If you sort a meet out far enough in advance go to the nearest travel lodge and book online and maybe get a good sized room between 4 of you for £15 or £25

Well there seems to be a fair bit of interest, Kirkstone Pass (A592) was one idea I had but it can become unpassable due to snow sometimes, depends on how much of an adventure people want

(that would be J40 Penrith then driving down past Ullswater for you Scottish lot)

I've had a scoot about that area before in the coupe. It's pretty nice and good roads for driving.

I'd make an effort to come.

Worked in kendal a couple of years back and the road has some mental fog, one minute everything is clear next you couldnt see a thing for about 30 secs

Was over the Lakes last week, in Keswick for a course.
Had an excellent drive over - there are some absolutely brilliant roads.

I could definitely be up for camping or B&B so we could find a nice pub to have a few pints and a chat on the Saturday night.

I've stopped in the accomodation at this place a few times with the mini club. It's ideal for a group and is just at the start of the climb up Kirkstone Pass.

Your right - unless a date is finalised difficult to plan accomodation. I'd have though somewhere near Penrith would be suitable - A66 into the Lakes and approx 40 mins from the border. The Westmorland Hotel at Tebay does single room at &65 b&b but a discount may be poss if there's a large group staying. Is it too far down though for the Highland Host?

The only thing with this hotel is there's nowhere to go for the screaming lash/curry - unless we all want to pile in for grub at the service area and mix it with the "Highland Sights" Saga tours I'd have thought an hotel in central Penrith is better for pubs/grub but I don't know the area..... How's about a date being fixed to kick off then accomodation to follow?

Hmmm, last time I was in that area, in a choice between Ambleside and Bowness, we plumped for Bowness. Wasn't much doing but they did have beer so all was ok.

Very nice area for a drive about, was torrentially wet when I was there though.

Never had a night out in Penrith but it would make sense for the scottish lot to stay up there, then everyone else can meet up at the hotel in the morning and drive down into the lakes (far nicer than to drive up into the lakes from the south I think) There is also a cool waterfall to stop off and see

I also recommend that EVERYONE should drive the A6 from Kendal to Shap on the way back to Penrith, This road is awesome in a turbo coop (or any other really fast car)

I agree with mitch. If there's going to be a serious turn out - trying to get an hotel to accomodate everyone post Easter will be expensive. I'd have thought a date end March at the latest?

Hi, Depending on the date, due to shifts, it would be great to meet up with you all. Will wait with interest for a date to be agreed upon.

I'm interested and watching this thread but can't say anything much yet given lack of time and date (rough location is fine though as I'm just a quick blast over the A66 away).

depending on when this is i would be interested. If its in feb then unlikely as already doing the scottish meet on the 4th of feb - but might be able to swing it in march.

We go tot bowness on windemere every so often and stay at a great place called fayrer garden - five course dinners!! bring it on! Semm to remember it being fairly quiet in bowness on the night though so perhaps perth is better - dont go to Carlisle - proper scary night out there (apologies to nayone from carlisle - I'm from middlesbrough originally so i know a proper scary night out when i see one!!!)

Well the 15th is a sunday. What night would we want the hotel? I imagined - have a meet, then those that want or need to, stop at the hotel and make our way home the morning after. So a meet on the 15th would be ok for me but not a stop over as i'm in work on the monday.

We could have a meet on the14th (Saturday) and stop over - leaving on the Sunday morning.

Trouble is I just spoke to that hotel and they wont do a single night on the Saturday (they will on the Sunday)

Trouble is the Lakes is tourist mecca and they never have an off season. The only other way of doing it is to book B&B on an individual basis but then we'd end up spread out all over the place and I don't think you'll get B&B for less that 30 quid a head anywhere.

I don't need to stop over really as it's only 2 hours drive but will do so if a few others are up for it.

MrsC2D says we have another email from somewhere that can do it for 95.00 but I don't think we'll find a much cheaper/better hotel though in the area.

Ok, how about this for a route....

Meet at Whoop Hall at 12:00

Head up towards Windermere & pick up the A592

Follow A592 North along the edge of Lake Windermere.

(Could take a detour half way up and get the little car ferry across Windermere, which would look quite cool full of coupes).

Carry on up the A592 up to Kirkstone Pass.

