Better looking as estate?

Better looking as estate? - 11/01/2024 12:24

To my eye most cars look better in saloon or coupe form, not least I suppose as result of being designed that way but there are a few cars that I think look better as estates. Volvos for example (not the P series though) particularly the 200 and 700, which to me looked odd as saloons, possibly because the estates were so ubiquitious back in the day. Some of the big BMWS and Mercs look good also, but what is the best looking estate and is it better than it's saloon eqivalent?

I like my 2013 XF Sportbrake, so much so that I don't have any pictures of it rolleyes As to whether it's better than the saloon, hmmm, maybe?

Probably depends whether you need to move wardrobes frequently... laugh

Not really Simon. It was a home market 1220cc version that I bought at 6 months old and 6000 kms when I lived in SW France.

I even brought it back to the UK and used it for 7 years when we returned here.

I had it for almost 10 years and 290000kms without anything major going wrong, A new clutch at 180000kms was about it and NO RUST.

Very comfortable seats and ride quality

MG ZTT - had a 1.8T for almost 10 years which virtually gave faultless service. Drove the ZT V6's at work and although not a direct comparison I thought the estate version handled better, looked the better car and obviously had the additional load flexibility.

Alfa 156 / 159 estates. Never driven either but good looking cars compared to their saloon version and the general opinion was certainly the 156 estate handled better.

Y'know, that still looks as if it should have a coffin in the back...

(Monty Python: the only link I can find is broken, hence some paraphrasing... "Dead? In a hurry? Phone Arthur Smith of Prestatyn and our Fiat 850 will be outside in no time. Out of the door and down the hatch in thirty minutes or your money back!")

Alfa 159 - Sportwagon (especially with roof rails) is much better-looking than the saloon (which is hardly a duffer itself…)

Audi RS6

BMW E30

Jag XF

Volvo 850
