General Insurance Query - 07/09/2006 15:52

Hey all,

As some of you may know, I'm about to get a Coop and have had some great insurance quotes thanks to the listings on here, so thanks to you all for your help.

I have a general, unrelated enquiry that I wondered if any of you may know about. My last car was written off, and I've been waiting ages now for an offer. I've rung the insurer today (Admiral) and they said they have received the mandate back from the DVLA and there are 6 points on my license that they were not aware of. Now, when I registered with Admiral, I had 3 points on my license, which have since expired as they were over 5 years old. The other 6 points I have received since then (for doing 40 through a 30mph speed camera, twice, because they changed the speed limit of the road overnight!!) I didnt tell Admiral about as I thought you only had to when it came to your renewal.

The lady on the phone said my details have gone to the underwriters to get checked out before they make an offer, due to these 6 points being on there. I'm just a little worried now. I thought you didnt have to mention the points til your next renewal, which I'm guessing is now not the case. Are Admiral in their rights to tell me to just b*gger off and that they are no longer going to insure me because of this??

They could well decide not to insure you as you should declare any changes when they occur not just at renewal time. For six points I would have thought they would possibly increase your premium slightly rather than refuse to insure you.

It is written in your policy that you must update Admiral with any changes to your car/license etc.... as they occur, not at renewal.

They are within their rights to decline cover due to non-disclosure in my opinion. Whether they do this or not comes down to how lucky you are and the Underwriters/Claims Solicitor's decision. In some cases they will not honour that claim, in others they will ask for you to pay more cash towards your policy (because if you disclosed that info they would have charged you more anyway) then they will honour your claim.

If they pay out, then go buy a lottery ticket is my advice. Always disclose any information relevant to your car insurance immediately. 6 points on your license will be relevant to how much you will pay for insurance, I'm sure you know that.

I was under the impression I'd have to pay more... which is fine. I'm guessing they'd just take some off of the offer they are making for my old car.

Be very harsh IMO if they refused to pay completely.

Admiral have said that because the additional points were incurred mid term, then there is no problem at all.

Phew!
