All these wires, which does what????

All these wires, which does what???? - 20/05/2006 15:05

Hi,

Seeing as I've got a new head unit on order and I had to get a new battery fitted to my coop yesterday, I've decided to remove the old, faulty (maybe the cause of my dead battery) head unit. However, I only expected to find the two standard connectors, aerial, power aerial and CD Changer connectors behind there. There seem to be one or two extra!!!

Can someone quickly explain what each of these connector are?

I know that Number 4 is the aerial, but 1,2 and 3 really have me confused.

I think 3 looks like your CD boot changer cable. Not sure about the other 2 though.

Number 2 was connected to the Philip headunit that I removed. I have no idea what it does though and the manual for the old head unit has no diagrams showing that connector.

Im sure when i had my coupe it had a kenwood head unit fitted and i changed it to a sony one. Dont know if you will need a fiat head unit adaptor cable to convert it to whatever head unit you are fitting?

The head unit I've getting is a DVD/CD MP3 jobbie. I doubt I'll need a cd changer when I can have 4.7GB of MP3s on one DVD

I'm more concerned abount ensuring that the aerial amplifier is connected.

1. Is a diagnostic socket.
2. Is a multichager socket for your Philips.
3. Looks like the original Clarion multichanger socket.
4. Aerial.

Thanks for that. How odd, why would anyone have replaced the clarion with the philips? Both are 6 disc cd-changers and I know for sure that Philips was rubbish.

Ah well, now I just need 2 new tyres (as of 2 hours ago )

LOL Too right I changed the Clarion for a Sony (which are by nomeans the best HU's) but even so the difference in sound quality was staggering.

So if those four connectors are for the aerial, diagnostics and 2 CD changers, where is the power aerial connector for the antenna amplifier????

I know disc changers are funny with compatabilty with the head unit.
ASi found when my old sony changer didnt work with my new JVC head unit.

Right, well the new head unit has arrived and is fitted. However (predicatbly) I need an aerial adaptor. What is the connector on the end of the factory fitted aerial lead?

Also, is it normal that the stereo's power feed is not switched? I'm not overly keen on having the stereo permanently powered, especially after my flat battery last week. Is there a FAQ style fix for this?

Cheers,

For switched live there is no FAq but easy enough to do. Seams to be a FIAT thing. I undid the tape covering the wiring loom that lead to the Ciggy lighter then tapped into this to provide the switched live to the stereo.

you can get the aerial addapter form any where even halfords etc should be under a fiver? who fitted your new one? they should have given you the choice of permentley powered, or iggnition switched, i alwas give the customer that choice,an installer can [or should i would hope,] be able to find a switched live easy ,one plus tho, at least you wont have to leave your igg on to play your tunes, you should be ok as lond as you remember to switch off.

I fitted the head unit last night when I got home from work. It was a bloody nightmare stowing the wiring far enought out of the way for the head unit to slide all the way in.

I'll pop into Halfords on the weekend and get an aerial adaptor. I've got 4.5Gb of Mp3s to entertain me before I need the radio

Remembering to switch off is easy, I just remove the face-off. I just prefer the idea of a switched live. The question is, which one do I make switched as I don't want to be resetting the clock every time I drive the car!!

Bockers, did you have to remove the whole centre console to access the ciggy lighter loom or can you access with just the head unit removed?

This may be a job for next weekend.

Re: All these wires, which does what???? - 30/05/2006 00:30

No. I just traced the wire that lead to the ciggy lighter and spliced into it further up the loom. No need to remove the console. Just a case of lying upside down in the car with a torch and your head in the drivers footwell
