How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos?

How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos? - 29/07/2009 15:41

I was thinking about possible brake upgrades and wondered if it would be possible to make some sort of bracket to fit an extra set of standard Brembos fit on to the front hub.

Has anyone else ever considered this?

It'll look weird with 2 calipers though laugh

I would not care if it stopped a lot better.

With a set of Brembos going for £70 a pair, it would be a cheap mod. Might look cool too...

Gotta be technical issues as to why this has never been done......on any car as far as I know?

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 29/07/2009 16:26

A quick Google reveals unnecessary unsprung weight, which makes sense I suppose. I'd expect you'd also have to mess about with master cyclinder sizes etc to take into account a second set of calipers.

Probably easier and cheaper to upgrade them smile

Dont understand that... Bikes often do this.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 29/07/2009 21:48

Old rollers used a pair of calipers on each front disc...

Not sure it would be good on the coupe though, as on the oe setup, I think the problem is fade, rather than ultimate stopping power...

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 29/07/2009 21:51

You'd need a larger master cylinder as you've just doubled the capacity of the front brakes, with a standard cylinder the brake pedal will hit the floor before you stop !
The disk would probably overheat with the extra friction, it's hard enough keeping the disk cool on one set of calipers, never mind two.

It would be more efficient to run uprated calipers and larger disk than try and do this I bet.

Ive used double calipers on my CBR 600F Stuntbike. Looked weird!

You might wanna upgrade to 330mm alfa gta brakes. Saint has done that, ask him if its any good

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 29/07/2009 22:26

Do what I did. Refurb the calipers, get new proper discs and descent pads. I mean decent pads. Did I mention decent pads laugh I'd be better stopping your car with my bare feet how it is now. laugh
Set aside £80 for new seals just in case (i didn’t need any and you may not either).
£40 for powder coating
£120 for Pagids. (BLUE)
Discs I £??? Mine were custom
And a good days work

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 07:47

OK, stop the nagging Jay! I'll be getting as set of EBC pad soon. I was just mulling over some ideas. BTW I did have a set of Pagid Greys before but they ripped through a set of disks in no time. My wheels were constantly covered in a spangley metalic sheen from the abrasion of the discs!

The problem with most brake upgrades is that it means I would not be able to run standard wheels.

The biggest problem with the standard Coupe brakes is that the servo assistance is much less than more modern cars, so it feels scary when slamming the foot to the floor. However, upgrading the servo or master cylinder would be a nightmare.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 07:51

i would just go for a bigger brake kit.

think of the hassle involved of making a bracket, mounting, pipe work and all the other joys that will go with it!

After you work out the cost involved to do a twin mount front callipers you might aswell of brought an upgrade kit!!

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 08:01

The disc will definitely overheat and with the extra unsprung weight it will also adversely affect the handling

It's not that expensive to convert using the Alfa GTA conversion kit.
I struggle to understand running 400BHP+ and expecting the standard setup to cope, it is nowhere near up to the job.

Second that, mine are fully refurbished with "decent-exceeding" pads (Carbotech XP8) and still they didn't manage 20min at Nürburgring GP-track. And I don't even have 300hp yet..

Alfa GTA/GT V6 seems like a good solution.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 09:36

It's not really the cost issue, just that I would like to improve the brakes without having to change the wheels.

The 330mm Alfa calipers would mean I have to change the wheels. I used Pagid Grey pads a while back but I ripped through a set of disks on a single track day shocked

I was just mulling over possible options as I'm interested in trying something new.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 09:43

A simple thing to try out would be better cooling. I have'nt had these on for a while but I do think they should help:

http://sfk.ibk.se/depa/showfile.php?carpic_no=2155&type=picture (print out until arrow size is 20cm, use on plastic or aluminium. Bend 45deg along arrow line.)

http://sfk.ibk.se/depa/index.php?sub=editcar&car_no=179 (the four pics at the bottom! the upper solution with tubes didn't really work with std 16" wheels as they rubbed the tube and it fell off)

Per, the second link doesn't work; I think a login might be required?

