What's the budget?
I had an xbox360 which I used for the same as yourself, had the red ring of death and thought about a smart TV but it worked out a whole lot cheaper buying a new xbox.

You won't go far wrong if you start your research around the Samsung offerings within your budget. They seem to do very little badly. Then compare with Panasonic, Sony, LG, Philips, and any other special offers at around the same point. You will very quickly get a short list of of models worth checking out in the flesh. A concrete starting point could be: http://www.idealo.co.uk/compare/4302584/samsung-ue55h6470.htmlSupposed to be a very good current all rounder. I have a Samsung UE55ES8000, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but it is hard to buy a really bad Smart TV. You just need a starting point to focus your research on. Tip: buy a Bluray player from another company and you get two different "smart" offerings.

I use xbox for Netflix and Amazon. In fact we use that more than sky these days. The mrs was on about knocking the sky right down to bare minimum.

I'm the same Steve, hardly ever watch sky anymore.
We only have the HD and entertainment plus add on so it isn't too bad.
You can link sky upto your xbox however I think you need sky go but I'm not 100% on that

They were sold out online on the John Lewis website - though they now seem to have upped the price by £50 - seemably due to its popularity!

Fairly extensive review here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2487295,00.asp
Looks like at the moment you are better of with a High End non 4k TV.
For me the black bits are the bits that make the difference.

4K is pointless unless you're sitting extremely close to the TV. You'll get a significantly better picture from a normal HD set at the same price point.

It's also worth noting that the manufacturers have all just agreed to a 4k standard now, so any TV that you currently buy, will not be to the new 4k industry standard.

4K is pointless unless you're sitting extremely close to the TV. You'll get a significantly better picture from a normal HD set at the same price point. Um no actually. 4k has 4 times as many pixels as HD 1080 and it's also 50 full frames per second rather than 25 frames/50 fields. So it has better temporal resolution too, which is especially noticeable on sport. If you're watching normal HD, then the 4k telly isn't inherently any better or worse than a standard HD one. I guess that for a given price, the 4k set might be more cheaply engineered than the HD one, so you probably get what you pay for. But there's more and more 4k content coming along, including Amazon & Netflix so over the next year all the manufacturers will be pushing 4k screens.

OK, so 4K can have a better colour space and potentially a higher framerate for the tiny amount of 4K content that's available, so maybe I should have said "4K is almost completely pointless at the moment unless you're sitting extremely close to the TV." I stand by the claim that you'll get a significantly better picture for 99.99% of available content from a normal HD set at the same price point though, which is even confirmed in the review linked above. eg. a sample of quotes from the review: Performance This would be disappointing for a midrange 1080p television, but mediocre black levels and the corresponding contrast ratios seem to be endemic among 4K LED HDTVs
Mediocre contrast is to be expected in a budget 4K HDTV If you're more concerned about inky blacks, bright highlights, and plenty of detail between them, you should probably stick to a 1080p HDTV for now

Not really sure about Tvs but I have a Samsung 4K monitor attached to one of my Macs and a 1920x1080 attached to another, the 1080 is much nicer to use, the colours on the 4K appear to bright and washed out.
