Sorry Freddan;

C&B cams
Full 3" 5-stud exhaust
GT3071R internal WG
External 044 Bosch fuel pump and Walbro 255l used as a primer - with wiring mod
440cc green injectors
Unichip Q mapped by me
3.8fpr, you can never have enough fuel!
Evo FMIC
Waterinjection
Uprated radiatior
Straight mod induction with a Ram air filter
Greddy Profec 'B'
Ported manifold....

And probably other stuff I've forgotten about.

NICE!!!

going to have a look into that fueling system you got going on there!!

so no re-build then.. there is hope for 400bhp then LOL
did cams make a lot of diffenernce?

any chance of an engine pic??

I'm not sure how much of a difference the cams made to be honest as they were fitted along time ago and I never had her on the rollers as often then. ;\)

I'm in the rather lucky position of being able to get custom piping made on site, but I can take some pics whenever I get the chance if that helps any.

Freddan the injectors are actually usually used on VAG cars, and yes still on standard internals.

I'm using a Helix paddle clutch, four point.

not really - at lower boost levels, my power is still climbing as I hit the limiter at 7,200rpm. I could have easily set it to 7,500, but I wanted to play safe.

Any 20VT with forged and balanced internals will be good for over 7k rpm without drama.

Its also great fun to still be pulling really hard as the rev limiter hits - most turbo cars are well past their best by then

the standard head is probably holding you back quite a bit!
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Almost 400bhp - 16/10/2008 20:54

Yes the standard head is probably at its limit, as are my 440cc injectors but the 044 fuel pump is helping a great deal.

The BHP won't kill it, but near on 380 lb/ft of torque will...if I could get it out of 10.5 afr as she comes on boost hard I dare say there is 400 lb/ft available.

Matt, the rev limit is interesting - I was just playing around with it tonight, but as you can see from my graphs there is little need to go above 6.5k at the moment.

Animal is the only way I can describe it on the road.

It's all in the block. ;\)

Maybe if you run a few layers of tape round the block it'll help it hold together. \:D At the very least, it'll help to catch the rods when they decide to make their escape.

Re: Now over 400bhp - 17/10/2008 15:57

it will be interesting to see how the rods hold out - I bent one of my standard rods at about 350lb-ft

It sounded just like a sticky tappet - clicking noise at tickover, at exactly half engine speed - turned out it was the piston rocking in the bore on the exhaust stroke as the small end was slightly bent \:\(

Isn't thre one of our Scandinavian friends running over 400bhp on stock internals?

What on earth is holding these engines together?

Re: Now over 400bhp - 17/10/2008 16:30

I think sparco (before he changed his name to cheasy peas or something like that) is as well IIRC, obviously some can take it and some cant. \:P
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Now over 400bhp - 17/10/2008 16:38

Well - it's not a matter of whether they can take it or not, but rather how long they can take it for. On a well mapped car the pistons may last a while. On a poorly mapped one about 5 mins.

Over 350 lbs / ft we KNOW that standard rods will bend, though there will be slight variences depending on the set of rods that happen to be in the engine. Any slight manufacturing defect and guess what's going to happen. ;\)

I think Matty would be the first to tell you not to expect to run 2+ bar of boost and upwards of 400 bhp and not expect it to eventually go pop.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Now over 400bhp - 27/10/2008 16:57

ok the other thing is what about how the car performs?
matt whats it like to drive? i had a 425 bhp skyline rwd and its got no tracton at all in 1st 2nd and some 3rd so whats it like fwd?
to be fair i am very impressed with the coops traction for fwd indeed :-)
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Now over 400bhp - 27/10/2008 17:07

This has been done to death.

You can FUBAR an engine running 250 bhp if you tune the car wrong. Take a wild guess how long a standard engine and turbo will last at 2 bar.

A worn engine may well pop with only a chip and no other mods.

IF you do it right then up to 350bhp is a general guideline on the standard internals - 350lbs torque on the standard rods. If you want to go for more then dont cry like a girl when it goes bang.

THE END! \:\)
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Now over 400bhp - 27/10/2008 17:13

ok fair play sounds good. what does 350 bhp coop feel like though as its fwd i just imagine a cloud of under steering smoke and a helpless scared driver lol.

Nope - pop over and I'll show you. ;\)
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Now over 400bhp - 27/10/2008 19:12

Over 400bhp isn't the worry, as such, it's the torque that breaks traction - and 'possibly' standard bottom ends...

A Coupé that's set up well* will 'scare' a few things on the track to say the least.

*I am including brakes/suspension here.