I'm guessing these are ducts for the brakes? If so, I'm very interested to see what you have put together, as I seem to manage to get mine quite hot laugh

As above, would really like to see this! smile

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 11:05

How about trying pagid yellows, they are supposed to give nearly the same performance but last longer, that is what nigel uses and he is at the same power level as you, also what discs do you use?
As Per suggested better cooling would help as the inside pad gets mulled more than the outside on the 20vt.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 11:52

I've got Pagid Yellow and DBA Wiperslots fitted (the same setup as Nigel, I believe), however I managed to get them very hot on the last track day!

To be fair, they didn't fade at all (which is more than I can say about other combinations that I've tried), but the wheel assembly got so hot that I couldn't change tyres round for 20mins, my Brembos are discoloured to gold, and I may have warped one of the DBA discs (the jury still out on that one)! laugh

Any extra cooling would be of great help!

Two calipers on one brake... Have seen it, but most of the time the smaller one (like McLaren rear brake, Porsche Carrera GT) is just for the handbrake.

But check out the Maybach 62:

Or this custom 200sx:

This is a nice Ares disc:

i was thinking about trying to make these work brake duct

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 12:36

I like the 200SX setup, that is just what I was thinking of.

I have tried various options in the past. I have always used 3G grooved disks with Pagid pads. The Pagid pads don't work well from cold and I was going to try the EBC brakes next time. But the main problem I have with the Coupe brakes is that they don't 'feel' great. I have to really push hard on the pedal, and I don't like that.

I used to have a Seat Cupra for carting the kiddies around and the brakes on that were fantastic, they really bit hard on the disks and responded instantly, even when cold.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 13:40

Its not that the coupe brakes are weak, new cars just have stronger brake servos.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 13:53

Squid - you're going to make the initial bite even worse if you fit "just more calipers".

In fact, if you want to increase the feel and the initial bite, braided brake lines will help. Also check for the friction value when 'cold' for initial bite on brake pads. Eg. Pagid:

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 13:54

Yeah, I realised that. I asked a while back if there was any way increasing the servo assistance and no one had any ideas.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 30/07/2009 14:08

Thanks KayJey. That's what I liked about the Greys that I had, it was just I was shocked at how quickly I wore out the disks!

You are right about the braded hoses too. I should probably get some. I had some ages ago but they had a problem and they wore a hole in them, and I replaced them with standard ones as I was in a hurry.

Looking at the Pagid Blues, they state that they don't wear the disks as badly, so maybe I'll try those.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 31/07/2009 12:25

Pagid Yellows are used by the Aston factory team on their LeMans cars

With adequate cooling, they last the whole 24 hours

On a Coupe, they are impossible to fade (although as Dave_t says, they do get pretty hot)

I get 12,000 out of pads and 25,000 out of discs - not bad for a setup that I can trust to stop me repeatedly from ridiculous speeds.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 31/07/2009 14:46

You could go wider on the disc as an alternative means of adding extra cooling. On some other cars people split the caliper and put a piece on ally in between such that they can fit say a 32mm or 35mm disc. You would need custom discs but it is a better way to go.

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 01/08/2009 03:15

I copied Marco (sparco time attack) and run 330mm gta brakes, they are 32mm thick with much larger brembo 4 pots, bolt up to the 20vt hub I believe but not 16vt.

You do need a min of 17" wheels and not all with fit, aslo unsprung weight increases about 2kg per corner, but this could be reduced to less then OE with lighter wheels, look cool and are certainly good stoppers, pads are shared with Evo 8/9 and Sub STi, also one of the astons (DB9??) anyway PM if you want pics

Re: How about fitting two sets of standard Brembos - 02/08/2009 20:05

I run pagid yellows for track days and testing and pagid greys for Time Attack. As Nogel says the yellows are brilliant pads but the most expensive of the pagid range. I see 180 degrees on mt temp indicators which is still quite hot but i get no fade whatsoever on either the yellows or the greys. The greys are the most damaging to the discs but have the highest operating temperature and one of the highest initial cold bites which means they work alomost instantaneously. There is always a price to pay for going faster, you need to spend more money making it stop. Nothing can be achieved on the cheap i'm afraid.

John's idea is a very good one and one i have looked into.
