Red Lion Water End Hemel Hempstead Tuesday 30th - 18/05/2006 18:42

Who's up for another meet at the Red Lion , Hemel Hempstead again?

Red Lion Pub

We've had some really good turnouts lately, so be good for usual gossip etc
I must try and tell myself not to order my usual Lamb knuckle and mash!....mmmm...yummy!!

Neil will be along,... maybe with these nice bright evenings, maybe we could meet elsewhere again and have a drive for a half hour on route again?

Neil?

Re: Red Lion Water End Hemel Hempstead Tuesday - 19/05/2006 16:53

For some reason I feel my 270bhp from PTS is optimistic, (not sure why as I have the printouts etc). Also I only really run 1.0 - 1.1bar 97% of the time as I only have the Pace SMIC and am paranoid about cracking/melting pistons/rings etc (I am on engine No.2). Maybe I'm just more used to the speed, or its just the warmer weather but a few run ins against other cars has made me want for more power.

Re: Red Lion Water End Hemel Hempstead Tuesday - 21/05/2006 18:42

I'm up for this, for reasons which appear in the main 'coupe chat' thread: http://www.fiatcoupeclub.org/forum/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=113281&an=0&page=0#Post113281

I have a there'n'back route from the RL which will take about 50 minutes; there's twisties and ten miles of fast dual carriageway and only one speed camera (apart from the one outside the pub )

Are we talking about going through Ashridge, Turn right at bottom and go towards Aylesbury then join the Bypass all the way through to M25, by any chance?

Any objections to my boy joining in again

Other way, Graham...

Water End -> Ivinghoe -> Tring (ish) -> A41 -> Berkhampstead -> Dagnall -> Water End, as a first thought.

Fitting new tyres today so I can actually drive it in the rain to Hemel Super AYC can only save you from so much. The yoko A048's on it were unbelievable in the 5 dry minutes we've had since I bought it, but they're shocking in standing water...

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 30/05/2006 17:26

I'll be leaving W12 probably around 1730-1745, so I hope the M1 will be kind too. I should make it to the Red Lion on time; Anita will be joining us for eats but won't do the run (which means she can blag the big table!)

Run will be an out-and-back, around 40-50 minutes so let's try and leave the place reasonably early, ok? Wigglies, fast A, and DC, but watch for the turning:

7) http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=484945&Y=213075&A=Y&Z=4
this last one on a new dc not shown on the map; then once around the roundabout and backtrack to (if I don't fly past it!):

11) http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=499175&Y=216315&A=Y&Z=4

and then back to the pub. There's one set of cameras - both directions - which we pass twice in a 40mph section of the A4146, plus the cameras right outside the pub.

That was an excellent meet, great attendance, and I must say some of the fastest cross country driving I have driven!

Kevin, you're a nutter , great fun with the EVO's after the meal, Matt and James, more crazy than me!

Matt, thanks for the drive in your FQ-300, fantastic, I was wary of driving a car I'm not used to hard, but those EVO's become your best friend,..superb

and as for James committment, like a Bulldog,..never gives up!!!

good to meet everyone else, and Neil once again everyone was shocked how quickly you hustle that 16v along

Kevin - Karting.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 11:33

LOL I wasn't trying on the DC - I'm too fond of my license - but it is a very tempting bit of road, no?

But that has to be the highest attrition rate ever for a run: eight cars started it, and only *two* managed the whole route - and it might have been only one if that prat had decided to turn across the front of me a second later

Thanks all

Great evening guys thanks. Great roads you chose Neil, good work, very impressed with the x country speed of your 16v.

My poor tyres!

Civic and i are now starting to practice waving through the side windows to one another !!

Nice to meet some new faces. So Ken when are you getting an Evo?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 14:59

'KIN ELL!!!! Basically sums it up

I have had the 'vo extremely sideways in 2nd gear many times, but last night during the convoy had it totally crossed up well into 3rd gear - Doc backed off as he thought I'd lost it . NO WAY sunshine, just keep it nailed and you're ok.

Also enjoyed Joe trying to speak to his wife on the phone mid-second gear powerslide and as for the drive - you're welcome mate, was most amusing - you were so excitable. 'I've GOT to try a launch!'

Very impressed with the evo's straight line capabilities vs. a powerful coupe - they really don't suffer above 100 leptons...

To echo the thoughts of the others, I was busy enjoying my cross country blast when it occurred to me the pace setter was a 'humble' 16v , it really did impress.

Anyway, great to meet you all, had a good meal and a lorra lorra laffs.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 15:35

Sorry, where are my manners?!

Joe - thanks for organising the meet, always a good laugh and that burger was tasty.. when it finally arrived.

Neil - thanks for arranging the route, the bit I managed to keep up with you guys on was very nice and thanks to Graham for showing us an alternative route when we got lost.

James - I couldn't believe how much grip it had and how adjustable it was mid corner. I soooo want one, but will have to wait until i'm earning at least £2.3m so i can afford the petrol and tyre costs! Have you an Matt worked out how much you spent in fuel last night?

