Classicline Insurance - 31/05/2015 09:27

After a couple of years with Neil Willies, then Glynwood, I got chatting to Classicline Insurance at their stand at Auto Italia

Oliver Saunt is an ex-Coupe owner (and regretting selling his 350 bhp 20vt...), so he knows all about the car and the fascination they hold

This year, I gave him the chance of a quote, and he beat Glynwood's renewal quite comfortably

  • 3,000 miles a year (more than enough normally, but I'm off to LeMans this year)
  • £7,500 agreed value
  • All mods declared - £12,500 of spend and 480-ish bhp
  • Breakdown cover (inc Homestart and European cover)
  • Excess of just £250
  • Trackday cover

Total cost for a year was just £245

I reckon a more "normal" Coupe would be a fair bit cheaper

Definitely worth giving Oliver a try

Nigel, how much did they beat your other quotes by?
It's too early to get any quotes for mine yet but will certainly give them a go nearer the time!

Re: Classicline Insurance - 31/05/2015 16:45

About fifty quid difference - not a huge saving, but as a percentage of the renewal, is was pretty good

Great stuff that, mines not up till December but will be sure to give them a try.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 11/06/2015 09:00

theyve done mine too for the last 3yrs - £204 for the LE this year :-) as nigel points out, beating other offers by at least £50.
record was £1,100!

I've just insured my 16vt of doom with them at a decent price, i've had deltas with them for years at good prices. Touch wood not had to claim yet though!

I'll second Classicline - I've just insured with them too, far far cheaper than anywhere else. Plus Oliver (olly) is a top bloke and used to have a coop running 450ish bhp build by Barbs.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 17/06/2015 15:04

I must have had the same guy on the phone … he told me all about his old Coop as well! Couldn’t insure me though, they couldn’t handle me not having a garage and living in central Glasgow.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 13/11/2015 13:02

I just tried and despite "only" 350bhp and 5,000 miles, parked on drive in low crime area, I can't get below £400 frown

Re: Classicline Insurance - 13/11/2015 18:19

Tried footman James mark? Always been cheaper year after year.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 14/11/2015 13:07

I just took up Classicline insurance - £10k valuation, 5000 miles, two hundred quid.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 07/12/2015 06:33

Emailed Oliver, lets see what comes back to insure three of them with extremely little use.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 14/03/2016 12:37

Just gone with these people, £305 + shrapnel for a year with good coverage, i'll be taking up the protected value too - Thanks Oliver, you quoted me happy!

Re: Classicline Insurance - 14/03/2016 12:40

This is interesting to see.

Classicline have just become the insurance partner for the Porsche owners club I work for. Will definitely have to give them a shot when it’s time to renew.

So this means you have a coupe Mr Proccy!! Where are the pictures may I ask??

Slacker!

Re: Classicline Insurance - 15/03/2016 06:58

Classicline quoted me £340 for mine and Glynwood £230.

Exactly the same information supplied of course but the Glynwood quote had an agreed value so I went with it! The strange thing was it was underwritten by exactly the same insurance company.

Needless to say I wont be trying Classicline again.

Not true yet Phil, but it's best to take precautions when the climax is due laugh

Re: Classicline Insurance - 15/03/2016 08:50

Well as they say in the States, YMMV, it's worth trying as many companies each year, you may not change at all, or you may change every year. It's hard trying to understand how these companies work, in my case Glynwood were better than Classicline, and the only reason I can think of that some of us can't do any better with Classicline is that we're living in the "wrong" area (south of the Thames, or Glasgow wink )

Re: Classicline Insurance - 15/03/2016 09:36

£216 3k per year on 300bhp coop. Happy with that

Re: Classicline Insurance - 16/03/2016 13:49

I ended up going with Classicline - £370 for me and MrsC (who has 6 points on her licence) for a remapped 20VT. It includes quite a few good points like agreed valuation - with photos and an assessment form completed by FCSS.
The only PITA is that the maximum mileage I could get was 7,500pa, which may well not be enough (we did 17000 last year).
The only company willing to offer as high as 10,000 was Adrian Flux and I was really unimpressed with their customer service (not to mention the £540 quote...)

Not sure what happens if we get too close to the limit, but I'm guessing more money will doubtless be involved.

