My wife's V60 (2 litre 20v turbo smile but a diesel frown ) cam belt has decided to jump a few teeth and cause head damage cry It happened when my wife was only 1/4 mile from home, pulling out at a junction, changing from 1st to 2nd (presumably at low revs) when the engine cut out and would not restart.

Unfortunately I am working away from home for a few weeks and only managed to get the car towed home first, then to the local garage (with immense thanks to jonnyboy54321 thumb ) and they say that the valves are maybe OK but one or more camshafts and/or camshaft bearing surfaces may be damaged, and have recommended a complete new head. This was after they ascertained that the cam belt tensioner and other belts were fine, put the belt back and started the engine up but it was clearly not running properly.

This causes me grief on a number of levels:
1. It's hard for me to understand exactly what has happened and which bits *need* to be replaced
2. Even if repaired, I don't know why it happened, and how to be sure it won't happen again
3. The cost of a used compete head from a scrappy and/or refurbed is in the region of £1500-£2000 and there will be maybe £1000 of labour to finish the job, total is more than half the value of the car

I have only enquired using the normal scrappy "agents" and haven't contacted A1 in Wokingham for example to see if they have a donor vehicle I could remove the head from myself (when back in the UK). I could join some Volvo forums to seek advice and a replacement head I suppose?

So I'm wondering what to so. For that cost for just the head, it might be worth sourcing a complete engine for not much more, but I guess a lot more hassle/cost to swap over. Or I could recover the car back home and strip the head myself, replacing only the bits that need replacing, but the only engines I've ever done that on are '60s and 70's Fiat petrol engines, and could be beyond my capabilities/toolset. I could get the garage to strip the head instead but likely labour costs might exceed parts cost savings. Or sell the car as a non-runner...

Advice/opinions are being sought from this venerable forum...

If you can find a known-good engine, do a straight swap. Far less labour intensive than an engine strip & rebuild (assuming you're having the work done at a garage). If you're doing it yourself on the drive, a replacement head is probably the easier option.

Does the Volvo unit run tappets straight onto the valves via buckets / hydraulic tappets? Most of the Fiat group diesel lumps run a rocker, which is pretty close to sacrificial when a cambelt lets go - simply replace the rockers and fire it up...

If the Volvo lump doesn't have rockers, I would be surprised if a piston hitting a valve would only damage the cam - far more likely that the valve would be damaged long before the cam

How old was the cambelt and who fitted it?

Join a Volvo forum for sure. Why has the belt jumped? Has to be a tensioner issue and the forum will know all about it if it's a regular thing.

From there, much like this forum you should get some decent advice.Even if you rebuild the head.

Is the car worth a few quid Dave? It would be a shame to lose so much selling as a non runner.

Hope it works out ok. Nothing worse than not being there when things like this happen.

Cam belt was replaced (by the same garage) about a year ago, less than 10k miles, IIRC. Water pump and tensioner changed at same time I think. They changed one of the aux belts but not the other (which they said was OK at the time), but the "other" belt started disintegrating a few months later, so was replaced.

When checking what the problem was this time around they commented on "debris" in the belt area so it's possible that the previous aux belt failure left behind some crap which then led to the cam belt jumping...I'm relying on my memory of what the garage told me, but it's making me think that they might not have done such a good job previously, although before that they have replaced the clutch and DMF when the clutch burnt out not long after we bought it. It's now done around 105k miles BTW.

For the extra cost, an engine swap may be the way to go as you say, and then sell the car, my Sportbrake fulfils the family load lugger duty, and then the Mrs can get something more sporty perhaps (hmmm, perhaps not with her propensity for collecting speeding fines rolleyes )

So in the end I sold the car (remotely via WhatsApp when I was in Oman!) with the broken engine, and took a roughly £3k hit, ouch! The engine design is such that the camshafts act on "fingers" that then press down on the valves, and somewhere in there are hydraulic tappets. A lot of that stuff got damaged on the inlet side, including the camshaft itself (score marks on the lobes). Looks like the tensioner failed, but there doesn't seem to be much comeback, it was replaced over a year ago so any "warranty" on parts or labour would have expired. Bummer.

Anyway, we now have a new car, a VW EOS, and a new problem thread to follow... frown

I lost my Alfa 166 in similar way, tensioner fell off. No way would garage accept responsibility and I couldn't be arsed chasing them. I stripped the 166 and sold everything, Fortunately in my case I made more than what the car was worth! Less a few drinks for the farmer whose barn / workshop I used.

That's a good result, but I just couldn't face repairing or breaking, life's getting too short, too much fun to be had with my own cars. The replacement VW EOS for the wife is rather nice though.
