few Golfs over the years and apart from the current R32 now the next best was a MK2 16V GTI which was excellent.

Classy colour, that's a rare one for the R32.

I'm really enjoying the car, it just gets better and better. Such a contrast to the track-prepped 172 laugh

Stunning car, I've driven the MK4 and MK5 R32 and was impressed with both! The DSG box is absolutely awesome though. I do feel even the MK4 is still a lovely car though with the best seats I've ever sat in! I may consider one once my Coupe has finally bored me (Doubt that'll happen for a while)

When I was stupidly getting company cars (take the money now) I tried to get one of these when they first released. They were so popular Sough VW couldn't even get one for me to test drive and sniggered when I asked about possible delivery timescales... Great car Jonny, I never got to drive one but have driven the A3 with the same engine and gearbox...I loved the way it dropped down through the gears when in sport mode...very cool!

Cheers guys. Definitely more grown up than the Coop, but it's got a real charm about it.

What drew me to that one is that its got a custom leather interior - already updated the stereo (RNS510 supplied & fitted by 'N13KKF').

Already chewed my first set of brakes - R32 are known to go through the - just need this bloody weather to sort its self out so I can give the brakes calipers a good clean up and change the discs and pads

Well the R32 has gone to a new home. What a fantastic all-round car. No issues and a joy to own. Many don't understand the appeal as it isn't lightening quick given the mpg (I averaged 23mpg, but most of my driving is urban), but it just had something about it for me. I never got tired of the noise it made. Quite a few on the R32 forum have purchased a new Golf R and gone back to the R32 for this reason...

I changed because I wanted something even more grown up rolleyes and also a slightly larger engine laugh I'll post up the new car shortly...

Nope. I'll give you a clue, it's more than 4 litres and it's rather super, charging about.

16VT and X1/9 1500

We must all do our part for the planet.
I unplugged a row of electric cars that nobody was using.

No it's a Jag. A mass produced one, but with an unusual engine for that model, not many made...

It's the 4.2 supercharged XF, called the XF SV8. Essentially a stop-gap model until the XFR came in. 410bhp/414ft-lb. Loving it laugh
