Mazda MX5 laugh

Eldest grandson passed his driving test first time, just after Christmas and I'm very proud of him for doing so.

He's a car enthusiast and has been coming to car shows with me since he was about 2 years old.

He's always liked the MX5's, especially the Mk1's, but never expected him to own any of the models.

Insurance is horrendous on anything he looks at, but I unexpectantly saw a cheap and local MX5 for sale on Saturday and we ended up buying it laugh

It's a Mk2 and he's extremely happy, so one happy grandson laugh

Good thing is, is that he can't have 4 or 5 mates all squashed in the back either laugh

Got me thinking of first cars.

Mine was a Ford Escort 1100L. Silver, same as a galvanised steel bin.

Brilliant little car. I don't remember putting fuel in it, it may have run on beer breath.

This was the time in my life when you packed up the car with mates and set off on holiday. Very basic plans, no preparation blind optimism.

Result, no problems and great fun.

As for Sequentially or simultaneously, we weren't that clever. We'd aim for one after the other. Or all at the same time. Not that it got us very far.

Morris Minor 1000 for me, grey, CSW 541.

Wrapped it round a telegraph pole coming home from Glasgow back in the day, skidding on un-treated snow-packed road at a rural junction.

The first car I drove was my Mother's 12 seater Bedford Utilabrake on an airfield aged 13.

Aged 14 I had flown a DeHaviland Chipmunk and by 16 I had driven a Ferguson Tractor and a Land Rover also on airfields, retrieving gliders and towing launch cables from the winches to the flight line and flying Slingsby T21b gliders.

The first car I actually owned was a 1933 Morris Minor with a central accelerator pedal, which was different to my mothers and also the driving schools Morris Minor 1000s

My first car was a Datsun 120a F2, little 1200cc engine that was super economical, but the bodywork was rotten as hell

Today we bought the first car for our son. A second generation Panda.
My first was a Peugeot 306 diesel from my employer.

Val had three Pandas. All wonderfully simple.
Ours were fitted with aircon, satnav, dash cam, dishwasher and cctv.

New cars are a bit like microwaves, too many gadgets, when all you want to do is cook a baked potato.

Re: 17 year olds first car - 20/01/2024 21:25

My first car was a mini that someone had previously squeezed a 1700 engine into... I have no idea how; I was young and innocent then.

I had later (after a Nissan Sunny, a MK1 Escort, and a Datsun Bluebird) a Datsun 120Y which was a hoot... I dropped a five speed box into that one, just to see if it was possible, and that led to a Datsun 240Z, an Escort-based kit car which ended up with a 120Y lump in it, and a couple of Fiats, pandas and unos and puntos, a 127 powered kit car, a Nissan Silvia, more Fiats, the 16v coupe, a further selection of Fiats, a 20vt coupe, more fiats, a Seat Leon Cupra, a 20vt powered kit car, more fiats, and finally the current French Thing[tm].

It seems I have a strange taste in cars. Many of the above overlapped.

He's starting to discover the 'joys' of a 20 year old car laugh

Central locking playing up.
ABS light has come on.
Check engine light on, then off.
Handbrake warning light on and off.
Something hanging down and making a noise at the rear of the car (which I suspect is a handbrake cable ).

Told him to join an MX5 forum laugh

That's not good news T, relieved he didn't get hurt other than his pride so the car did it's job.