I'm not by any means saying that it's OK to run stupid amounts of boost/torque through the standard engine, and if you blow up your car doing so then so be it, but I think the general 'oh you can't go over 350bhp on the standard engine' is there to be played with. ;\)

At 320bhp I get no traction at full boost in 1st gear at all, I have to catch it on part throttle when the boost comes in or it's instant rev limiter stuff and lots of burning rubber. 2nd hangs on in the dry and goes like crazy, in the wet it wheelspins at full boost. 3rd gear is always fine, you'd need more power to spin the wheels in 3rd \:D

I dont think the understeer is that bad, if you hold on tight. \:D

try second gear 3.5K rpm B road, floor it and steer to overtake the car in front. When you're back from the ditch we can discuss it further \:P
Serious, I'm finding my self lifting off just as I get to the opposite lane and booting it again as soon as I'm level with the other car.
Hopefully this will change next week as I'm halfway through the Racelogic installation \:D

That's 36mph in 2nd gear. Why not try to fall back a few lengths and then put your toe down in third gear from 40mph instead? With a GTiR mine flies from these speeds with minimal fuss \:\)

Not really, I dont get any torque steer in a straight line. Just if I decide to boot it whle going round a corner it doesnt want to go round, but it can be forced to. \:P

Re: Now over 400bhp - 28/10/2008 09:37

I must say that I find the coop great for traction and much better than my skylines as they where rwd and quite powerful and to be fair you had to watch every move in it because it was ready to kill you all the time.
Main thing is how a well setup coop would stand against say a Scooby or evo as I am always put off with fwd as I doubt how capable the car is even though I find them much easier to drive on the limit.

As the late great Colin Mcrae would have said;

"If in doubt, go flat out"

Which is exactly what I did at Knockhill, the back end of the Coupé can be very playful! Torque-steer is especially fun changing from third to fourth in the wet beside an Evo... \:D

and that was with only about £450 worth of suspension mods - hardly a money-no-object car ( as many of the TOTB cars were)

My car is set up to be neutral wherever possible. It means a bit of understeer at low speeds, but its VERY predicatable at very high speeds - totally planted.

Once rolling, it would be a pretty quick EVO or Scooby that would trouble me round a track. Sure, I'll get beaten out of hairpins and the like, but once in second gear or higher, I don't have traction issues, regardless of how much power I run.

I'm pretty confident that if I wanted to, I could set the car up to be "pointy" and have it turn in with as much bite as your rally slags. However, with the mileage I do, I don't want it to be hard work to drive, so its set up more as a hard GT car, than a track weapon.

I know it would be quicker if the rear wheels were driven, but not by very much.

well its just i have driven quite a few skylines in my time and handling wise i think a coop could stay with a gtst or maybe a gtt but a gtr i doubt and power wise any skyline with over 450 bhp in a gtst or 500 in a gtr is going to pull away and they are common power outputs now in skylines.
i want to be proved wrong to be fair as i would like the coop to hold its own against them

Re: Now over 400bhp - 29/10/2008 17:00

Re: Now over 400bhp - 29/10/2008 17:03

hum say that to mick with his jun super lemon 2 i have had the pleasure of driving and with a 9.12 and that was last year i am sure he would do a 1/4 with you lol
to be fair though i agree that alot of people have loads of power and no results but i don't want to waste lots of money tuning my coop if i don't see good results.

Depends if your end goal is creating a car that will do a quarter in a set time. It's also very possible you might want to have a car that drives nicely on the road, or is more suited to braking and cornering on a track. ;\)

Re: Now over 400bhp - 29/10/2008 17:12

I believe Mick now runs the Duke Skyline and managed an 8.0 last weekend at Shakespeare County.

My point was, I'm still waiting for a big power "Coupe" to have a go ;\) It's not easy running a fully loaded FWD street car with the same pace over the 1/4 as say... a Ferrari F430, Ford GT, Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 GT2 \:\)

Re: Now over 400bhp - 29/10/2008 21:21

It's not all about power. Gearing, weight and frontal area make a massive difference. from memory a gtr is 1650kg, if it's making 500 bhp thats 330 bhp per ton. it's also got extra power losses through the 4wd system. a coupe weights 1300kg if it's making 400bhp that 325 bhp per ton. Anyway I think you can see what i'm getting at, cheers tim

Re: Now over 400bhp - 30/10/2008 09:36

mick used his jun super lemon everyday and has full interior and street spec.
flea like i said i think your car is amazing and to achive that hats of to you and i really mean that.

we all know i boils down to more than bhp per ton and i don't see many cars keeping with a 500bhp r32 gtr to be fair.

the thing is i have been there done that want a new car/ new challange but at the same time i want a capble car thats going to work well as a very fast road car.

Out with the Greddy, in with the AVCR. I've turned the boost down for now, although I've still to tweak it a bit, I *only* pushed 1.9 bar so I've got a slightly lower* torque figure but I've got a few things planned.

430BHP and rising....

Yup, still standard internals

*Actually it's pretty much the same.

Have you got nothing better to do with your time than continue to torture that poor car?

Re: Now 430bhp - 26/11/2008 21:18

Ach, nah I only worry about things once they happen \:D

I actually did a compression test not long after Knockhill, which was at the end of October, and all cylinders were 11.5bar accross the board.

oh rite well least engine is really healthy for now ;\) . . . .. fairplay to you for having Forged balls instead of internals!

I would love to go in a car running such high boost eg 1.8+ just to see what it feels like when it hits full boost if tht makes sense. \:\)

now its got me thinking what boost shall i get leighton to map mine too. . . \:\?

Matty when i rebuild mine i think maybe you should come down and map it for me? We seem to think along the same lines and your mental mapping will compliment my mental driving!!
