Worth getting a car to keep no claims going..? - 11/02/2010 02:08

Hiya..

I'm without a car for the next 7 months or so while I save for next one, I sold the Coupe about 5 months into my 5th year of no claims...

Just been looking at insurance for the car I'm intending on buying - it's gone from under £300 for the Coupe, to over £800 for the Elise 111S I want.

D'ya reckon it'd go down any noticeable amount if I can complete that 5th year of no claims? Say buy a banger and just insure it..

I'm 29, so it'd be cheap to insure a hatch. I just didn't realise it'd be so pricey for a Lotus - I've had lower quotes for truly exotic cars!

Advice welcome. Have tried the usual tricks - adding a parent as a named driver and the like.. That brought it down from over a grand! Just seems a little odd, there are kids with Lotii paying far less than that! (gits)

You could get 2 quotes.

A quote with 4 years NCB and a quote with 5 years NCB to see how much difference it would make?

Ah that's a sensible idea, thanks Dan.

It might make a fair old difference once you hit 30 too.

There a garage near were I work which specialises in repairing the Elise. Spoke with one of the guys who works there when picking up my car and the main crash problem is locking the brakes and rear ending other cars or sliding of the road and hitting things.
There was 14 of them in there at the time! (this was a few years ago) Maybe its the amount of crashes they sustain that drives the insurance price up?
NB this is Surrey where the size of wallet usually outstrips driving ability....
