When regular insurance is cheaper than specialist

I have to admit, I’m surprised.

It’s renewal time, so I’m shopping around. The best I can get from a classic or specialist insurer is £950-ish.

There are a few factors against me when shopping for insurance. Living in Glasgow city centre without a garage. My classic being my only car, not a second car. And me having very little no claims bonus, thanks to only having had classic cars in the past.

Still … £950 is by far the best I could find, and that’s from my current insurer.

Just for a laugh, I put my details into a bog standard insurance comparison site – regular car insurance instead of specialist.

£322.

£322! Amazing! And the features of the policy are near-identical.

I would have thought that the biggest difference to consider is that classic ins will give you an agreed value, whereas normal insurance will only pay out 'the market value' and proving that is any more than We Buy Any Car.com value it at would be very hard. In my case, despite having just spent £2k on my car, the value at WBAC.COM is £205, at that is probably about what I would get if it was written off. I have normal ins on mine, you just have to be aware of that.
