Im going to try to keep this short as possible. Bought my second coop bout a month ago. Test drive went great and i drove it home 400 miles no problems at all. Its had thousants spent on it been really looked after. But after a week or so the fans came on and wouldnt go off. The engine temp wouldnt move at all, so found out thermostat needed replacing. So that was done, i also replaced the temp sensor which didnt solve the fan problem. BUt after that the car temp was fine, the gauge is showing the temp go up to normal and all was good. Then the car one day lost all its coolant, Steam coming out of engine and smoking exhaust. The hose of death split so i then got that replaced with a steel pipe off pro alloy. had the car back the starter motor packed in To be honest it was turning slowly anyway.so thats been replaced and fixed plus the fans are now working correctly must of been the hose of death leaking. But now when the car is cold and has been standing over night coolant is leaking from around the thermostat area. I think the garage havnt tightend something correctly. Its a very very small leak. Now another problem the most ennoying one its cutting out, driving it is fine apart from when you come to a stop, the revs come down to idle and it cuts out. If it doesnt cut out it idles ruff. The airfilter i got is a pipercross one. I found that one of the pipes was loose so i cleaned the maf and re tightend the pipe. But its still doing it. Any ideas? I know about the idle control valve but my bloody luck the screws are worn and i cant unscrew the icv. My luck with this car hasnt started very well.

Jamie

The leak from thermostat is probably no gasket sealer used dought It's loose !

How long was the car ran when CHOD failed ?

I would say you've got a air leak somewhere from when stat was changed a loose or split pipe somewhere ??

If the block wasnt cleaned properly when thermostat was replaced could be leaking due to poor mating surfaces

Didnt run very long water poured out right outside my house. Yeh im out of love too im feeling low now. Just taken off the maf and the idle sensor cleaned both. Still cutting out. Plus water coming out exhaust at this rate its going in the garage and staying there. Think the guy who sold it seen me coming.

To be honest thats what i have been worry8ng about head gasket. But apart from the water in the exhaust there are no 8ther sysptoms of head gasket failiure. No oil mixed with coolant, coolant expansion tank is fine no oil mixed, water level is staying the same, no white milky substance in oil or water. Im pulling my hair out now. Mot ran out today so until this is fixed its not going to pass.

If the water comes out of the exhaust only when the engine is cold I wouldn't worry too much.

One of the products of combustion is water which, on a hot engine, turns to steam and is thus invisible.
When the exhaust system cools any steam within it condenses to water, which together with more steam condensing next time you start from cold produces liquid water from the exhaust.

You say that the coolant level is not going down appreciably despite the known small leak by the thermostat, so the above is a likely reason.

If the head gasket had gone you could expect the coolant level to go down, possibly with the engine oil level rising if the water was getting into an oil way, thence to the sump.

If you have the equipment pressure test the engines compression and water system, this would show where the leak is at the thermostat and give an indication to whether the head gasket is/has failed.

Ok thanks for the help guys. I just discovered the gasket on the icv is perished. Its missing half of it. So i just bought something from halfords where you can make a new gasket. Im hoping thats whats causing the idling and cutting out issues. Il let you know if that solves it.

Cutting out and stalling has been sorted. The paper gasket in the idle control valve was the problem. Iv used instant gasket to fix the problem. Cars not stalling at all now. Still got water out of the exhaust but im hoping more its driven that will go away.
