Speakers - 22/10/2016 17:56

Hello guys, I don't know if I am posting this topic in the right sub-forum, but I really want to know if 17cm speakers will fit the opening in the front doors. Thank you.

Best thing is to take the door card off to see how they're mounted and what size you've got to play with.

6.5"/16cm speakers are the std size, iirc. I expect that the mountings for a 17cm speaker is actually the same; the manufacturer just trying to say that the actual cone is a little bigger than standard. See if you can find out if the diameter of the mount holes and compare them with a 16cm speaker.

I have a set like these (might be the older, original version though as they have been in a few years now):

http://www.ebay.at/itm/Rainbow-Green-Line-SL-6-2-CO-16-5-cm-6-5-Premium-Kompo-System-400-Watt-/400923360499?hash=item5d58e4fcf3:g:vs0AAOSwZd1VXLFN

They are specified as 16.5cm but fit directly and are shallow enough (65 mm) to not cause the windows any problems. The opening needs to be 140mm and the FIAT clearly has that too. Hope this gives you a starting point.

Re: Speakers - 24/10/2016 20:09

Thanks for the advice. I am looking to get these TS-G1732i right now. It says that the mounting width is 128mm and the depth is 38,5mm so I am pretty sure they will fit judging by the stock ones which I got out and replaced with some old sony's.. By the way are sony x-plod head-units any good?

Re: Speakers - 25/10/2016 08:46

Not sure about Sony anymore. Once upon a time they made really good, reliable head units. More recently they seem to just die much too young frown

So last time I switched back to Panasonic, who have some nice products. Seems a bit of a lottery these days as everything is built down to the lowest possible price and the highest possible complexity - not a great combination of characteristics!

Re: Speakers - 29/10/2016 13:13

So, I am about to buy Pioneer TS-G1732i. Before I do that I want to ask for last time if they will fit because it says they are 17cm and I know that the stock speakers are 16,5cm.
If anyone knows, please feel free to share as the stock ones are awful..

Re: Speakers - 30/10/2016 08:16

If the originals are 16.5 and the Pioneers are 17 I would suggest there's a risk they will not be a direct fit. Can you find a 16.5 for a similar cost?

Re: Speakers - 30/10/2016 18:12

Well to be honest, here in Bulgaria the suppliers don't ship the full gamma of products which the manufacturer makes, so the choice isn't that big.. These are the closest and the best ones I was able to find in 3 days of searching for the perfect ones. I think I am going to take the risk with the hope I will be able to return them if they don't fit.

If somebody has ever fit 17cm speakers in the front doors without modifying, please reply here. Thank you again guys.

Re: Speakers - 02/11/2016 15:31

As I suggested earlier, the 170mm size is a marketing dimension. There is a dimensional drawing here and it seems to be a standard 6.5"/16.5mm chassis:

It is also a very shallow unit, so you should not have any problems.

They fit perfectly and the sound is amazing. Thanks to everybody who helped me with this.

Offtopic: I think I set a new record today xD. Disassembled the whole interior and installed the speakers for one day.

Glad it has worked out smile

Btw, what did you do with the original dash tweeters? You're not using them anymore?

Re: the Sony or alternative head units, my memory was playing tricks on me. I went for a Pioneer one which was a nice compromise between, power, quality, card reader, USB connection and did not look massively modern. Might be worth a look if you are still looking for a new one.

Re: Speakers - 07/11/2016 16:37

Yeah, still looking for a head unit. My eyes are on sony cdx-g3100uv for now but I am up for suggestions.

I did not even disconnect the dash tweeters yet. going do that in the next few days.

Re: Speakers - 08/11/2016 12:30

what size / spec are the tweeters?

I canyt see any benefits in disconnecting them, unless the tops are overpowering, but i wouldnt expect that as the 17cm driver is firing into your leg

Re: Speakers - 08/11/2016 12:30

im wondering what components would work?

Re: Speakers - 08/11/2016 15:04

There is quite a bit of space so the chances are that any not-oversized tweeter will be fine. It has been done many times before and there are some guides like this one:

http://www.fiatcoupe.net/howto.php?ID=10

I made a mounting ring and glued the new tweeter to the underside of the dash grill so it still looks standard - just sounds noticably clearer. High-level positioning of the tweeters is always better from a sound quality point of view.

I was not unhappy with the stock stuff. Their failings were more in the unobtrusive category - it didn't sound bad, just that there was more to come if one could be bothered. A decent component replacement has brought out better clarity and a more natural sound. A small active sub hidden in the boot cubby hole fills out the bottom meaning I don't need to turn it up as much to get a full sound.

Re: Speakers - 05/02/2017 08:33

Hey Neil-

That's very interesting to read.

Personally, I took the opportunity to replace the rear drivers, when swapping out the interior and rear panels a year or two ago.
The fronts are getting swapped this year- I have always admired the clear line-of-sight setup of the front speaker positions in the Coupe.

Along with the minimal grill: I think it makes for a great basis for a decent system. Few 'modern' cars have that kind of speaker-friendly setup.
Sometimes, I think, along with the speaker size, that the FIAT Coupé was made for music!

However, please tell us about the mini sub, that you keep in the boot recess...?

Re: Speakers - 27/02/2017 13:35

The sub was just a 100 Pound Pioneer, probably equivalent to a current Pioneer TS-WX120A. It is bolted to the body in the left-hand recess (on a wooden board to make the screw positioning easier). Bass is omnidirectional and its sound manages to get through the car interior just fine. Tune the level and crossover with a little care and you get a fairly seamless sound.

I have reasonable 6x9s in the back but they don't really seem to contribute much to what I hear in the drivers seat. But for a total outlay of about 400 Pounds the sound quality is pretty crisp, neutral and solid.

Re: Speakers - 06/05/2017 09:49

I just bought a cdx-n5100bt today and it sounds AWESOME but with it comes the big amount of bass and now I have to put some sound dampening material on my doors because the whole car is literally shaking with it. Also can you guys tell me where the head unit ground is connected to the chassis because there is one really annoying hissing noise when there is no music playing but the source is still connected? Thanks.
