I should of posted last year how this restoration was going, so I will have to do a catch up with this post and update monthly.

I purchased my 1999 20VT back in May last year ( 2015 ) Came with a totally complete history from PDI to the present day in 3 x A4 lever folders, all keys, all the manuals and all working fobs. 4 previous Owners. 1 of which was for 12 years. It was talked about on a few posts on fccuk.org and pistonheads. But posts were negative, But feedback on the Coupe was good after a few chats to the previous and selling ( Speculative ) owner.

Purchased with 3 months MOT, and was shipped from Sunny Cornwall to Wet Ayrshire in Scotland.

Now that I have had it for 9 months and gone through it, I know what needs to be done or what has already been done.

May 2015 :

1. Rear brake discs changed as had seen their day, same applies to the pads. All changed for Mintex discs and pads.
2. Windscreen wipers changed for Aero-Flat design.
3. Windscreen wiper / motor scuttle removed and refurbished. Motor removed and cleaned and greased. Missing pollen filter replaced with new.

June 2015 :

1. Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Spark plugs, fuel filter changed.
2. Screen washer bottle removed and used the pea gravel trick internally to clean the grime off it, like new. Renewed the water pump as performance sucked, purchased a used one on eBay for 99p
3. Rear windscreen wiper and motor removed as no screen wash was getting to the back screen, all gummed up, all cleaned up and now all working.

July 2015 :

1. Both handbrake cables had seen their day, ordered from Alternative Autos and replaced both, as thought it would be a MOT failure.
2. Had a Drivers Airbag fault, tried to clear myself and a friend tried to clear, not having it. Took some advice from the forum, diagnosed as ECU failure. Great I thought, till I posted a Wanted Advert and " Nismo " came to the rescue and sorted me out with a new ECU. Fault cleared and ready for the MOT test.
3. Coupe passed MOT with no advisories, further this Coupe has not had any advisories for past 7 years, so must be a good'un me thinks. Panicking it was going to fail.
4. Decided to replace the rear tyres as the Conti SP3 have been there for 13 years, DOB on tyres was Year 2003, Week 12. Replaced with Nexen N8000, these would be fitted in the Winter on the front and the Falkens to moved to the rear till summer comes again.

August 2015 :

1. Purchased a new Thermostat from Alternative Autos, but not fitted.

September 2015 :

1. Degreased underside of the engine to remove all the grime, so could have look at all the hoses.
2. Ordered new full set of red silicon 4 wire hoses from Italy. Not fitted yet.
3. Suspect my turbocharger is dying, need to investigate.
4. Notice how many screws are missing with my engine under-tray, but cable wraps do the same job and are easier to remove.
5. Inspected the condition of the oil cooler pipes under the denso tape, wow like new. Cleaned and applied new denso tape.

October 2015 :

Nothing Done as more time was spent with the other " German " car in the garage.

November 2015 :

1. Spending a lot of time researching in future spares as want to tackle the timing and aux belts change, in-conjunction with all the hoses being changed, radiator, water pump and thermostat change.
2. Find out the some of the so called specialists are not so special north of the border when it comes to talking about a Coupe, maybe 10 years ago, but not presently.
3. All 4 wheels have been garnet blasted and repainted in stock Fiat silver paint. Look like new again, till I or the Mrs scratches them....

December 2015 :

Nothing done this month except for the Mrs racking up 700 miles, though she mentions turbo boost not so good and injector light comes on when engine cold sometimes.

January 2016 :

1. Turbocharger working, but slowly failing. Looking through history, never has been changed, lasted well for 107,000 miles. Removed and sent after advice on forum to Midland Turbo for a overhaul, returned quickly. Refitted and all purring again.
2. Need to get my act together with having the belts changed..

Will update next month and work out how to load photos.

February 2016 :

1. Stock taking of all spares purchased to date.
2. Had the engine cam cover garnet blasted, cleaned and repainted.
3. Originally was going to do the belts myself, but have chickened out and will ask Continental to do it. Have booked the Coupe in for March to get all the belts, pulleys & water pump changed.
4. Worked on the clutch a bit, but I think its past its best or at least due to fail soon after doing a clutch movement test with engine running. Have got a quote from garage of £340 plus I supply the clutch kit of my choice, seems a fair deal.
5. I know that to work on the coupe over the coming months, I need a lot more space, me thinks is the Sun does not come out this year in Scotland the Dub Cabrio will have to move on to somewhere where the sun does shine.
6. Currently working on the rear springs replacements and bump stops.

