CD Changer Compatability - 25/01/2006 18:07

Hello all

Ive just treated myslef to a new head unit with some xmas money i got.
Its a JVC but i cant seem to get the sony disc changer in it working.
Are most cd changers compatible with most head units? I would of thought they should be, but maybe im wrong.

Cheers

No. Hardly any are

Sony and Alpine use the same leads but mixing them up will kill the Head units

Best best is to sell the sony on ebay, where they still attract good money, and buy a JVC one.

Think I managed to find a pretty good deal too. Got this one for 179.00 from somewhere other than halfrauds!!
head unit
Not really too into my ice but thought it was a better thing to spend xmas money than top mounts or something!

Some great bargains to be had out there!!!!
I lookes at the others but prefered the darker one I got.
So easy to put in too, took about 5 mins to take the old one out and put the new one in!
Cracking sound too and the OEL display is cool.

Whats the oel display?
im more chuffed with the sound of mine that i thought i was.
Feeling guilty like i should of spent the money on something that is on my to do list for the car though.

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 25/01/2006 19:55

Mine has a multicoloured OEL display that scrolls through different pictures of a TVR driving through a city.
You can customize the pictures and set the colours to whatever you want, about 15 different colours I think.
This is what sold me on it to be honest, didn't realise it did this until I went to Halfrauds and saw it working.
Does yours not do this, thought it would for the money plus the display looks similar.
I'll try and take a pic of mine working after or maybe a small videoclip.

Just looked it up and your spec is virtually identical to mine and yours has the same picture display as mine and it quotes 256 different colours!!

OEL stands for Organic Electroluminescent btw. A lower power LCD replacement IIRC.

I think you can get leads that allow to have different make head unit to a cd changer. Think is the company is called Auotleads. Again motorworld do them i think.

Halfords do the full range of Autoleads aswell. Or you can phone them directly. Really helpful too.

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 26/01/2006 02:02

yes they do but these are only for OEM Head units. Most of these HUs are Grundigs, VDO and Phillips models. Never seen anything that will connect to a JVC.

You can also try these people, ther have a forum too.

Connects 2

Bockers

You seem to know your stuff with the ICE stuff, which unforunatly i dont!
What you recommend someone in my situation might do?
Would be nice to keep a disc changer, but im not that bothered. Either i try get the correct leads, or swap the changer.
My main concern it to not damage the head unit.

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 26/01/2006 04:41

Phil

You will not get a Sony CD changer to talk to a JVC unless someone brings out an adapter, which will be about £50 anyways.

The reason i know so much on this was that i had a similar situation with our family car and my old punto and tried to do what you are doing and hit dead ends everywhere.

Your choices, if it were me, are.
Change the Hu for a Sony one. However if you are happy with the JVC then stick with it, I had one in the past and it was the most reliable bit of kit I ever had, and it still workd 20 yrs later.

Sell the Sony changer with its lead on ebay or through forum and stick with just a HU.

Buy a JVC changer (make sure lead is included as they cost over £30) and use that.

I like lots of choice in my Car and don't want to faf around with CDs in the car, also I find MP3 onse are very sensitive to scratches.

I would sell the Sony and get this ;-
JVC 12 disk MP3 player

That's enough music (over 200 cds) for even the longest journey and will work faultlessly with you new HU.

Hope this helps

Funnily enough, thats where i got the HU from, and the changer i was tempted to get. Supprisingly i think dixons do it for a similar price.
One feature i love on the new HU is the sd card slot.

Cheers for the advice Bockers, think i'll go for the changer when funds permit!

Thanks again

Phil - MIGHT be able to help you out again mate..
I have a JVC KD-MK88 12 disc changer out of my coupe
when I first bought it... I took it out, as i'm not a fan of changers.

The cable for it, is still currently in the car as I was a lazy fccuker and couldn't be bothered to remove it, but if you do some checking out, and find it'll suit your needs i'll make the effot and remove it for you..

It would come with 2 carts.... check it out mate.

P.s. I no longer have the head unit as it was kinda knackered... so it's just the changer..

i've got a kenwood head unit and 10-disc changer in the boot. the headunit's display doesn't work anymore but the buttons do - anyway it's going out and i'm replacing it with an alpine unit. will be changing the changer for an alpine one also but does anyone know it the interconnect between the headunit and changer is kenwood specific or is there a universal type that the manufacturers all use?

They are all different Certainly you will not get a Kenwood and an Alpine to talk to each other.

sorry, i meant taking out the kenwood cd changer and kenwood head unit and replacing both with alpine ones but still using the same cable that connected the kenwood units together. is this possible?

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 02/02/2006 23:01

no they are different cables
Posted By: phil_20VT

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 03/02/2006 04:28

Are all cables for different manufacturers different?
for example a sony and a jvc?!?!?
feels like a stupids question, but im struggling to find much on the internet about it all.
Posted By: bockers

Re: CD Changer Compatability - 03/02/2006 05:04

sony and alpine share the same cable but the units are not intrechangeable. All the rest are different IIRC. Kenwood have 3 different types of cable for example.

Not a stupid question at all it is just amazing how many types of cable there are and how expensive they are
