urget help needed just viewed a 20vt coupe - 28/06/2010 19:50

hi guys just viewd a coupe 20vt in sprint blue.

was really nic had 1000ss of recepits and full service history and mileage was only 87k.

lots of mods and dyno grpahs but no chip.

but the car was has a crack in manifold that was pretty bad and the oil pressure was around 1 to 1.5 bar when hot.

could the manifold effect this?

there was no smoke at all cold or hot however it was a little low on oil.

the car drove excellent and if it was any other car id buy it but being new to this type of car and knowing the expense of repair bills i said id contact him later this evening to

what should the oil pressure be?

it was just idleing at 1000 revs with out touching any pedals

please help me
cheers

A cracked manifold (which is common) will not affect the oil pressure

1 - 1.5 bar is quite low, but could be caused by having too thin oil - I use 15W50 in my car and I get 1.5 - 2 bar

However, as long as the oil pressure rises to 3 bar by 2,000rpm, it should be OK

Re: urget help needed just viewed a 20vt coupe - 28/06/2010 19:57

it was rising to 3 bar as soon as the throttle was pressed, we nipped to the garage to put a little more oil and raised it slightly but it was still around 1 - 1.5bar

the tapping only went away after a long time driving car, till it really heated up so must be a fair sized crack.

however he did show me the recepit from the garage he bought it from that said on it, that it was sold with a cracked manifold.

any one else have an opinion?

How old is the oil in it? It could be really thin and basically knackered if it hasn't been changed in a while! This would affect the pressure reading.

yea i think it was definately due an oil change. the oil was old i could tell. how much could this effect it?

mate leave it alone! 1 bar oil pressure is crap whatever the reasons.. if its crap oil then its not being looked after that well anyway..get him to change the oil to a fully synth even if he goes to halfords for it and then check it at hot idle ..leave it running after you have test driven and wait untill its really warm before taking a reading..it obviously needs an oil change if the guy wants to sell get him to have it done (with filter) then tell him you will go back and look again..don't buy as is i wouldn't buy at all if thats how its been looked after (left with crack from when bought and absolutely done for oil which is not doing it any good at all)..mate there are plenty for sale out there... i have sold a real good one this week cheaply and if you tell me your budget i am sure i can do better than the one you have seen..remember you need to buy one thats had a recent cambelt unless you have budgetted for that and one thats been servced regularly ..would be a good idea..stay away from any adds that say wicked car or absolute animal..very rare and the like or make bhp claims with no proper mods etc if they cant spell properly or use text speak count them out too..tell me your budget seriously and i will help you find one if you like

mate its your money but you have asked for advice and been given some really good advice..the most important(indicated) thing is oil pressure if its way too low ,which that cars is, you are buying a knacker it doesnt matter what the weathers like how much he wants to sell(and i bet he does)its still no good ..not listening to the advice(good advice from in some cases laugh experienced owners)is bonkers.. straight away you need a manifold and when was the cambelt done last? its a must and a £400 job..anyway theres not a man on here that would buy that car for themselves to run with that oil pressure...it sounds like you want it too much.. a 700 coop is not the best place to start ownership but a 700 coop with bad oil pressure and a manifold with a massive crack and been run with crap oil is just a disaster waiting to happen..have you checked oil cooler pipes etc also?..if the guy is desperate to sell and has no money whats he spent on maintaining it?nothing by the sounds of it but i bet hes been out and played in it..dodgy oil or no..as i said before i will if you are prepared to wait a few days find you one at under 1k thats a much better car ... i know of a couple of cheap ones that run well and do not need major work..anyw3ay good luck

If you have a massive wad of cash lying around buy it, if not leave well alone. I bought one for £2000 and still got a repair bill of £1000 a week later. I thought i'd done my homework and knew what i was looking for, the car seemed spot on when i handed over the cash. There are shed loads of really good coupes out there if you take a bit of time to look for them. I guarantee after you have bought it you will see a much nicer one you wish you'd bought.

Surely it's his money he can spend it as he wants. I think the told you so's will come if he starts posting in the technical issues section every 5 minutes.

He seems to be aware now that he is buying one which could/ is going to cause trouble and if that's the case and he has the money and desire to return it back to it's former glory then good luck I say!

Re: urget help needed just viewed a 20vt coupe - 29/06/2010 18:22

right guys,
fristly thanks for the advice,

i went today to view the car again. this time knowing what oil pressure to look for

and the car was below 1 bar when hot probably 0.7 -0.8!

wasnt going to 3bar until 3k revs either

it was a shame as it had all the old mots , full service history 1000s of pounds worth of recepits. for all sorts

only 87k with cambelt at 85k, scorpion exhaust, dyno graphs showing 218bhp, k&N, hid lights, 4 new tyres, mot till march tax till nov , cat 1 alarm, all keys and was only 770 quid
also had le side skirts and strut brace!

probably could break it for more

any way now im glad i didnt buy it as the oil pressure was just too low, i told my self it was above 1bar id buy it and try to raise the pressure with an oil change as the weather is very hot

also was dubious about the exhaust manifold, almost sounded like piston slap and didnt go away this time! only when it gets very hot that it does

thanks
ill keep looking anyway
cheers
