Which Brake Discs and Pads?

Which Brake Discs and Pads? - 23/12/2005 02:34

With the old forum went the group buy history that gave a good idea of the best discs and pads to go for to minimise fade and warping. Could somebody (Nigel, Doctorfrag, Fishy...) remind me which are the best front discs and pads to go for?

I am really after the best performance vs cost ratio - dont want to skimp but similarly dont want to blow my life's savings. Again mostly road but also some track use....

Thanks

IIRC it was 3G grooved & dimpled discs with Pagid pads (Blue or Grey depending upon use and how heavy your right foot is ). I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm this.

I have the Blues and the RS10 discs from 3G up front. not sure how usefull the dimples are but ive been hammering them loads and they do still give a little bit but only under extreme use, kinda stuff you would usually see on a track after a few heavey hard laps of a small tight track

To be honest i think i should have used greys for my abuse traits but the blues are weaing well at the minute as are the discs and they grip very well, and probably helped kill opf my old set of front tyres quicker than i thought but with the new ones dig in super well and even with full oil level just perfect on the grip strips up to some lights without the abs kicking in i can brake so hard the oil pressure starts to dip to about 1.5-2bar while coasting so heavey brakign indeed generated

What about Ferrodo pads. Are they good?

Its what ive got Gillo

Depends mainly on how you abuse/use your brakes as to what to go for though

The dimples are purely for cosmetic reasons, don't bother with them.

So the 20 grove ones are better?

The groved 3G disks are great - Ive run them with EBS green pads and now red ones. The red ones are great but need warming up. The groves make a bit of noise when pushed - but nothing to bad.

Did a track day with the red pads and suffered from "material transfer" which was eaisly sorted with a couple of big stops from around 100!

Hope that helps, the LE disks from fiat were a waste of time

What kinda use you do Gillo?

If you dont push or race/track much then i would say the 10groves are the ones to go for

Will rarely track to be honest, although if and when I do I want to minimise fade!! I assume the main advantage of 10 groove is less pad wear with the main disadvantage being less cooling than the 20 groove? Are there any other advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks

I think you could maybe get away with getting the 10's fitting them non aggressively with pagid blues then swapping round to aggressive with grey pads for track abuse maybe??

or save money and put 10 groove all round, backs cosmetic but finish it off

It's winter here and as I am not going to race the car or so (at least until the summer) I just bought OEM Fiat pads and I am going to replace them as soon as I have a chance.
Been sick in bed and could not do it yet.
I think the OEM are ok as long as you don't plan to race the car or only short "jumps"

The std rear brake discs on the coop 20vt really looks wimpy. I'm thinking of changing the brake discs on my coop with grooved TarOx. Should I also change the rear discs as well or will this affect the handling of the fiat during barking?
drjeeva.