Bockers - There's no point in resisting the inevitable.. and many thanks for that DVD. (which has useful coop related files.. unlike the one Kevin lent me the other week.)
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 15:44

Kenno - I have indeed worked out fuel costing.

I did 45 miles there and back and 55 miles on the route including hotlaps later. So a total of 145 miles, to a tankful. Thats £50 or 50 litres approximately.

Which works out at an average of 13 mpg
Posted By: barnacle

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 16:07

13 mpg and here was me a little concerned that my fuel consumption was likely not to make the usual 33mpg this week

Neil

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 16:09

Ps Matt, yes, even 130+ there's nothing really in it, so that goes that old argument , although I did have
Tempest riding side saddle

hehee , I am quite excitable, think I must have a hormone inbalance somewhere! we should meet up again, was going to suggest you drive my car, but it was getting late, but maybe next time, pop down your way maybe?

Keep me updated on karting kev, would be nice to whip you again!

Only issue I had with the MK karts (other than them need to be faster but that goes for everything) was the brakes, you cannot slam them on like a normal kart as it will just spin. look ages for me to get used to that!

Now then!! What's all this tom foolery?! Damn you lot for living in the wrong part of the country If I had bothered to check this thread beforehand I could have made a special trip as it sounded like a great laugh.

So the evo's stuffed the coupés... ah well, I'll put my order in for a taxi next week

not quite

It was an interesting comparison as side by side on the straight me with passenger and Matt on his own there's very little between the cars, even at 130 leptons.

When you can see where you're going , again twist b-roads, very little in it, maybe fractions either way, depending on the skill of the driver.

however, at night, when you can't read the road ahead, I found that if a corner sharpened unexpectedly, then you can just turn in harder with the EVO, the tail comes round, but it keeps you on line, and imprtantly around the corner. If you do that on the limit in the coupe, you end up with difficult to control oversteer, or more likely a lot of understeer which knocks you off line, its these conditions where the EVO shines .

What was amazing though, was just how similar the cars felt, superb mid range acceleration, both very sharp turn in, the EVO having slightly better ride quality!,...those EVO's are a lot of fun, amazing traction, but the sound although powerful is not as nice as the Coupe.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 19:04

Are both the EVO's standard? (Running standard boost etc)? They sound mightly impressive if so. Civic, Mofo, are they both EVO VII and how much did they cost?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 20:06

Mine is a 'standard' EVO VIII FQ300, as imported and sold in the UK by Ralliart - apparently its got 300 lb ft and 301 bhp. Hursty's is an EVO VII but simply decatted, so is probably running JUST over 300 bhp and similar torque. Side by side there is bugger all in it, down to who puts their foot down 1st

Mine is probably worth just over 15k. Hursty can tell you about his at his leisure.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 20:41

If you're at 300 and the Doc is at 320, that really does kill all the old 4wd transmission losses theories then, if he couldn't really make any ground upto 130.

Of course against a sprint blue one would have been different. Interestingly, my figures are virtually exactly the same as yours Matt (302 bhp / 307 lb) Maybe a drag down the A3 one night to see who gains or loses Although I guess you have a weight advantage over me, as you're skinny, so you can carry some sand as well

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 21:19

I'd say if I didnt have a passenger then there would be an advantage to the Coupe, as with a passenger there's nought all in it.

I raced that remapped Scooby WR1 a few weeks back, and a good few car lengths by 130 or so, and that one had a verified 350bhp.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 21:27

Must have a stretched throttle cable eh Joe I think you should get your evo on the rollers Matt as you could well have a bit more juice When you think for 300bhp you would have around 225-235bhp @ the wheels, coupled with the aerodynamics of a concrete slab, I would have thought Joe's coupé would be whizzing by on the straightaway.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 21:37

Indeed, I think I had well over 280@ wheels at the last time, but then we never did get to race mano de mano, without passengers

Still lots of fun, shame you live so far away Flea, you would have enjoyed it

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 21:50

Flea - aerodynamics are good mate - hence 'limited' top speed of 157 leptons.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 21:57

Matt, once I remap and get some official figures, we should do some unofficial speed testing again, and James with whatever he has next, put some of the 4wd vs 2wd myths/debates to rest

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 31/05/2006 22:00

Just got in from work.

What a meet.

Great turn out. On the run I hung back for Bockers and Kenno to catch up . Didn't catch up with others as went different route.

Neil, that arsehole was too close for comfort. I was already breaking

Not bad route in the end guys. Hitting some mad speeds through Ashridge Just need to sort out the damping a bit now

Bockers, You seemed to be holding your own with me and Ken. Not bad for standard

Great to see everyone. Must do it again before the summer ends

Oh and a big thank you to everyone for again making my Stuart welcome. He was a little scared but still loved the evening

Joe, he thought my driving was fast enough so I don't think he'll go in yours

OK, concrete slab probably overstated it somewhat Looking at the later evo's I can see what you mean about them being pretty aerodynamic.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 01/06/2006 00:26

What the mofo my fuel consumption was stupidly ridiculous too bloody turbos

I think my coup which is slightly modded was very evenly matched against James EVO when we did our side by side tests - nothing really in it. Infact the M3 with one up seemed/felt quicker compared to my coup

Mr Testosterone mode: DB you didnt beat me last time as with Doc Frag and others from the forum I open a can of whop a33 everytime at karting ....err except for that last time with hurtsy and civic but theyre both skinny feckers

Right keep your eyes open for karting thread.....