Stop for some food at the pub on the top.

Carry on up the A592 through Patterdale and along the side of Ullswater.

Head off into Keswick for a stop and a look round here cars of the stars museum.

Head back down the A591 to Ambleside.

Down the A593 & A5084 past Conniston Water.

Onto the A590 and back to Whoop Hall.

Nice big loop there taking in the main lakes and some excellent roads. Should take all afternoon with a couple of stops - back to Whoop Hall about 6:00pm?

that sounds brill mate but i have got 151 miles to do first just to get there what i say is we all meet at whoop then head of to a pub near a lake,about a five our ten miler

How cool would the car ferry be

IIRC the car ferry goes from Windermere to Hawkshead. You queue for the ferry and it holds about 20 cars. Hawkshead is a luvverly little town - like stepping back in time

Pag does your route go from Hawkshead around the lake, then onto the Kirkstone pass That would be brill if it did

Car ferry takes about 10mins each way - had it filled with Mini Coopers a couple of times which looked good, back in the days when my mini had wheels & an engine of course.

Just spotted this big meet!!
Coupe long gone .. but will do my best to pop along to see the big line up of coupes..

The Whoop is a nice spot, wont need to stop as I only live 10 minutes up the road and pass it twice a day on the way to work ....
Just be careful as 300 yards before the Whoop as you leave Kirkby lonsdale (devils Bridge) they have just put up two sets of speed cameras within 50 yards of each other .. its within a 40 limit but on long straights so you soon creep above 40!

Devils Bridge (300 yards from whoop) is a big well known meeting place for bikers, saturday should have a few but the Sunday should be heaving, especially if the weathers hot n sunny! parking on one side of the bridge is for bikes only on the sunday? so if your a keen biker also worth a walk down on the sunday? A busy spot during the summer for picnics and swimming...

Kirkstone pass as mentioned is a great road, stop for a cuppa at the 'kirkstone pass inn' along your way!!
Kirstone pass inn when its not a foot deep in snow!!

You wont be stuck for good raods, and this time of year shouldnt be too busy with tourists!
Windermere will be about an hours run from the whoop (traffic dependant) Kirkstone pass only few minutes out of windermere, from there a good run would be to head up along ullswater to pooley bridge, it all depends how much driving you all want to do? from pooley bridge you can blast back down the M6 (Not that I would touch the motorways) back to the whoop if your running out of time? or head west along into Keswick and back round the lakes, or east along the A686 to Alston, middleton on teesdale, Brough, sedbergh, and back to kirkby lonsdlale (Whoop). You would rake up a few miles of good driving roads!

The Whoop may be a few quid but has the leisure complex, restaurant etc with plenty of space for meeting up in the bar?
The link to the travel lodge above is the far side of lancaster? a good hours run from the whoop or the lakes?? Plus its on the M6?? not a great meeting point plus will have no bar?? You would be better staying closer to kendal as the group from the whoop will travel thru Kendal on there way to the lakes!!

Yes Its around 15 miles on the M6, then approx another 10-15 miles on A/B roads depending which way you go?
Either Off at Lancaster (J34) and take the A683 thru Caton, Claughton, Hornby, Melling.
Or off at Carnforth (J35) and take the B6254 through over Kellet, Arkholme, Whittigton.

Half hour if you know where your going :D....

Get some directions hopefully..

Been looking at the route again, so how does this sound?

Whoop Hall to Windermere (A65 --> A590 --> A5074) [23 miles]

Windermere to Kirstone Pass Inn (A592) [7 miles]

Kirkstone Pass to Keswick (A592 --> A5091 --> A66) [23 miles]

Keswick to Ambleside (A591) [17 miles]

Ambleside to Windermere car ferry via Hawkshead (B5286 --> B5285) [11 miles]

Windermere to Whoop Hall (A5074 --> A590 --> A65) [23miles]

Total of 104 miles, which would probably be between 2 to 3 hours driving depending on how busy the roads were.

What's everyones thoughts about stopping off for lunch along the way and possibly going to the Cars of the Stars Museum in Keswick, (not sure how easy it would be for everyone to get parked up in Keswick though?)