March 2016.

1. Had the cam belt, cam sensor, water pump, A/C belt and Power Steering belts and tensioners changed with Gio Gobbi @ Continental in Greenock.

The removed cam belt was in exceptional condition, with very little wear since its last change in 2010. The A/C belt was also exceptional condition, though last changed in 2010, whereas the PS belt was starting to crack in various places, again changed in 2010.

Further Gio has gone right through the Coupe and noted the underside in very good order with no root corrosion of nasty surprises lurking, and only issue he has found is that the clutch issues I am having is due to a leaky clutch slave cylinder mounted on the gearbox housing. Planning on doing the clutch soon anyway, so makes sense to have this changed as well.

April 2016.

1. Clutch changed for the latest Valeo unit from carparts4less. Had problems with the front mount bolts. I managed to shear one of the bolts... Whoops ! But drilled out the stud, heli-coiled and all sorted. Former clutch plate had approx 0.5mm of meat left and the 4 springs within the clutch plate had been rubbing, so the clutch on the whole was about to fail soon.
2. Gearbox oil changed, quite dark brown / black the former was. So have flushed the gearbox twice and now correctly filled with some nice Millers gearbox oil from Opie. Intend on doing another gearbox oil change after 500 miles.
3. Clutch slave cylinder that I thought was giving problems last month, actually was as the clutch pedal before the clutch change was slow to return to its normal position before the change. Got the required quality part from Alternative Autos.
4. Screen washing issues persist, starting to do my head in, must be the pump as all tubing and NRV's have been replaced. I suspect the pump works, but its performance is lacking with any go.
5. Spent 3 hours cleaning the engine bay under-tray for future refitting, managed to fill a 25 litre drum of crud, by using a plaster scraper in removing the layers and layers of it on the engine side of the under-tray. Cleaned with Gunk then high pressure washed, now nice and clean, and so much lighter to lift !!
6. When engine is hot, suspect I have an coolant leak as see steam rising with bonnet open, seems to be coming from bottom of radiator or hose, to be investigated.....

May, June, July & August.

Nothing done except for a service and MOT as my concentration has been focused on my VW Karmann, of which is now sold to another local dubber, thus I can now focus on the Coupe starting from the rear going forwards....

I know, I know....
Have not updated this thread since August 2016.

So here's an update.

Feb 2017 :

1. During last MOT in August 2016, Tester said front brakes were juddering a little, though not an advisory, but just keep an eye on it. The juddering just got worse, I have now fully overhauled the front callipers, replaced the Pads and replaced the Discs. Further have flushed the brake fluid system and replaced the brake fluid and changed all the flexi hoses for good measure as well. I fitted B&B Front Discs with Magneti Marelli Pads.

March 2017 :

1. Replaced the Valeo radiator.
2. Replaced the Thermostat.
3. Replaced all the rubber cooling water hoses for silicon hoses on front and side of engine.
4. Replaced all the hose clips for standard jubiliee clips.
5. De-Gunked the front on the engine / Top & Front side of Gearbox bell housing.
6. Radiator rail totally refurbished.
7. Addressed some front cross member rust staining.
8. All induction air pipework cleaned externally / internally.
9. Air Intercooler cleaned and flushed.
10. Power Steering Fluid changed ( Now Red, instead of Brown ) Dextron 2 used from SCT Lubricants.
11. Ordered a new condenser as per advice from forum member C.C
12. Expansion tank internally cleaned ( Pea Gravel and cold water worked for me )

Still plenty to do as had a ultimatum from missus to get it finished so she can drive it once a week in the summer...

Planned to do in April 2017 :

Replace CHOD at rear of engine and heater hoses.
Replace Cam Cover / Gasket.
Full Service
Repair some superficial damage to front bumper
Repair the broken front grill slats.
Get windscreen washer system working.
2 Tyres replaced.
De-Gunk underside of the engine and remaining gearbox bell housing.
Start the under sealing of the front half of the Coupe.
Look at Exhaust System / Replace the Cat.