In the right gear at the right revs a modded coop would probably keep up with a std (de-catted) Evo. However where the Evo excells is at lower revs, for eg in 4th at 40-50mph the coop would be a long way behind before it even got into its stride.
As for handling DocFrags coupe is the best around but i don't know how hard you were pushing last night, but the Evo's had a lot lot more in reserve. An Evo 7/8 Fq300 driven by the Stig around the TG test track would be seconds quicker than even DocFrags coupe i would say.

Still i drove my coop to the Lake district at the weekend and i still love it. It sounds much better

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 01/06/2006 02:58

Hey you mofo!!

I think you're right there James.

Last night, I wasnt pushing to the limit, around country roads with the Coupe , you can only run to 90%, but beyond that its a test of faith. If you can see the road ahead, then you can push harder, but round roads I don't know, even when the road was clear, nope not pushing to the limit, but that would also apply to you James as well. So that's why we all kept with each other.

But the EVO, it seems to be able to let you run beyond 90%, it always wants to help you out, and keep you going round the corner , keep you on line!

I've raced on road and track many Scoobys and EVO's, and not many of them are driven by guys that really know how to drive their cars, unlike Matt and James the sideway boys!, so its easy to keep up.

But when these 4wd cars are driven well, you can't match them, with slow corners especially, the EVO's just slip the back out, and then they are already pointing in the right direction to exit the corner whilst you are still balancing the Coupe, still negotiating the turn.
They then gain a car length or so before you can get going again

Round faster corners, then the difference is not so noticeable, as to throw the car into a 4wheel drift does not necessarily gain you as much, although its a lot of fun I would have thought!

We need a track day to sort this out! Joes coupe is by far the best handling coupe I've ever expereinced but I dont think its anywhere near an Evo being well driven. James and Matt havent had them long as arent fully commited in the higher speed corners yet. remember the evo is a rally bred, all conquering chassis and 4wd system, the coupe is based on a tipo!

Kevin sort karting, I will again whip you! Last time it went.....

Civic
Hurstymofo
Rog
Me
You (big homo)
SA

Remember I have a weight penality on all of you mofos. Kevin you will never beat me at karting, I remember having to try and teach you how to drive at cadwell!!

Shabba, karting is in hand, we are speaking to daytona about dates and times, will probably go for a grand Prix event, should get something up on the board this weekend

We can grab Neil to organise a nice run before hand

I'm going to have to go on a diet for karting

I beg to differ.. Hursty was in chase of Civic and the Evo was squealing like a pig at 100 leptons.. or was that you in the back Kevin??

Ermmm I dont think so mofo I easily beat you - those skinny feckers only beat me because I had a big breakfast whilst they were throwing up / nursing hangovers

Also if you gave up the roids you wouldnt bulk up all that muscle and perhaps get a little faster. Didnt you break 2 karts?

James my Taxi business is going well thanks you mofo 2 evos have joined my fleet

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 01/06/2006 19:35

You beat me overall becuase my kart broke and I got stuck in the pits! You NEVER beat my laptime though.

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 01/06/2006 19:52

Fair point you did beat my laptime, but I passed you on more than one occassion. Its overall that counts not on one lap.

Plus you broke the kart by not staying on the tarmac

Better luck next time

Dont know if its been mentioned or infact you spotted it doc but kev was on three wheels round one of the round-abouts!!!!!!!

When we were behind him, i saw his rear right lift off the ground... he must have been seriously pushing it!!!

Any comments Kev?

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 02/06/2006 20:10

kev, pushing it in a corner? Cant be right!! Seriously, you had to see how slow he was at cadwell, he even had his stereo on and was following the track via his sat nav!

Sounds like you lot had fun - I would have like to come along too but I was busy supping £10 bottles of Beer in Venice

Ooohhhh karting. I thought I came 3rd when we went last time? And the time before at Milton Keynes I got a puncture on my 'out' lap and spun off in spectacular fashion.

And more importantly - did you have the Lamb again Doc?

Shabba you only drive 22 miles a year hence why nothing gets a chance to blow up.

Modded coups can be very safe too - infact IMO safer in some aspects.

Hi Flea,

aww that's a shame, I can't do this Friday, would have loved a blast!

Just cleaned the Ramair filter, and put the proper 50:50 methanol/water mix (instead of just water ), omg! she's flying again , I can't believe how much difference cleaning the filter does!, I won't leave it 2 1/2 yrs again

Re: Red Lion 730 pm - 06/06/2006 17:25

I think I sorted myself out on the lady front nicely on sat night thank you very much!

The coupe is great for what it is, I just dont see the point in trying to make it more as its not worth the results. I will have my coupe until it dies, nothing can replace it under £15k for me.