Its the Royal hotel at dockray not sure 20 cars 40+people would fit? same prob at the troutbeck inn a few miles further just as we get to the A66.1/2 mile towards Penrith is the Sportsman???.
Its a bit bigger but might be busyer, iv heard of other car clubs meeting here in the past.Or,,, there is two pubs in Threlkeled,A66 just before Keswick?.The Salutation an Horse n farrier, they are 100yrds appart with enough parking?

Kirkstone Pass - is that the one with passing places and a 1:3 gradient If it is then not sure my handbreak is currently up to the task. Going to replace my cable shortly but doubt if it's going to make much difference......

Not sure why you need the handbrake? Great little road over kirkstone pass, Dont worry the car park at the inn is on the level! No need for passing places as its dual road all the way!!
Last time I was up there I had the pleasure of blasting past a large convoy of mini coopers on the bike! I guess a car club meet somewhere nearby, I could tell some were trying to challenge but with very little overtaking opportunities for cars they had to grin and bear the slow moving traffic

The ferry holds 18 cars, so shouldn't be too much of a wait, and it's £2.50 per car.

Well, plan is to leave Whoop Hall at 12:00 and I guess it should take about 1 hour to get up to the Kirkstone Pass Inn, and then around another 45mins to get to Keswick?

So depending on where you could find to fit us all in, I guess we're going to get there around 1:30 ish. Might be safest to say 2pm for food, just in case they're any delays along the way.

Your meeting at the Whoop on Saturday 14th, but what night/nights are you all staying? Friday night before? or the saturday night? As someone suggested you may all be meeting up agian on the Sunday?

I'll definatly make an appearance at the whoop and glad to give directions if anyone gets lost? also will chip in with any suggestions on the routes. I would say you need to allow plenty of time through the lakes as it can get busy traffic wise?
Lived in/around Kendal for 32 years, but have to admit as I live in the lakes dont explore it as much as I should (fell walking? whats that? ), but i'll do what I can to point you in the right direction, Mitch has mentioned the A6 through Shap which is a good road, leads up to the sportsman but this runs parrallel to the kirkstone pass (cant fit both in), you will get a scenic view of the lakes on Pags route

Its arrive at the whoop on satruday, do our stuff, have some drinks some lunch some dinner then stay over and head back the next day!

I have to say, the ferry can be a very long wait at times, as its a tourist thing rather than a useful service. I think the chance of just turning up and hopping on are extremely slim.

Only because the driving will be far better, not as many caravans and a much faster road. But yes the downside is we will see less lakes, any thoughts?

Yes the Whoop has plenty of room for everyone in the bar/restaurant so no problems that way! Kirkby Lonsdale is only a stones throw away so will be worth a wander down on the saturday night? Always pretty busy but Im sure you'll find something you like!

We're booked now so updating this. Whoop Hall weren't having any single night bookings (although Solas' silver tongue worked and he got in so it may just be me) so I'm now booked in Kirkby Lonsdale right over the heads of Mr and Mrs Pleb .

I rang to book tonight and got the answer that they don't take bookings for only one night from somewhere else other than Whoop Hall so it looks a common policy in the area (be warned). However at least the hotel in question explained that they did this to try and fill up the weekend but accepted single night bookings nearer the time (unlike @rsey pants at Whoop Hall who just said "No, not now, not ever and get off the phone I have things to do so stop bothering me with silly things like offering to help towards paying my wages", his name is Kim by the way for anyone staying there)

We could meet at Scotch corner,a good scenic route would be through Richmond to Wensleydale on to Hawes,A684 and then to Ingleton B6255,A65 to Whoop Hall

The B6255 Hawes to Ingleton is an excellent road!!! Just Brake hard if you see a Blue Scooby parked on the side of the road ;), Patrols that area very frequently! I'll have to watch out for the convoy passing through Ingleton! Not sure yet but if your coming across that way I may shoot accross to scotch corner and follow the convoy to the whoop!

Not saying yours or anyone elses Coupe is, but ive seen a few very nice coupes, with zender kits and the like, and when i ask the owners when servicing like belts were done, i get a shrug of the shoulders or something similar. Too many coupes are geeting modded without proper maintenance care for them.
My car is showing its age with stone chips etc, but the servicing is spot on. i will wait a while longer before it gets modded
