he may have had a "manual" reading taken, it's worth knowing though. also, although low oil pressure can be bad it isn't necessarily so wink

How low is it when ticking over and then reving it up ?
If he is getting a reading off the gauge and it is fluctuating when he revs.....would there really be something wrong with the gauge ?
Sounds more probable the sender I would have thought....which means......

Until you contact him dont go jumping to conclusions. I think Rog (poweritalia) fitted the engine (confirm that with him), and he isn't likely to go and fit a knackered engine.

Its a vinci grey LE, they dont often come up for sale. I would wait until you have more info from the owner, you might find that Rog has told him that the oil pressure is under reading in which case you cant really get much more reassurance.

So to reiterate, vinci LE's dont often come up for sale, 3k is still a reasonable price to pay, I sold my one with a lot higher mileage and a portafino bonnet for not much less.

If in doubt, avoid speculation and buy something else.

If he has tried contacting him with no reply,I think it is human nature to think something is a miss especially when money could be involved.
Also, nobody said Rog would fit a knackered engine......did not even know he fitted it but there may be other threads and posts I have missed.....just my 2p worth.

from the few conversations i have had with rog and being aware of his knowledge and experience i am certain that if he sourced and fitted a motor,it would be proper...it would be one i would happily buy... i would ask him (rog)what the issue was for peace of mind though before any more speculation

i wasnt questioning the workmanship of rog, i was just saying that him not answering the questions is a little worrying.

i havent jumped to any conclusions....i said in an earlier post that he might not have internet access,

in my opinion the whole point of this forum is to voice these concerns so that others can advise. i do appreciate what your saying about the rarity of the vinci grey LE...especially at my budget level

I was only trying to give some balance to this thread. I felt that you were jumping to conclusions and just wanted to give some balance.

Maybe he has a life outside the forum. You are speculating that the engine has a problem but he has said that the oil pressure under reads by .5 bar what if he told you that and the oil pressure was 2.5 bar on hot idle. Not so bad now. 99% of the time a dishonest wont mention anything is wrong.

To me it sounds as though you dont have enough money to cover the very possible reality that the car is going to cost you money. maintenance alone might come to £500, it might come to £2000 and if you are buying at the top of your budget with no contingency you should be looking at something cheaper or a normally aspirated car (or a honda laugh )

I think my budget of £3k is plenty for a 20VT which is what my aim is.....I certainly dont think it hurts for me to look at the possibility of an LE.

Also £3k is my purchase budget...I have ran 2 16VT's in my life with no problem maintaining them.

All I'm trying to do is make sure if I do stretch my budget I dont buy something that ends up being a money pit. If I buy an LE for £3k that needs money thrown at it that's fine, I just want to make sure I am as prepared as possible for those costs.

I dont think you should be making assumptions on peoples financial circumstances.

i think that's a fair point - but i also don't think it's helpful to make speculative comments on the possible state of a car no-one's been to see as SB intimates. there could be a few reasons why the oil pressure is 0.5 bar low but he states it's the gauge. we have no reason to assume he's wrong, or is misleading people on this.

ahh dont you just love a healthy debate...i dont think you can get past the fact that low oil pressure reading is a concern..i don't see a problem in expressing that, as i was concerned also.. it just needs investigating..i have to say also though that no response in over a week when you have something for sale..leads one (human nature being as it is) to wonder/suspect a possible problem may exist but as mentioned before now we are aware rog has recently fitted it, it swings back in favour of something simple..it's probably best to ask rog if the owner is not forthcoming..or busy or even on holiday?...i do think though that its all gravy anyway

i expect it's worth knowing WHY the oil pressure is down but he's already said why - the gauge is faulty....

on a related issue, a very respected coop specialist told me he wouldn't be overly concerned unless and until oil pressure was below 1 bar. think about this, if your car had no oil gauge where would your paranoia take you then... laugh

It was late last night when I posted my last post and I was a little put out by Sugerbear's comments.

I would like to re-iterate that I am not suggesting that Alistair's assessment of the faulty gauge is wrong and I am certainly not suggesting that Rog would have fitted anything less than a perfect engine, I was simply trying to get confirmation from Alistair how he knew that the gauge was faulty....i.e. if he had been to see someone like Rog who had confirmed that the oil pressure was fine so it simply needs a new gauge. If he was to come back to me and say "The engine is new and it drives fine so I'm assuming its just the gauge"......then you need to be a bit more cautious.

If someone mis-reads your intentions in a post you have made, once you have explained what you really meant, they should stay off the thread unless they have useful input for other users.

dont take it to heart mate ...i learnt quickly that you need a thick skin to say what your thinking on here but don't let anyone change the way you express your self or your right to say what you think ..if people get a bit uppitty or pompous let there problem or attitude stay with them..if you let it in you will either stop using the forum or end up with a load of argumental threads..like i say thick skin! i say what i like now.. bizaar..and out there some of my threads are but i find it amusing when some pompous stiff gets all pious over your thoughts on a car..keep a sense of humour.. and perspective.. there is so much knowledge and information you can access and real helpful people/experts that it pays to stick with it..be light hearted about it all and take the piss in your own way ..when i first discovered the forum i wanted to know everything i could and i like to look at everything in as much detail and find as much out about something as i can especially if i am wanting to do something with or on the car..so i tend to get on peoples nerves with the constant questions but i care not as i know loads more now about the cars than before..you will mainly find its the experts that are short with you and the guys with the real knowledge as they have heard seen and been asked the things newcomers want to know time and again and human nature being what it is they get tired of it and some become short/kurt in attitude..there are some though that have patience and possibly remember a time when they new nothing and had to ask what now seem like silly questions..as i said before.. its all gravy man
proccy give the newer guy a break:D no one thinks for a minute anything is untoward just wanting to know why and has he tried another guage and how does he know its only that etc ..just normal stuff you would want to know if you were thinking of parting with money..i trade in large commercials and if i took the word of everyone that told me it only **** i would be poor!
djmobi..i caused a bit of a do when i first came on the forum and asked for a cheap but not rubbish 20vt i got all sorts of neg about not knowing what i was doing and its people like me that this that and the other...anyway i wanted a solid base to put together the type of car i wanted which up to now has cost nearly 4k on top of purchase price and by the time i am finished and forged it will be more like 7k but no one new what i was doing ..they just thought i was some nob that wanted a sorted car for peanuts...they had some of it right but i didnt expect a sorted car for peanuts laugh as i say dont take it too serious its all gravy man

cheers KTM....I know the majority of people on hear are cool. Despite my lack of mechanical knowledge I have actually been a member for 5 years, but as I havent had a coop for the last 2 years I am having to re-learn things a little.

I wont let one person ruin the forum for me. Good luck with your coop...sounds like its going be a proper beast when your done (Not that these kind of things are ever done).

P.S.apart from the sugerbear comment everyone was really helpful on this thread.....including proccy (it was a bitchy, toys out of the pram type comment that I posted after sugerbear got my goat up)
