New member on the lookout for a 20vt - 16/02/2016 20:21

Hi, I've been on the forum for a month or so and it's a great source of information.

I hope to get a 20vt soon, just need the right one to come up. I missed out on a Plus this week, it was the first one I have viewed but it had been off the road for a while. I'd like a nice solid car that I can make my own.

Thanks, I'm more used to old BMW's so it's a bit daunting as this will be my first Coupe. This forum helped me with my knowledge and what strikes me is the level of enthusiasm everyone has for the cars.

Welcome. Enjoy the search. If you can, have a look at a few members cars before you buy one.

Hi, welcome and good luck with your quest.
Try and locate a local specialist who can help with tips and even perhaps extend your search radar? thumb

Thanks, those are good points. It would be good to see a few nice ones before I buy. I am hopefully going to view a car in the next week or so, I've had a good chat to the owner and he just wanted to give it a clean before viewing. It looks nice in the photos though.

Ring Motormech or JBT off here, i know for a fact JBT has a couple he'll have available before too long and i totally trust his level of thoroughness and after-sales service as much as his pricing policy.

Welcome.
Do you still have the E34 540?

Re: New member on the lookout for a 20vt - 24/02/2016 16:24

Cheers n3dsd, I do like a nice E30.

I have still got my 540, it's just having a bit of work done on it at the moment. It's nearly as I want it. It's taught me not to fear rust, the sills were dropping off but they're as good as new now.

Well I've taken the plunge and I'm now the proud owner of a 99, two owner 20vt with 111k miles under its wheels. It's understated in Grigio Steel. It also has cloth seats which may not be to most people's liking but I like it. The main thing that sold me on it was its originality, it's never had any paintwork, has things like the oringjnal dealer number plates plus lots of history.

It's obviously not perfect, has bits of corrosion that need to be sorted soon rather than later and it needs the belts doing and a service.

I had a look at the LE that is currently on eBay but it wasn't the car for me, damp, rust in the boot, ticking engine, no visible coolant in the expansion bottle. Was too much of a project for me. The one I bought should be good as a daily driver whilst rectifying the problems as I go along.

Great stuff thumb

Did you buy from the previous owner or a dealer?

Did they shed a tear when you drove off in it?

I know I did when I sold mine.

Excellent, sounds like a good buy. This also sounds exactly like my first coupe I bought in the UK (I bought one in Spain before this). Silver with cloth and completely standard. Nothing wrong with the cloth seats, they are very comfy.

Check out the project thread I did on this one > CLICK

Welcome to the family thumb

Thanks everyone, it's great to have a warm welcome.

Good point about staring a thread, I'll start taking some pictures. I bought it off the second owner, they had owned it for 12 years and were sad to see it go, there were a few photos taken as i drove away.

I can't wait to get using it but I need to be patient and get the service and belts done. First impressions are very good though, it feels very solid. Time to enjoy the honeymoon period.
