I was at JohnnyBravoTurbo's garage today having a few jobs done.

Whilst under the car we noticed the Aux belt had started to shred, as shown in these pics;

click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge

These "shreds" could quite easily have tangled with the cambelt, had the modified pulley not been there. This would have resulted in catastrophic failure!

On closer inspection of the belt, after it was removed, it was clear to see heat damage, caused by the pulley spinning inside the belt.

This car is not used too often, mostly for trackdays to be honest.

The Aux belt has only been on the car for about 10 MONTHS! - Check yours today

Incorrectly tensioned belt or failing bearings in a tensioner or one of the pumps? Need to find out where the heat is coming from Matt.

The belt was tight like tiger. We think the heat is coming from the pulley spinning within the belt, due to loads of powahhhhhhhhh and quite an aggressive driving style.

Good to see that it has saved your engine. I'm doing a belt change soon, does JBT still sell these modified pullies?

Yes, they are manufactured in house. Paid for itself 10 times over now by saving another engine swap.

Nice that its finally proven to work.

Although i did go against Matts advice to let it shred to prove it 100%.

These belts have to be very tight or they will do what has happened above.
Its spun the pulley so fast that the belt couldn't grip it.
Usually caused by high revving in lower gears.

Keep your eye on this one though as if it happens again we will have to investigate further.

Hopefully the other issues cured now too matey.

We think it was the hose of death,
But we cant be sure.Although we have seen a lot of difference before and after in the behaviour of the system.

If you had shown up for work then you wouldve known james laugh

Wouldve been interesting to see this develop.
But i think what was here wouldve been more than enough to have gone in the belt.

And lets not forget Matts car was the prototype and the reason for putting these into production.

Nah, that's not a test... you need to be doing 6000rpms @ 70mph!! Tell you what, I'll cut a couple of nicks in your belt John tomorrow and see if I can give you some proper feedback wink

just had the belt checked and its come back as the following.

''Belt damage caused by excessive run out''

So theres apparently an issue with a roller or tensioner

wouldntve thought it would take a year to develop like this but hey.
Looks like we may need to have this car back and recheck.

What does excessive run out mean?

I think it means the belt is going around a tensioner or pulley that is (Has a rotation that is) elliptical. This makes the tension on the belt change.

Yeah it means that one of the pulleys under load or in situ isnt running true allowing the belt to contact with the outer ridge.
As this is the second belt its shredded i think its best we swap the pulleys and measure run-out.

Lasted near a year so its not excessive at all.

luckily this time you got away with it.
