Hi i was just wondering how many miles a well maintained 16vt should do before it needs a rebuild and how much would a rebuild set you back . Also how hard is it to rebuild an engine im good with my hands and i have a clean workspace to work in

Hi. Broadly speaking, about 130,000 miles. A rebuild to factory spec will cost about £1000 in total, if you're building it yourself.

It's absolutely crucial to measure EVERYTHING accurately! You'll need about 3 different sizes of micrometer to measure up to 85mm, vernier callipers, dial bore gauge, feeler gauges.

You'll also need a good machine shop who can skim heads/blocks and rebore as necessary.

It's not exceptionally difficult if you've got mechanical sympathy. But you have to be absolutely anal with cleanliness and taking measurements. Measure 5 times, torque twice, cut once!

Parts and sundries for these engines are quite expensive compared to a lot of other engines, so you really don't want to have to do replace anything twice.
