Mysterious LEDs

In the centre consol of my 2006 E320 Merc is what looks to be an aftermarket fitment with 2 LEDs. I've never seen these LEDs lit (though the consol has a lid/armrest) nor is it obvious how to open up the small "panel" I to which they are fitted. My immediate thoughts are that it's some indicator for either an immobiliser or "chip" though I can't find any evidence for either. Any other ideas as to what it might be?

Our 2004 E320 had a bizarre mobile phone cradle fitted. I also seem to recall some LEDs (even seeing them lit?), but I thought they were related to the phone stuff.

Could be phone-related, Jim. There's no sign of other phone bits though. They aren't an issue but I am curious.

I seem to recall that the ones in ours were an amber colour?