I should add that my quote is for a modified car in excess of 300bhp

Re: Classicline Insurance - 16/03/2016 14:55

I'd like Classic line to confirm their policy is either an insured policy or an under written policy. This has still not been made clear to me as it makes a massive difference with a total loss claim, ie the agreed amount no argument, or showing similar examples for sale at the time of the incident which would gauge the market value.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 16/03/2016 15:44

Joe they stated to me that they would offer a separate but additional policy for c£35 for agreed valuations with the usual qualifiers - pictures etc etc

Ok, an additional policy which is what, insured or under written?

The two are totally different when it comes to making a claim.

Good question.......

Re: Classicline Insurance - 17/03/2016 14:50

Hi Joe,
Just taken out insurance with CLI, well happy with the service and the price. This is a copy of the letter regarding the agreed value, it isn't a separate policy. "Classicline's agreed valuation service, we acknowledge your payment of £0. Please complete and return the attached vehicle valuation form and please follow the instructions set out on the vehicle valuation form. Please note until we have received a completed valuation form along with the required photographs and we have sent you a certificate of valuation agreeing the valuation of your vehicle the vehicle will be covered on a market value basis only."
They would like about six photos, outside and inside, and engine bay, with the vehicle reg in one or more of the pictures.
Does that answer your question, I've got copies of all the paperwork, sent me yesterday, will bring them up on Saturday.

It's still rather vague John, they offer a certificate of valuation agreement but does that ensure if a total loss was to occur you'll receive that agreed amount?

Still looks a little grey to me, I know I may be viewed as being a little pushy with this subject atm but I deal with calls from owners where they say they've been involved in an accident and the insurance is only offering market value, these are people that have also purchased agreed valuations which were insurance policies, not under written so for those past incidents it wasn't worth the paper it's written on.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 17/03/2016 15:52

Hope this helps, Joe - below is a direct copy from their letter to me regarding values.....

"The figure that we agree will be the current market value of the vehicle and unfortunately
cannot take into account the cost of restoration or any sentimental value. If you have recently purchased the vehicle, the purchase price will be the agreed value."
Posted By: Countrycruising

Re: Classicline Insurance - 17/03/2016 16:09

Well that's pretty straight and to the point Steve frown

Purchase cost only, if you then spend another £10k on it after having the vehicle restored and it's written off, well that just hard luck by the looks of it.

Visit Lancaster Insurance, they have lowered there benchmark to 15 years and agreed valuation, as i shopping around for insurance at moment.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 18/03/2016 09:23

I suppose the thing to do is only invest heavily in restoration just before your bi-annual revaluation.
It does make sense from the insurer's point of view; otherwise you could claim to have spent thousands on the car just before it unfortunately burned to a crisp.
Also, if you do no restoration and use the car as a dodgem, you still get the agreed value if it gets T-boned.

I also imagine that - for a fee, naturally - you could have a re-valuation performed.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 18/03/2016 09:44

After speaking with Classic line this morning they've informed me that if a total loss was to occur with an agreed valuation then the agreed amount would be the amount paid out.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see as their policies aren't underwritten.

Thanks for getting the information from the horse's mouth Joe. At least we now know the situation and can make our choice accordingly.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 31/05/2016 10:13

ClassicLine’s online system is a bit frustrating. I’m going to need to phone them instead.

I started filling in the form for a quote, but had to stop and return later. When I returned it had timed out (fair enough), but it won’t let me start afresh. I get as far as putting my email address in, then it tells me I already have an account and must log in to continue. But I can’t log in because I don’t actually have an account – I had only just started filling in the form.

That aside, my hunt for insurance this year is going well so far. As usual, I’m cheaper with a normal insurer than a specialist. Best specialist quote so far is £600+ with a £500 excess from Adrian Flux … whereas my best normal quote is £179 with a £350 excess from Direct Line.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 01/06/2016 18:54

Well, ClassicLine couldn’t help, was looking at around £700 with them. Really friendly and thorough, but my situation just seems to suit high street insurers better than specialist firms.

I got Direct Line down to £164 with only £250 excess. Had to go for that, really. Daft not to … That’s for 10,000 miles, parking on-street and adding my girlfriend as a named driver. Amazing really.

That's a great quote!
I thought I was doing well paying £280.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 02/06/2016 19:21

The problem with mainstream insurance comes if the car gets written off.

Usually it will be a derisory payment following very minor damage.

Re: Classicline Insurance - 09/06/2016 17:55

No agreed value is the trade-off for cheap cover. I’m aware of that, and consider it a reasonable gamble. Over four years I’ll save the entire value of the car.
